A-Weigh We Go: A Cake Poll and Kitchen Scale Giveaway!

Bad Idea: Obsessively weighing yourself. It leads to non-enjoyment of cake, plus you're perfect the way you are (awww).

Good Idea: Obsessively weighing your ingredients when measuring them out for baking. Why? Weighing ingredients is common practice for professional bakers, allowing precision and control over the final outcome of your sweets, so that you'll have reliable results. Don't believe it? Check it out this entry on Brown Eyed Baker, where she experimented to see some of the real differences.

And happily, the supercool Eat Smart Products has kindly offered up one of their Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scales for giveaway! Not only does it have handy functions like a tare feature which allows you to remove the weight of the container your ingredients are in, but it can measure ounces, pounds, grams and kgs -- perfect for if you're trying a recipe from one of those metric system-usin' countries.

How do you enter? It's easy! Simply weigh in (get it?) on the important question below, leaving your response in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: pie or cake? Why?

Good luck!

The fine print: This giveaway is open to US entrants only, please. Winner will be able to choose their favorite color scale: they're available in red, white, silver, black chrome, and white chrome. The giveaway will be up until 12 p.m. PST on Sunday, January 31st; the winner will be announced shortly thereafter. Please include your contact information (email) in the comment form so that I know where to find you if you win!

UPDATE: THE WINNER! Congratulations to Laura from New Haven, CT who is definitely on Team Cake! Her prize has been sent out!

Thanks to everyone for participating in the cake poll!

I'd say cake...I like the consistency of cake over pie. But if hardpressed, I'd eat a pie! :)

Cake, of course! I'm not fond of fruit in desserts--I prefer them on their own--so most pies, unfortunately, hold little appeal for me.

Cake! Always cake!

i love cake! i always have, always will, probably from birthday party memories. However, i have to say that i have had a couple boyfriends whose preferences made it necessary for me to make a few pies, and i suppose i see their appeal... but i can't imagine turning down a soft, frosting-covered cupcake for a piece of pumpkin pie. that's just ludicrous to me

maybe i'll just say that the CookieCakePie is my favorite and leave it at that :)

My vote is a solid one for cake. This is because I find fruit based pies slimy, and mostly because I have a longstanding love affair with delicious cake from a bakery by my parents' house. Every year, my mom gets a Sweetheart Bakery cake for my birthday and it's far and away the best dessert of my year.

It doesn't matter what the flavor is on the inside, but on the outside it the best, creamiest, sweetest, buttercream imaginable. When it is chilled, it tastes like a mixture of whipped cream and heaven.

Aww... poor pie, it seems as if it's been voted out and needs some lovin' and I'm just the girl to do it! Sorry Cake Babe, but this girl's got the hots for the bad boy of pastry,Mr. hunky, chunky, Pie. Fruit and crust? It's my guilty pleasure.

i love cake more. I find it more rich and satisfying. I also think you can add better toppings, i.e. frosting, which is my favorite part of cake. YUMMY!!

January 31 | Unregistered CommenterJoan

I have to choose! I love them both but I am going to have to choose pie surprisingly. I don't think I've ever had a bad piece of pie before and I have had plenty of bad dried out pieces of cake. And there really is nothing better than a slice of apple pie a la mode!

January 31 | Unregistered Commentererica

Pie! Filling is way tastier than icing, and all that buttery and flaky crust... YUM!!

January 31 | Unregistered CommenterBret

CAKE cause of the icing and other decorative options. Love bright colours I'm a kid at heart.

i would have to say cake, for sure! i've never really been a huge fan of pie - i think it's because i don't like the gooey texture of most pies' fruity fillings. i've also had much better baking cakes, and duh! cakes can be turned into CUPCAKES. :D i've been dying for a kitchen scale because i've been trying to do more baking! up this week - biscotti. yum. :)

I like PIE! the pastry really does it for me, and it's not as sweet as cake many times.

Pie has its place, but cake always hits the spot more.

January 31 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

Well, you'd think I'd say cake cause I'm JavaCupcake..... but to be honest, I love myself a good slice of berry pie... warmed and topped with vanilla bean ice cream. Ohhhh yum. To die for!! :)

Ohh.. This is a tough question... While I dearly love a good slice of pie, I much prefer cake for eating! So many flavor/frosting combos to choose from!

January 31 | Unregistered CommenterStormie

cake, of course :)

January 31 | Unregistered CommenterNikki Jean

I like cake, baked in a pie :)

January 31 | Unregistered CommenterLee

Cake of course, i love everything about it, from the lickable frosting to the spongy cake. Gotta be a layer cake so I can have more frosting

January 31 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle Solis

Cake. Why? One word - FROSTING.

I've never been a pie fan so it's cake all the way! The only way I like pie is with a graham cracker crust, but I'd still choose cake.

January 31 | Unregistered CommenterKristine T

Oh my! Decisions decisions! There are days when a warm, tangy fruit pie is what my mouth craves. And other times a big slice of chocolate cake with rich ganache frosting is all I want. So for me... BOTH!

January 31 | Unregistered CommenterMolly

Hmm, that's a tough one, but I have to go with cake. I just love the texture combo of cake and frosting. Although pie is pretty darn tasty. Can I just go with your cookie cake pie and have them all at once???

January 31 | Unregistered CommenterJanelle

Such a hard choice! I love me so strawberry rhubarb or berry pie (not a fan of the sweet stuff), but cake just flies off the counter when I make it for my roommates. Specifically cupcakes, but the layer kind as well. Pie seems like something you have after dinner, whereas I could eat cake anytime of the day!

January 31 | Unregistered CommenterCiara

Pie! I love, love, love decorating cake, but maybe it's because I'm around it so much that I prefer a good old slice of yummy pie!
