A-Weigh We Go: A Cake Poll and Kitchen Scale Giveaway!

Bad Idea: Obsessively weighing yourself. It leads to non-enjoyment of cake, plus you're perfect the way you are (awww).

Good Idea: Obsessively weighing your ingredients when measuring them out for baking. Why? Weighing ingredients is common practice for professional bakers, allowing precision and control over the final outcome of your sweets, so that you'll have reliable results. Don't believe it? Check it out this entry on Brown Eyed Baker, where she experimented to see some of the real differences.

And happily, the supercool Eat Smart Products has kindly offered up one of their Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scales for giveaway! Not only does it have handy functions like a tare feature which allows you to remove the weight of the container your ingredients are in, but it can measure ounces, pounds, grams and kgs -- perfect for if you're trying a recipe from one of those metric system-usin' countries.

How do you enter? It's easy! Simply weigh in (get it?) on the important question below, leaving your response in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: pie or cake? Why?

Good luck!

The fine print: This giveaway is open to US entrants only, please. Winner will be able to choose their favorite color scale: they're available in red, white, silver, black chrome, and white chrome. The giveaway will be up until 12 p.m. PST on Sunday, January 31st; the winner will be announced shortly thereafter. Please include your contact information (email) in the comment form so that I know where to find you if you win!

UPDATE: THE WINNER! Congratulations to Laura from New Haven, CT who is definitely on Team Cake! Her prize has been sent out!

Thanks to everyone for participating in the cake poll!

Definitely pie. Delicate, buttery, flaky crust filled with whatever sweet, custardy or fruity innards you desire. A little fresh whipped whipped cream, and ta-da, heaven in a bite, especially if the pie is shaker lemon or banana cream, or no wait, strawberry rhubarb, or wait, blueberry...

As much as I love pie, I gotta go with cake. It's the frosting the won me over.
And plus, while there is quite a bit of variety with pies I feel like there is much more that can be done with cake. Not only with the different flavors and the multitude of combination between cake and icing but, also in the ways in which you can decorate it. Decorating a cake is half the fun!

I'd take cake over pie anytime. The icing is the whole reason why I love it so much.

I've never been a pie girl, BUT in this case I would choose pie - I've been in more "fruity" moods and those fresh fillings make me feel less guilty about indulging. And of course, I do thoroughly enjoy a good crust.

Now if the question was about cupcakes vs. pie, then pie would lose for sure ;)

the answer totally used to be cake... i never really liked pie... but in the last year i have discovered i like pie more and more.... my first reaction is to then say pie (also doesn't help i work in a place that has cake pretty much every day) but the more i think about it there are more types of cake that i like then pies... so final answer ...... ummmmm..... cake.... i think....

Sorry cake...But I'm going with pie. It makes me not feel so bad for eating more than one slice.

January 26 | Unregistered CommenterDiana

gotta say cake. i love pie and all but the soft bread and frosting on cakes are way too delicious! can i have a slice now..? please..?! (:

January 26 | Unregistered CommenterGrace

CAKE! Hands down. It's present at every special memorable event, there's always some type of yummy frosting and/or filling to devour, and you can decorate it any which way you'd like. Delicious! :)

it depends on who's making it of course! But I tend to fall in love with pies. Especially ones that have the words: chocolate, mousse, decadent, fudge, whipped!

yum

I love pie, but I have to say I love cake better. Only because there are endless cake/filling/frosting combinations to eat! :D

I make cakes, but I LOVE pie! :) And I SO need a new kitchen scale...hubby dropped mine and it no longer works...*eyeroll*

I will have to go with pie on this but mostly because I love fruity things over chocolately things... apple, pear, cherry, berries... really any sort of fruit pie I absolutely love!

cake all the way, because even bad cake is a way to get the frosting into my mouth

January 27 | Unregistered Commentergwenz

Please don't make me choose between the 2, it stresses me out and makes me eat more cake and pie : (

Cakecakecake. Cake is so fun to me! Frosting swirled on top, sprinkles, different flavors between the layers... mmmmmm.

Cake! cake + frosting = the best!!! :)

Wow, interesting read on use of scales vs cups.

January 27 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

Cake. More carbs, usually.

January 28 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Ng

Most definitely cake. Let's me honest, they're moist, delicious, and layered.

January 28 | Unregistered CommenterMrs. Ellsie

cake makes me feel like a child, while pie makes me feel like an adult. so if i have to choose one -- i say cake. we can all stand to be a little more child-like.

January 28 | Unregistered Commenterkatherine

I'd say cake...I like the consistency of cake over pie. But if hardpressed, I'd eat a pie! :)

January 28 | Unregistered CommenterJoanna

Cake. Especially molten chocolate cake, and carrot cake with a thick layer of cream cheese frosting! It just seems so much more decadent and indulgent than pie... And I can never resist a good frosting. But of course I enjoy the occasional chocolate pecan pie or a good banana creme. Question: Would you call cheesecake more of a cake or more like a pie?
