Cake Poll: How Do You Eat A Cupcake?
Tuesday, May 12, 2009
Musing over methods of snack-eating is practically an American pastime. There have been ad campaigns centered on how people eat Reese's Peanut Butter Cups; there have been studies on the characteristics associated with various methods of Oreo-eating.
But now, it's time to attack the sweetest treat of all: the cupcake. Tell us how you eat yours in the comment section, and you'll be entered to win a completely awesome prize pack, which will include:
- an original framed piece of CakeSpy artwork: Cupcakes and Zombies!
- a set of Bella Cupcake Couture cupcake liners
- a box of CakeSpy notecards
- a brand-new (hot off the press!) mini notebook featuring Cupcakes at CBGB!
- a pack of cupcake lip balm
-------------------------------
How do you eat yours?
Do you eat it with a knife and fork, pinkies out?
Do you tear it in half and discard the bottom so as to increase the frosting-to-cake ratio?
Do you invert it, sandwich-style, to keep your fingers free of frosting?
Do you eat yours with a spoon, served in a dish of milk?
...Or do you just dig in?
Can't wait to read your responses! A winner will be chosen at random shortly after the cake poll closes at noon (12 p.m. PST) on Friday, May 15.

I eat the bottom part first and then eat the frosted top! YUM!
I'll probably be embarrassed by this, but...
I pull off a part of the wrapper and eat the top edge only, getting in some icing and cake. Then I pull off half the wrapper and eat the icing-less cake half that the first bit exposed. Then I usually pull off the rest of the wrapper and eat the other icing-less cake bottom. Then I finish by eating the "cupcake top" half with the icing.
And occasionally I shamefacedly lick the icing off the wrapper. I am an icingholic.
I usta eat the bottom half off and then at the top half of the cake and the frosting, until my dad told me a little trick he learned while working at the elementary school -- the cupcake sandwich -- yep that would be the "I'm dizzy" drawing you did...!
Totally depends on the size of the cupcake. Typically I just bite right into it. If it's jumbo though, or if I have to unhinge my jaw to take in the frosting, I go for the fork action.
I guess I'm among the majority here who carefully remove the liner and chomp from top to bottom to get equal amounts of cake and icing in every bit. I usually stuff the last bit all the way in, and suck any last crumbs off of my finger on the way out. Then wonder if it would be piggy to have another one...
Throw away the paper and eat equal parts cake and frosting. UNLESS there is vanilla ice cream around. Then I mutilate said cupcake into a bowl with a little ice cream. Just enough to make it cold and creamy. Yums!
I sometimes invert it to keep my fingers clean, and other times I just dig right in! Thanks for the giveaway!
Icing in the middle!
Tear off the wrapper, then dig in. No forks, no dissection -- just start on one side, and eat my way to the other. Yum!
I peel the liner downwards halfway and then proceed to eating the cupcake til it's gone! ( :

I peel down half of the liner and gently tear the cupcake in half (down the middle vertically). Then I eat the half not in the liner, starting at the bottom. Then I peel off the rest of the liner and eat that last half, starting at the bottom.
But if the cupcake has a ton of frosting on it, I peel down half of the liner and pull off chunks of the cake from the bottom and dip/scoop it into the frosting. I do this until the bottom is finished, making sure not to scoop off all the frosting, so I can enjoy a perfect thinly frosted cupcake top in the end.
When I meet a cupcake the gloves come off! I might lick off the frosting or just take a huge bite like a child would. Reckless abandon rules my cupcake eating habits!
I peel off the liner, and dig in with a spoon! If there is frosting on the cupcake, the frosting-cupcake combination is perfect!

I like to tear off half of the paper and rip off one cakey bit to savor first, then tear off bits to try and get an equal cake/icing ratio...mmmm
I peel the wrapper off and then just take a huge bite. I usually finish a cupcake in three bites. =)
For me, it all depends on the size of the cupcake. If it's a jumbo cupcake, I use a fork. If it's a standard cupcake, it take big 'ol bites, and if it's a mini....I pop that little sucker in my mouth all at once. Wow, I never really thought of my methods of cupcake eating before!!
I just dig in. Love it when the frosting is so high you get it up your nose with the first bite!
I just peel part of the liner down and open wide, insert cupcake, repeat until gone.
Like many, I eat the bottom, cake-only part first, then dive into the frosting top. I LOVE frosting!
After a first exploratory bite, I always save the frosted top for last, eating it from the bottom up.
Yum!

I tear off the bottom and smoosh it onto the top of the frosting, creating a cupcake sandwich. delicious.
OK, I have to say that I approach a cupcake w/excitement mixed with sadness. The sadness comes from knowing that the cupcake will be gone soon. The excitement comes from, well, you know, the cupcake.
I take off the liner. I cut the cupcake in half, and then I try to make sure each bite has some frosting. The frosting is key. Sometimes, I add more frosting to the middle.
If I don't have a knife to cut the cupcake, I try to take huge bites, starting with the top, and try to get some frosting in each bite. Messy, but satisfying.
The first bite has to be a big one and contain both frosting and cake.I savor everything about it and decide in that moment if I'm going to share or not. Usually it gets devoured by my little ones after that.
Depending on where I'm eating it, my method of eating would differ. Like, if I'm eating it at a restaurant, I peel the paper off half the cupcake till I can find enough room to use my fork and then dig in little by little. But if I were eating it at home, I'd simply bite right into it after removing the paper liner!
