A-Weigh We Go: A Cake Poll and Kitchen Scale Giveaway!

Bad Idea: Obsessively weighing yourself. It leads to non-enjoyment of cake, plus you're perfect the way you are (awww).

Good Idea: Obsessively weighing your ingredients when measuring them out for baking. Why? Weighing ingredients is common practice for professional bakers, allowing precision and control over the final outcome of your sweets, so that you'll have reliable results. Don't believe it? Check it out this entry on Brown Eyed Baker, where she experimented to see some of the real differences.

And happily, the supercool Eat Smart Products has kindly offered up one of their Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scales for giveaway! Not only does it have handy functions like a tare feature which allows you to remove the weight of the container your ingredients are in, but it can measure ounces, pounds, grams and kgs -- perfect for if you're trying a recipe from one of those metric system-usin' countries.

How do you enter? It's easy! Simply weigh in (get it?) on the important question below, leaving your response in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: pie or cake? Why?

Good luck!

The fine print: This giveaway is open to US entrants only, please. Winner will be able to choose their favorite color scale: they're available in red, white, silver, black chrome, and white chrome. The giveaway will be up until 12 p.m. PST on Sunday, January 31st; the winner will be announced shortly thereafter. Please include your contact information (email) in the comment form so that I know where to find you if you win!

UPDATE: THE WINNER! Congratulations to Laura from New Haven, CT who is definitely on Team Cake! Her prize has been sent out!

Thanks to everyone for participating in the cake poll!

Cake of course! Though I still want to try your combination cookie/cake/pie someday!

Sorry pie, it's gotta be cake. There's a certain joy in making a cake, whether it's a super fancy frosted layer cake or a homey rustic good-enough-on-its-own cake. And cake is just so tender and fluffy and moist!

Of course, I like both but if I were on a desert island, I'd choose pie. The fruit makes it seem healthier and fresher.

I love cake. So many flavors and combinations. YUM! But pie crust is good too!

Cake. Cake is always good, Pie is good, but only on the right day, and right time... :)

Cake ANY DAY! You can do so much more with it, and I think it tastes richer and more luxurious. More like a special occasion!

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterTara

Cake is the obvious choice! There's something that's simply wonderful about a mouthful of moist crumbs and sweet whipped frosting :)

Cake Cake Cake Cake!!!!! to be honest, I like it cuz its prettier!

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterNicole

Hmmm, not to be different, but pie is so underrated. I really love a good slice of pie. The chance to take sweet delicious fruit and add more butter and sugar just makes it even better. And, I agree it does feel healthier :)

I love cake... pies so rarely have frosting!

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

I love them both, but cake wins because of the frosting!!!

Although I had pie last night, my favorite is still CAKE! LOVE CAKE!
P.S. If I win I will be giving my sister the scale I just bought haha

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterAli

I think I love cake more because of the frosting. Sorry, pie!

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterJen

CAKE! I like pie too but I'm more picky with pie than I am with cake.

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

I'm gonna have to go with cake because there are just so many flavors out there and so many different ways to decorate a cake. I love pie, but there is just something magical about a cake. =)

I think pies are beautiful, but when it comes to eating, I'm all about cake even though I like coconut creme pie and pumpkin pie. I think it all comes down to texture for me because I find most pie to be gooey and therefore unpleasant to eat. I don't like super-frosted cake or even small cakes with gooey insides. Beautiful cake that holds it own, even in relation to a cup of coffee or tea, is divine: pound cake, good Viennese-style cakes and slices....oh, yum.

Cake please! I love frosting on top of a moist, rich piece of cake...and maybe more frosting between layers of said cake!

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterJohnna

I love cake!
I like the versatility and variety of types and flavors of cake as compared to pie.
Not to mention that it's easier to make more! <3

"Let them eat cake" as some famous French princess said, and please let me eat cake! While I like pie at Thanksgiving, any other time of the year it is CAKE.

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterJane

pie, the only acceptable cake are cupcakes!
mmmmm banana cream pie........ droooool........

January 22 | Unregistered Commenterbnj

I prefer PIE! because it's usually hard to find a good slice of pie and when you do, it's pretty amazing. I also feel like cake is so common for desserts and celebrations, therefore having a good pie once in awhile is a special treat :)

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterDesiree

I try not to discriminate but I do love me some cake...especially my cake :) And I weigh ingredients when ever possible

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterCarrie

mmmmm.......... cake..................

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth Ferrell

Pie! I had too many bad cakes when I was a kid that prevent me from naming it favorite. Instead, it has to be second favorite.

January 22 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

i love cake...nuff said...
