A-Weigh We Go: A Cake Poll and Kitchen Scale Giveaway!

Bad Idea: Obsessively weighing yourself. It leads to non-enjoyment of cake, plus you're perfect the way you are (awww).

Good Idea: Obsessively weighing your ingredients when measuring them out for baking. Why? Weighing ingredients is common practice for professional bakers, allowing precision and control over the final outcome of your sweets, so that you'll have reliable results. Don't believe it? Check it out this entry on Brown Eyed Baker, where she experimented to see some of the real differences.

And happily, the supercool Eat Smart Products has kindly offered up one of their Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scales for giveaway! Not only does it have handy functions like a tare feature which allows you to remove the weight of the container your ingredients are in, but it can measure ounces, pounds, grams and kgs -- perfect for if you're trying a recipe from one of those metric system-usin' countries.

How do you enter? It's easy! Simply weigh in (get it?) on the important question below, leaving your response in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: pie or cake? Why?

Good luck!

The fine print: This giveaway is open to US entrants only, please. Winner will be able to choose their favorite color scale: they're available in red, white, silver, black chrome, and white chrome. The giveaway will be up until 12 p.m. PST on Sunday, January 31st; the winner will be announced shortly thereafter. Please include your contact information (email) in the comment form so that I know where to find you if you win!

UPDATE: THE WINNER! Congratulations to Laura from New Haven, CT who is definitely on Team Cake! Her prize has been sent out!

Thanks to everyone for participating in the cake poll!

Honestly, I really like pie. The pleasure of eating fruit, even if it's covered with sugar, feels a little better to me than just sugar and butter - and the challenge of getting really good, flaky crust is something I enjoy. Cake is still delicious though! Red velvet ftw!

Definetly cake! I love the different things you can do with it...dress it up or dress it down. And the frosting is a plus.

Cake. Always and forever cake. I love fruit, but I vastly prefer it uncooked rather than baked and so most pies just aren't all that tasty to me. Unless they're French Silk. But, even then, I'd still generally pick cake over pie.

I love cake and would choose it any day!!!!

Definitely cake. I don't particularly care for fruit pies, just as a matter of taste, and they seem to be in the majority. Also, cakes have less margin for error -- just think of how many ways there are to mess up a pie crust!

Ooh!! hands down. What can I say cake is my happy spot!

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterSandi

Oooh that's tough...I'm going to have to go with cake!

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterSara

PIE for me please. The variety, the intense flavors of the fillings, the slightly salty crunch of a crisp crust still warm from the oven.

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterNancy White

Cake for sure since the definition covers a broader range options. "cakes" really covers a lot but to me Pie means crust and what goes inside.

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterNiko

Cake! I love cake + frosting; pie usually doesn't have frosting, unless it's your cookiecakepie which I made and love!

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa

I really can't decide on either one, so I would have to say pie and cake are my favorites. Cakes are moist and delicious with buttercream and pies well you can have apple pies mmmmm...... so good.

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterErica Gallardo

CAKE!! Buttercream is my favorite sweet of all time, so I have to go with cake...unless there is a good pie that could be topped with buttercream.....

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

I prefer pie over cake because I'm picky about my frosting and it's too easy for someone to screw cake up. I do love me some cupcakes though!

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterTera

Cake because icing is awesome.

January 24 | Unregistered Commentersnicoll

I love both, but cake is my favorite. Mainly because cake has frosting, and I love frosting. A lot.

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterPenguinBot

I love cake. Pie is good too, but I make pretty awesome cake, which is probably why I like it better!! ;-)

January 25 | Unregistered CommenterAmber Barnum

My daughter makes some amazing cake, so I would have to say I like cake better.

January 25 | Unregistered CommenterSandra Wood

I love pie. :-)

January 25 | Unregistered CommenterErik Barnum

I love cake, probably for the frosting.

January 25 | Unregistered CommenterMark Riley

Cake has to be my answer. Mostly because Cupcakes are single person cake perfections, and I find tartlets to be very messy(which is sometimes even more fun) but not great when checking out the cute barista or counter boy. =p

January 25 | Unregistered CommenterVictoriaA

I'm guessing that I'm in the majority when I say that cake tops pie every time!

January 25 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

Cake!

January 25 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa Calvin

Cake wins hands down

January 25 | Unregistered CommenterLauren

I prefer cake....I don't make a good pie crust, but I am still practicing...but I do neet a scales.

January 25 | Unregistered CommenterPolly

Definitely cake. Cake is more likely to have chocolate or peanut butter (or BOTH!) in it than pie. And I hate using a rolling pin, so pie crust is annoying to make. :)
