Cake Poll: How Do You Eat A Cupcake?
Tuesday, May 12, 2009
Musing over methods of snack-eating is practically an American pastime. There have been ad campaigns centered on how people eat Reese's Peanut Butter Cups; there have been studies on the characteristics associated with various methods of Oreo-eating.
But now, it's time to attack the sweetest treat of all: the cupcake. Tell us how you eat yours in the comment section, and you'll be entered to win a completely awesome prize pack, which will include:
- an original framed piece of CakeSpy artwork: Cupcakes and Zombies!
- a set of Bella Cupcake Couture cupcake liners
- a box of CakeSpy notecards
- a brand-new (hot off the press!) mini notebook featuring Cupcakes at CBGB!
- a pack of cupcake lip balm
-------------------------------
How do you eat yours?
Do you eat it with a knife and fork, pinkies out?
Do you tear it in half and discard the bottom so as to increase the frosting-to-cake ratio?
Do you invert it, sandwich-style, to keep your fingers free of frosting?
Do you eat yours with a spoon, served in a dish of milk?
...Or do you just dig in?
Can't wait to read your responses! A winner will be chosen at random shortly after the cake poll closes at noon (12 p.m. PST) on Friday, May 15.

I try to make sure eat bite has the same frosting to cake ratio... sometimes I get frosting all over my face but I'm okay with that!
I like to unwrap my cupcake and take the first bite with as much of a blend of frosting and cake as possible. Then I like to alternate between eating the frosting-covered bites and the pure cake bites. I always try to leave a bite with both frosting and cake for the very end... unless the frosting is store-bought and not very good in which case I eat all the cake and none of the top.
i like to eat it hot out of the oven and smear just a little icing (so that its melts) and stuff it in my mouth. its that good! if it was a cold cupcake that someone gave me, i would peel the liner and eat the frosting with maybe an inch of cake fist and then the rest of the cake. or if i'm at starbucks, and sometimes they have cupcakes, i like to eat it with a fork. i am a total nut!
I like to think i wat my cupcake the "normal" way....peel the wrapper about 1/2 way, still leaveing some on the cupcake so you can get a good grip and not make too much of a mess...and take a bite!
I gently peel away the liner, and (on an ideal cupcake) lick the delicate rim of frosting from the paper before discarding it. Then I take a nibble of the cake, either from the very bottom or the (on a less-ideal cupcake) the unfrosted edge. The results of these tasting forays inform whether I subsequently a) in the furthest-from-optimal scenario, eat mostly the cake because the frosting just isn't worth it, b) in the slightly less-far-from-optimal scenario, eat only the frosting because the cake isn't worth it, or c) chomp into the cupcake with gleeful abandon, probably resulting in a frosting dab on the end of my nose, because the cake and frosting are delicious and compliment one another delightfully.
I will hold the cupcake firmly in one hand (so as not to loose the precious thing!), and lick the tip of the frosting "cone" down to a manageable size. I then place the trimmed cuppie on a plate, carefully peel down the wrapper, and use a fork to cut bite-sized pieces out, making sure to include a nice dollop of remaining frosting with each delectable bite.
Oh man. ....now I need to go bake some cupcakes....
Just dig in, trying to get a good cake to frosting ratio.
I save the frosted top half for last, savoring each bite slowly.
Unless it has been one of those days. Then I go straight for the bowl of icing itself...

After removing the cupcake liner I cut or rip the cupcake in half. Then I distribute the frosting pretty evenly on the cupcake part. I usually end up eating random sized pieces of cupcake with frosting smeared all over. And of course, my fingers are usually covered in frosting. Then I have cold milk/soy milk or ice water as my chaser.
Pretty boring here: tear off the liner completely and eat equal parts cake and frosting. ho hum
I carefully peel off the liner and do my best to eat the bottom first, thereby saving the frosting for last. Needless to say, I am a very messy cupcake eater!
I like to unwrap it, eat the plain bottom first and then eat the cupcake top with frosting!
I like to peel off the wrapper and cut it vertically in half, then eat each half individually. Even better, cut it in quarters and usually each quarter fits in your mouth perfectly! Maximum taste, less frosting waste!
I always tear the bottom off and stack it on top of the icing like some type of super cookie and from there just stuff it in my mouth...2 to 3 bites tops.
I've been known to take the top off the cupcake and set it aside (seriously, frosting is the best part of a cupcake). I'll eat the bottom half and then savor the top with frosting.
I eat them on a plate with a fork. Boring I know, but yet still so yummy.
I unpeel a little bit of the wrapper, then bite off the top bit and get mostly frosting. I usually eat all the frosting off this way and see what cake I have left. Mmm, frosting.
i eat cupcakes with a fork to avoid getting any frosting on my nose! yum yum yum!!! :D
Pull back the liner, open wide, and I'm going in. A little frosting on the nose never hurt anyone. Besides, I have a tiny Yorkie baby to help with any mishaps! Good times...
I peel the wrapper off as I go. I eat it all intact till there's 1-2 bites left and then I rip off the bottom and place the bottom on the top at eat those last few bites as a cupcake sandwich. Very complex, huh?
I'd like to say that I take it slowly and savor every bite, but I get too excited and end up cramming the entire cupcake in my mouth!
I work my way up from the bottom leaving the frosting for last. YUM!

I take a few cake and frosting bites first, then eat most of the bottom. I'll take a few bites with lots of frosting and very little cake, then I proceed to smear the frosting onto the wrapper, finish the cake part, and then savor the frosting (as long as it's good.)
I usually try to get the first bite to be my perfect bite- an awkward mouthful from the side to get the exact ratio of frosting and cake without getting it all over my nose. After that I give up and tear the top off, turn it upside down and go at it with a fork. This will make sure every bite is a frosting and cake-filled winner. Yum!
I make a sandwich. My family hates when I do it but it's the perfect way to enjoy a cupcake. The frosting to cake ration is equal and there's virtually no mess.
