A-Weigh We Go: A Cake Poll and Kitchen Scale Giveaway!
Bad Idea: Obsessively weighing yourself. It leads to non-enjoyment of cake, plus you're perfect the way you are (awww).
Good Idea: Obsessively weighing your ingredients when measuring them out for baking. Why? Weighing ingredients is common practice for professional bakers, allowing precision and control over the final outcome of your sweets, so that you'll have reliable results. Don't believe it? Check it out this entry on Brown Eyed Baker, where she experimented to see some of the real differences.
And happily, the supercool Eat Smart Products has kindly offered up one of their Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scales for giveaway! Not only does it have handy functions like a tare feature which allows you to remove the weight of the container your ingredients are in, but it can measure ounces, pounds, grams and kgs -- perfect for if you're trying a recipe from one of those metric system-usin' countries.
How do you enter? It's easy! Simply weigh in (get it?) on the important question below, leaving your response in the comments section below:
Which do you prefer: pie or cake? Why?
Good luck!
The fine print: This giveaway is open to US entrants only, please. Winner will be able to choose their favorite color scale: they're available in red, white, silver, black chrome, and white chrome. The giveaway will be up until 12 p.m. PST on Sunday, January 31st; the winner will be announced shortly thereafter. Please include your contact information (email) in the comment form so that I know where to find you if you win!
UPDATE: THE WINNER! Congratulations to Laura from New Haven, CT who is definitely on Team Cake! Her prize has been sent out!
Thanks to everyone for participating in the cake poll!

My favorite would have to be cake. There's just more cake in the world that I'd rather eat than pie. And I'm a much better cake maker than pie baker...
Cake----- it's chocolate and can be decorated with frosting and sprinkles!!!!
Cake is the new Pie! Pies are definitely a thing of the past, well except for the yearly Thanksgiving pie that I will be enjoying come November.. In the meantime, CAKES are where it's at! We celebrate birthdays with CAKE, weddings with CAKE, anniversaries, grand openings and other things of the sort with CAKE! Not pie!! Pie may have it's old-time traditions, but in the end cake wins with it's luscious frostings, tantalizing flavors, and scrumptious fillings! GO CAKE!
I'm not entering since I just gave one away myself, but wanted to thank you for including a link to my post on weighing ingredients! I wish all cookbooks would convert to weight measurements!
I have to say cake, because that's what I make that brings the most joy to others. BUT if I'm eating it, I do like a good pie.
And I'm so exciting about this scale; thanks!
I like cake. I like the texture better than pie. I do love a good pie, though!
OK to be honest cookies are my fave (portability & I can fool myself about the calorie count better) - But cake comes in a close 2nd - Messy Frosted Wedges of Birthday Cake gets my vote (I'm a very tactile person & don't mind bathing in gobbs of chocolate frosting) Pie comes in last. I love making pies but personally I prefer my fruit unadulterated.
I definitely prefer pie because you don't have to be exact in measurements, once the crust is complete. Toss in whatever sounds good, add a bit of sugar and butter, and good to go.
For me, it has to be cake. I'll eat all the pie in the world, but give me some cake with lots of frosting and I'm a happy girl.
Cake - it has now surpassed steak as my all-time favorite food! If I had to choose only one dessert I could eat for the rest of my life, it would be cake. Why, do you ask? Variety - frosted, glazed, or plain. Mini, standard, jumbo, crowntop. Every flavor under the sun. Dense and fudgy or light and airy. Custard filled like the misleadingly named Boston Cream Pie, a flavor for every season and every one! Too often have I had a pie with inedible dough that wasn't worth the calories to eat. Rarely, have I had a cake so terrible that I regretted the calories! kstorkko at hotmail dot com.
Who knew this would be such a hard question. As I type I'm still deciding...20 minute pause...pie!
Pie, Mainly for the buttery flaky crust
Gotta go with cake!
I love pie the best! Pie crust is a challenge, while cake comes in a box, so you gotta appreciate pie more. Nothing beats a pie made from scratch, hot out of the oven.
I LOVE cake. I didn't become a fan of pie until I was much older, but I've loved cake since I was a kid, even the Duncan Hines boxed kind! It's fluffy, inviting, and delicious. I adore cake!
CAKE CAKE CAKE! (hope I made it clear enough for you, haha)
I have to say cake. I just don't like the crust on pies. Now if you had cake with any form of pie filling or pie without the crust and some form of frosting then it's a win-win situation.
Thanks for the giveaway and fun.
Caaaaaaaaaaakkkkeeee! pie doesn't even come close!
Cake. Absolutely, unequivocally. Cake.
I would have to go with pie, I like the real fruit that is so often in it, and pumpkin pie its just amazing.
If i were forced to choose (which would have to be by gunpoint, otherwise, i refuse) i would have to pick cake. With cake, you can put fruit in it and it's still delicious. so it's like.. pie and cake together. whereas if you put cake inside a pie, it's just... cake with a pie crust. so i pick cake. it's prettier, tastier, and all around a more versatile piece of heaven.
Pie for making and cake for eating!
German Chocolate Cake can make any day better. It's a fact.
Pie all the way... I ♥ pie crust, lemon meringue pie is my absolute fave dessert ever.
Cake all the way! I'm a wedding cake designer... so yeah...cake. :)
I love pie! Topped with ice cream or whipped cream, the best thing ever. I love the contrast between the filling and the crust, too. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, pie is gooood.
