A-Weigh We Go: A Cake Poll and Kitchen Scale Giveaway!

Bad Idea: Obsessively weighing yourself. It leads to non-enjoyment of cake, plus you're perfect the way you are (awww).

Good Idea: Obsessively weighing your ingredients when measuring them out for baking. Why? Weighing ingredients is common practice for professional bakers, allowing precision and control over the final outcome of your sweets, so that you'll have reliable results. Don't believe it? Check it out this entry on Brown Eyed Baker, where she experimented to see some of the real differences.

And happily, the supercool Eat Smart Products has kindly offered up one of their Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scales for giveaway! Not only does it have handy functions like a tare feature which allows you to remove the weight of the container your ingredients are in, but it can measure ounces, pounds, grams and kgs -- perfect for if you're trying a recipe from one of those metric system-usin' countries.

How do you enter? It's easy! Simply weigh in (get it?) on the important question below, leaving your response in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: pie or cake? Why?

Good luck!

The fine print: This giveaway is open to US entrants only, please. Winner will be able to choose their favorite color scale: they're available in red, white, silver, black chrome, and white chrome. The giveaway will be up until 12 p.m. PST on Sunday, January 31st; the winner will be announced shortly thereafter. Please include your contact information (email) in the comment form so that I know where to find you if you win!

UPDATE: THE WINNER! Congratulations to Laura from New Haven, CT who is definitely on Team Cake! Her prize has been sent out!

Thanks to everyone for participating in the cake poll!

I've always preferred pie, both to devour & to bake. (Can't really figure out why.)

Pie or cake - pie if I don't have to make a crust like the cottage cheese pie I make but cake because it's easier to cut in pieces and freeze. Cake!

January 23 | Unregistered Commentersillygirl

I prefer cake, mainly because it's easier to make (well, for me anyway). And, while pie is limited to its one layer of goodness, with cake you can have several layers of goodness and those are separated by creamy, tasty, smooth layers of goodness beyond words. I have more creativity with cakes combining different ingredients or I can make a simple gateau au chocolate and be equally satisfied.

99% of the time, I'd have to say cake. There's something about the texture, the the combination of ingredients that tops most normal pies that always seem to separate into okay crust and okay filling. My neighbor, however, makes the most amazing pie. I'd take that pie over cake any day.

Cake of course, not only can you dress it up in any costume you want, but who wants a birthday pie or a wedding pie? It's the food of joy and celebration!... And let's not forget, it's what cuppie is made of!

i am kinda on the fence on this one, they are like my children I love them soo! but I guess if forced, i would answer cake, and wink slyly at pie behind cakes back.

January 23 | Unregistered Commentermechelle

absolutely cake--especially chocolate!

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterJen

Pie, actually. Cake can't approach the perfection of a really good crust, not to mention the wonder of the fillings possible!

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterJessie

I have to go with cake. I mean, pie is pretty awesome, but come on, cake has frosting! And frosting is awesome! Where else is it socially acceptable to eat a concoction of butter and sugar - and nothing else? And of course the actual "cake" bit is great too, :)

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterLindsey

Hmmm. Hard to say. Eating or baking? I prefer baking cakes since the variations are endless, but there's not much I love eating more than a perfect pie crust.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

Pie; I love its moistness, and the fruit allows me to fool myself into thinking it's healthy!

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterAna

Cake, hands down! :)

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterMelina

cake definitely!! i've never really liked pie, and cake is more versatile.

January 23 | Unregistered Commenterpaula

Oh, definitely cake! Pie can be delicious, but cake will always have a special place in my heart.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterHeather in Ohio

oh cake for sure. there is just something about the frosted goodness that hides the yummy cake within!

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterLaurel G

I cannot tell a llie, my answer is not pie.
Though I love it a lot, what I have got
is a deep love for cake, that I cannot shake.
Frosted or plain, it drives me insane.
If I have it in the house, I hide it from my spouse.
That's the life I lead, and CAKE is what I need!

Cake cake and more cake - homemade chocolate cake with homemade chocolate icing. for example the recipe on the back of hershey@s cocoa - ummmm to die for.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterSusan

CAKE! b/c of the icing...

CAKE! b/c of the icing

January 23 | Unregistered Commenterbless

Pie, most definitely. I LOVE the pastry. You have so many options-fruit, cream, chocolate, ice cream.....YUM!

January 23 | Unregistered Commenterpatti

Cake rules because of one simple thing. Frosting.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

That's a tough one. I prefer to eat pie. I love the flaky crust, and filling is the best! (My favorite is key lime, but I've never met a pie I didn't like.) On the flip side, I prefer to bake cake - mostly because I'm better at it. My mom can roll the prettiest pie crust you ever did see, and mine are tragic.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterCarrey

A moist, rich cake with a delightful filling and a thick layer of frosting makes any day great! Cakes are so diverse and go well with everything- a fancy dinner, a laid back meal, a glass of milk, a bottle of wine...and the frosting always makes it better. One day I fully intend to make a cake completely out of frosting!

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer

while i love pie, cake has frosting. it must be cake.

January 23 | Unregistered CommenterLauren

Oh man, I'd have to say cake. There are just so many varieties... everything from a rich chocolate ganache cake to 7up cake to cupcakes. Plus, they're fun to decorate!
