A-Weigh We Go: A Cake Poll and Kitchen Scale Giveaway!

Bad Idea: Obsessively weighing yourself. It leads to non-enjoyment of cake, plus you're perfect the way you are (awww).

Good Idea: Obsessively weighing your ingredients when measuring them out for baking. Why? Weighing ingredients is common practice for professional bakers, allowing precision and control over the final outcome of your sweets, so that you'll have reliable results. Don't believe it? Check it out this entry on Brown Eyed Baker, where she experimented to see some of the real differences.

And happily, the supercool Eat Smart Products has kindly offered up one of their Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scales for giveaway! Not only does it have handy functions like a tare feature which allows you to remove the weight of the container your ingredients are in, but it can measure ounces, pounds, grams and kgs -- perfect for if you're trying a recipe from one of those metric system-usin' countries.

How do you enter? It's easy! Simply weigh in (get it?) on the important question below, leaving your response in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: pie or cake? Why?

Good luck!

The fine print: This giveaway is open to US entrants only, please. Winner will be able to choose their favorite color scale: they're available in red, white, silver, black chrome, and white chrome. The giveaway will be up until 12 p.m. PST on Sunday, January 31st; the winner will be announced shortly thereafter. Please include your contact information (email) in the comment form so that I know where to find you if you win!

UPDATE: THE WINNER! Congratulations to Laura from New Haven, CT who is definitely on Team Cake! Her prize has been sent out!

Thanks to everyone for participating in the cake poll!

Cake - nothing beats cake and ice cream!

Pie.. simply b/c there are so many varieties! You can have a warm pie, a cold pie, pies with cream, pies with fruit... oh the list goes on and on! I just love them all to death.

Pie, because it's flaky and fruity.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterBrit

Always... always... ALWAYS Pie! I think it's a texture thing. The flakiness of the crust. The pop of the fruit or the crunch of the nuts, or coconut... whatever. Just leave off the Meringue and the whipped cream. My favorite pie? Sour Cream and Raisin (with the raisins pre-plumped so they pop each time you take a bite.) Ummmmmmmmm, I think I'm gonna bake a pie right now.

Cake all the way. By itself, with frosting, covered in fondant or ganache, and especially with milk.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterCara

There is nothing better than a moist, flovourful piece of cake complimented by rich, sweet, gooey frosting in just the right proportion. Vanilla... Chocolate... Lemon... the possibilites are endless!! Pie is just.........pie.

This is my third pregnancy, and all I crave is CAKE. I LOVE cake.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterLoretta

Definitely cake, but mostly because it is a frosting delivery system :)

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterSeattleRach

Cake- love a moist chocolate slice! Not a fan of pie crust.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterChrista H.

Cake. Really, really DELICIOUS cake. Any cake that is made well and with quality ingredients. Cake. :)

Pie... I love the crust... the crust with a hint of the flavor of the actual pie center.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterMeg

Cake, for the simple reason that I never ate pie as a child.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterBetty

Cake because icing is half the fun!

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterTeri

CAKE! I love all things cake.....I even own my own cake business. Oh how I love me some cake!

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterVanessa

I love them both but since I have to choose, I choose cake. If pie had frosting, I would choose pie. I love frosting.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

Cake, cake, cake! Pie is too sweet for me most of the time; unless it's apple and topped with ice cream, of course.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterSatpreet

I'm all about the Pie! Mostly because I'm still and will always be trying to replicate my Gram's absolutely perfect crust, golden, flaky and incrusted in sugar jewels.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterBrodie

oooh! I would love a scale! I have been using my postage scale and it's not good to mix my butter with my business.
I love cake. I don't really understand pie lovers. Maybe I've never had a a really good slice of pie?
I'd rather just eat fruit as is - not baked. Or as a thin filling between cake layers. Although chocolate dipped key lime pie on stick is amazing...
I guess I can't decide - does that disqualify me?

I am Team Cake. Please don't hate me, but I don't like cooked fruit. There are relatively few cakes that are ruined by the addition of fruit. But for most pies, fruit is the whole point. Thus, cake is where it's at.

I forgot to add my e-mail in my previous post. Sorry 'bout that. Thanks for the giveaway!

January 23 | Unregistered Commentertrishket

Cake and frosting! It is the best.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterSydney85

I like them both, but I prefer cake. With a pie, a lot of the time, what you put in it is what you get out of it, but with cakes, something magical can happen in the oven.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterMax Kraushaar

i prefer to eat pie, but i LOVELOVELOVE making cake! just preparing a cake seems so special and exciting :P

January 23 | Unregistered Commentersophie

CAKE! always superior, crust is just so yucky to me. Cake is so versatile and delicious. I love the dichotomy of the soft moist cake with the divine frosting on top.

Plus without cake we wouldn't have cupcakes; and without cupcakes we wouldn't have Cuppie. My sister has commissioned two paintings personalized for me and they are my most prized possessions. (I have the Tiffany's Cuppie and Cuppie in her new truck)

CAKE! I LOOOOOVE me a good chocolate cake! Oooo and red velvet too! I could go on and on!
