Cake Poll: How Do You Eat A Cupcake?

Win them!
Musing over methods of snack-eating is practically an American pastime. There have been ad campaigns centered on how people eat Reese's Peanut Butter Cups; there have been studies on the characteristics associated with various methods of Oreo-eating.

But now, it's time to attack the sweetest treat of all: the cupcake. Tell us how you eat yours in the comment section, and you'll be entered to win a completely awesome prize pack, which will include:

-------------------------------

How do you eat yours?
How do you eat yours?
Do you eat it with a knife and fork, pinkies out?
Do you tear it in half and discard the bottom so as to increase the frosting-to-cake ratio?
Do you invert it, sandwich-style, to keep your fingers free of frosting?
Do you eat yours with a spoon, served in a dish of milk?
...Or do you just dig in?
Can't wait to read your responses! A winner will be chosen at random shortly after the cake poll closes at noon (12 p.m. PST) on Friday, May 15.

I peel back the wrapper and start at a bottom "corner", working my way towards the opposite top "corner" to end with top and icing goodness.

strange or not... if i have a fork handy - i'll eat my cupcake with it. typically though.... first i'll taste test the frosting with my finger, then i'll unpeel half of it - bite. unpeel some more - bite.... etc.

Peel down the liner and dive in - face first!

I eat from the bottom up, saving the icing for the last couple of mouthfuls...mmm

Rip ALL the paper off. Eat the bottom first, saving the frosting top for last.

I peel the wrapper down and take a big, messy bite out of the side, getting both cake and frosting. After that, I have no method- it's a free for all. But I'd never thought of inverting the top to make it into a "sandwich" and will certainly try that with my next cupcake.

I peel the wrapper down and take BIG bites. Every bite has to have both frosting and cake, finishing both parts at the same time.

When I eat a cupcake, I HAVE to have both frosting & cake in the same bite. I guess it's my "rule" for cupcake eating :) The downside to this method is if the cake is too dry, the frosting doesn't really hide it - and if the frosting's not that good, the cake doesn't help make it taste better. But, hey - you can't have everything (or can you?)... :)

hmm.... well, i usually just see how much i can fit into my mouth on the first bite, then finish it up with a few smaller ones :) thanks for the giveaway!

First, and most important...if the frosting is bright blue and/or Crisco-like, I skip the cupcake altogether. (I teach 5th grade so I see a LOT of birthday treats!) I tend to take the bottom half off to eat first, then the top half with frosting. I am surprised to realize that I never throw the cupcake case away until I fold it in half and then a triangle! Creature of habit...

I taste the frosting first. If it's grainy or slick shortening then it's getting scraped off. Then I cut a wedge out using a knife and give the rest away because I can't eat an entire cupcake, especially since they're massively big these days.

hehe, this is such an interesting poll! i eat mine by tearing off the bottom first and eating it, because i like to save the best for last - THE FROSTING. :) and if there's a cherry on top, i eat it with the last bite.

I like to eat it with a spoon on a plate, going around the edges. Then, when it's just a center tower and too top-heavy to stand up on its own, I lay it down and eat the bottom. THEN I eat the last center bite with frosting. I am a firm believer in saving the best for last.

i break off the bottom half
and eat that first...
this allows me to appreciate the cake part on its own...
then, oh, the frosted half...bliss

You can't waste any cupcake so I take the top off but still eat the bottom.

May 13 | Unregistered CommenterMeghan

Bottom first...rip it off...eat the bottom, then enjoy the nice frosted top part...yum :)

May 13 | Unregistered CommenterHilary

It depends on the amount of icing on top. If it is minimal then I will take a big bite and enjoy both icing and cupcakiness. However, if there is an icing overload, then I will nibble it down to a managable size before taking a big bite.

First I peel the cupcake liner off and then I eat the bottom half of the cake part. This leaves the frosting and remaining cake more "bite-sized" which I then chomp chomp chomp in a horizontal style attack. Finally I lick my fingers. This is a strategy that has worked very well for me.

May 13 | Unregistered CommenterKaran

First, I assess the amount of frosting on the cupcake in question. If it's mounded up a lot in the center, I usually take a nip of frosting off the top to even things out and then attack, trying to get cake and frosting in each bite. Yummy...

May 13 | Unregistered CommenterKimberlina

I like to lick the frosting off first, but if it is a decadent cupcake, I make sure I take a bite with the right amount of frosting and cake (and filling if applicable!)

I DIG IN. Liner and all. NO MERCY.

May 13 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Nieto

Since the icing is my favorite part, I nibble away the bottom part, saving the delicious, frosting-covered top for last. Mmm.

May 13 | Unregistered CommenterElliott

I feel like I have a tiny mouth, so I open my mouth AS WIDE AS POSSIBLE before taking a bite, but I generally eat it altogether. I feel like I'm not enjoying it properly if I'm denying the icing and cake the ability to work together. xD
Plus, some cupcakes have bad icing, and you wouldn't want a mouthful of that!

May 13 | Unregistered CommenterKathryn

Ah, but do you ship to Canada? I'll play just in case you do...

I rip off the liner and then decapitate the cupcake. I'll eat the bottom first, and save the frosted top for last. Sometimes this results in a nearly deadly ratio of frosting to cake, but it's worth it.

May 13 | Unregistered CommenterEagranie

I take off the liner and fold it. Then I rip off the bottom of the cupcake and eat that first. Then I eat the crown and the frosting. Their had to be frosting. I never lick the frosting though. ew.
