A-Weigh We Go: A Cake Poll and Kitchen Scale Giveaway!

Bad Idea: Obsessively weighing yourself. It leads to non-enjoyment of cake, plus you're perfect the way you are (awww).

Good Idea: Obsessively weighing your ingredients when measuring them out for baking. Why? Weighing ingredients is common practice for professional bakers, allowing precision and control over the final outcome of your sweets, so that you'll have reliable results. Don't believe it? Check it out this entry on Brown Eyed Baker, where she experimented to see some of the real differences.

And happily, the supercool Eat Smart Products has kindly offered up one of their Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scales for giveaway! Not only does it have handy functions like a tare feature which allows you to remove the weight of the container your ingredients are in, but it can measure ounces, pounds, grams and kgs -- perfect for if you're trying a recipe from one of those metric system-usin' countries.

How do you enter? It's easy! Simply weigh in (get it?) on the important question below, leaving your response in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: pie or cake? Why?

Good luck!

The fine print: This giveaway is open to US entrants only, please. Winner will be able to choose their favorite color scale: they're available in red, white, silver, black chrome, and white chrome. The giveaway will be up until 12 p.m. PST on Sunday, January 31st; the winner will be announced shortly thereafter. Please include your contact information (email) in the comment form so that I know where to find you if you win!

UPDATE: THE WINNER! Congratulations to Laura from New Haven, CT who is definitely on Team Cake! Her prize has been sent out!

Thanks to everyone for participating in the cake poll!

I'm sorry Cake, your light, angel like fluffiness was beaten in my heart by vulgar, fearless, fierce Pie. Hot pie right out of the oven is my favorite, especially when you whip brrr cold ice cream into the mix. The sensation is able to blow cake right out of the window!

totally a cake person and my fiance is a pie person, who knows what happened there. =)

Cake stimulates both the eyes and the taste buds, so it's gotta be cake.

three words: key lime pie.

the winner is pies of course!

Definitely partial to cake... though pie is the perfect excuse to eat a giant spoonful of whipped cream!

Cake - hands down. I was just never a big fan of pie... don't know why. Unless it's a Hostess cherry pie.

It has to be cake -100%. In all honesty, I've never been fond of pie anyway and the beauty of cake is that you can eat it at any time, any occasion. Breakfast, brunch, pudding, or my favourite...midnight snack! Pie on the other hand is just that little bit too heavy to rely on for dessert, and doesn't have that sweet, crumbly satisfaction that cake supplies so abundantly. So commiserations pie, but cake takes the trophy for me!

Hands down--cake!! Pie is lame in that far too few pies contain chocolate. I love your blog and have shared it with so many people. I devour it!! Your ideas have inspired many of mine...

Cake! It is just such a versatile dessert. Mini, small, medium, large and OH! MY Goodness! that's a cake!???? is why I just love cake.

January 24 | Unregistered Commenterrobyn

Ohh great giveaway! I like pie better than I like cake. I love how I can combine the awesome textures and flavors of the filling and crust in my mouth. I'm just more of a pie person anyway, I think.

I would definitely say cake! The sweeter the better and I've never been a fan of fruit pies :(

Sorry but it has to be cake. Cake reminds me of those "good" days of cancer, when my mother was feeling strong enough to bake with us. She'd get out the ingredients and we'd start laughing and singing while mixing the ingredients in. My mom would always make the frosting from scratch, so we got to spend a lot of extra time with her. While we were waiting for the cake to finish baking, my mom would give us each a spoon of frosting to "make sure it was just right". Then my older sister and I would sneak a lick of cake batter. Those cakes always seemed to be the best cakes on earth. No pie can beat the perfection of good day cake.

I love cake. But I don't know if it is cheating since my favorite kinds of cake have fruit or veggies in them directly or flavored (e.g. carmel apple cake; carrot cake).

CAKE! I love the icing and there are just so many combinations. Plus, cakes can be in so many shapes are decorated way prettier than pie

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterAlexis Eacret

Cake...I like to eat what I bake and I can't make a good pie crust to save my life.

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterWhitney

CAKE!

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

Pie, pie, pie. Specifically, apple pie with streusal topping. Not only is it soooo delicious, it conjures up cozy visions of fall, family, and apple picking.

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterTori

Cake, by far! I love versatile it is...and how the frosting brings the whole package together. I love decorating cakes, which you can't really do with pies. And how can you go wrong with a great chocolate cake? :)

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterClaire

I prefer cakes. Especially cupcakes. I am obsessed with cupcakes! I like pie once in awhile. However, I love cakes, almost any flavor! Yum! This makes my mouth water!

Cake...with LOTS of icing!!! jreese4peace {at} gmail {dot} com

Even though I eat cake more often, I like pie better because it has fruit, and every pie is a little bit different depending on the different fruit. Pie in the summer, when the fruit is in season and there's extra ice cream, is absolutely the best.

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterAlison

I love cake because of the possibilites with chocolate. Pie is great dont get me wrong, a fruity piece of pie for breakfast, yummm. But cake! oh divine work of the oven, can come in so many different sizes, cupcake, bundt, 9 inch round with many layers, and so on. Also so many themes wedding, birthday, graduation, just because you need some hiding in the pantry away from your children so as not to be a bad example CAKE! thanks. Oh and it is not piespy.

January 24 | Unregistered CommenterBriaan

cake! cake! cake! because they can be chocolate more than pies can. and the icing. yes.

January 24 | Unregistered Commentersioux

CAKE! Pie is great, but nothing beats a big honkin' slice of moist and fluffy cake with a thick sweet layer of homemade icing. You can't put buttercream on pie!
