A-Weigh We Go: A Cake Poll and Kitchen Scale Giveaway!

Bad Idea: Obsessively weighing yourself. It leads to non-enjoyment of cake, plus you're perfect the way you are (awww).

Good Idea: Obsessively weighing your ingredients when measuring them out for baking. Why? Weighing ingredients is common practice for professional bakers, allowing precision and control over the final outcome of your sweets, so that you'll have reliable results. Don't believe it? Check it out this entry on Brown Eyed Baker, where she experimented to see some of the real differences.

And happily, the supercool Eat Smart Products has kindly offered up one of their Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scales for giveaway! Not only does it have handy functions like a tare feature which allows you to remove the weight of the container your ingredients are in, but it can measure ounces, pounds, grams and kgs -- perfect for if you're trying a recipe from one of those metric system-usin' countries.

How do you enter? It's easy! Simply weigh in (get it?) on the important question below, leaving your response in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: pie or cake? Why?

Good luck!

The fine print: This giveaway is open to US entrants only, please. Winner will be able to choose their favorite color scale: they're available in red, white, silver, black chrome, and white chrome. The giveaway will be up until 12 p.m. PST on Sunday, January 31st; the winner will be announced shortly thereafter. Please include your contact information (email) in the comment form so that I know where to find you if you win!

UPDATE: THE WINNER! Congratulations to Laura from New Haven, CT who is definitely on Team Cake! Her prize has been sent out!

Thanks to everyone for participating in the cake poll!

CAKE! More surface area for icing and permits more creativity in terms of decorations!

Cake, of course! There are just so many ways you can make it delicious - fillings, frostings, fruit, chocolate, etc!

I just started pastry school and would literally squeal with joy to win a scale! Yay

Mmmmm.....cake! I am a total frosting whore. I like it best when there's a fairly equal ratio of cake to frosting. This is why cupcakes are so delightful! I love pies too, but in moments of choice, I would definitely go for a good cake.

Pie! So easy to make and so many variations. Not that cake isn't wonderful too. If I could I'd choose both...

My nickname isn't kimmycake for nothin. When I was a little kid my favorite book was a cook book about cakes... Favorite toy was my fisher price cake set... not a pie cook book or a pie toy I've been a cake girl since day one. I LOVE CAKE!

Cake! It's delicious and moist and just plain yummy. There are so many types, so many flavors, so many ways to decorate. There are big cakes and little cakes and cupcakes. I even love pancakes, but I'm not sure if that counts for this.

Pie is alright, I guess, just not for me.

I'll take cake any day.

I love them both but I think I love cake a little bit more. 1) I tend to have better luck baking cakes then pies. 2) I have gotten burnt less baking cakes then pies. lol

I love CAKE!!!

Pie- delicious crust with pudding-like interior... or a pizza pie.

Cake or pie... hm... A difficult question indeed. I'd prefer a cakepie myself. I can't bring myself to choose one. Cake is wonderful for those lazy days after a grueling work day. And pie is the best when you feel feisty for some tanginess.

So, my favorite, Cakepie of course. (when it's been invented)

Cake! Part of the problem with pie is that people have a tendency to stick fruit in it and while I love fruit I don't love it as a dessert.

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Ooh toughie.. I would have to say cake- but not just any cake; I hate boxed cake haha

Pie hands down. Pie is an amazing labor of love. It also has a lovely history in my mind starting with family recipes and ending with age old debates regarding butter and shortening. Also, strawberry-rhubarb pie is my favorite dessert ever.

Oh boy...that's like asking whether I prefer wine or margaritas! Do I really have to choose just one? It depends on the mood. I get a little caked-out sometimes and only pie will cure the ache. But I suppose if I had a gun pointed to my head, I'd say I prefer cake. The frosting factor!

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterAmy C.

I'll have cake anyday, anywhere :3

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterNiki

Pies. All the way. Most cakes are too...cakey or floury. I like coconut, pumpkin, blueberry, apple, sweet potato! And the crust! YUM.
The only cake I'd take is Carvel Ice cream cake over Pie, and that's not even REAL cake!

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterAmber

Cake for sure - love the frosting.

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterKris

Cake ... there are so many difference ways you can decorate and prepare it. Hmm do I want to make a 2 layer, 3 layer, 4 layer or even 12 layer cake? Or will I make them into cupcakes..Jumbo, Regular or Mini? Oh cake.. How I Love Thee..... Let me count the ways.

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterKimberly

Both! But if I was forced to choose - my mom's apple pie. With some home made ice cream

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterSara P

Cake for sure...it's moist, smothered in frosting and comes in tons of flavors. nuff said.

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Cake FTW!

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterJacqueline

OMG. You want me to choose? Ok, uhhhh pie. Mostly because I love all things cooked fruit related.

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterChristy

This was a little tough for me to decide. I like a good apple pie with a crumble topping but my inner child will always love a moist cake with the perfect frosting. MMm yum.

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

Cake, of course! My friend prefers pies simply because of its flaky, buttery crust but I'd much prefer fluffy, soft cakes any day! =)

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterJena

pie--pumpkin pie
