Cake Poll: How Do You Eat A Cupcake?
Tuesday, May 12, 2009
Musing over methods of snack-eating is practically an American pastime. There have been ad campaigns centered on how people eat Reese's Peanut Butter Cups; there have been studies on the characteristics associated with various methods of Oreo-eating.
But now, it's time to attack the sweetest treat of all: the cupcake. Tell us how you eat yours in the comment section, and you'll be entered to win a completely awesome prize pack, which will include:
- an original framed piece of CakeSpy artwork: Cupcakes and Zombies!
- a set of Bella Cupcake Couture cupcake liners
- a box of CakeSpy notecards
- a brand-new (hot off the press!) mini notebook featuring Cupcakes at CBGB!
- a pack of cupcake lip balm
-------------------------------
How do you eat yours?
Do you eat it with a knife and fork, pinkies out?
Do you tear it in half and discard the bottom so as to increase the frosting-to-cake ratio?
Do you invert it, sandwich-style, to keep your fingers free of frosting?
Do you eat yours with a spoon, served in a dish of milk?
...Or do you just dig in?
Can't wait to read your responses! A winner will be chosen at random shortly after the cake poll closes at noon (12 p.m. PST) on Friday, May 15.

I like to eat cup cakes with my fingers! The more frosting the better. I just like to tear off small peices at a time and make it last...
If it's a new cupcake bakery that I haven't been to we will buy a bunch and then share them so that we can get a taste of all of them...if it's a bakery I have been to - then I usually just devour it in a few bites!
I just dig in! No cutlery, cupcakes were meant to be eaten in the hands!

I always remove the liner very slowly and tear away the bits of cake one small chunk at a time, chewing each section very thoroughly. I then get to the rounded top and lick away some of the mounded frosting, savoring each taste very gradually. I gently nibble at spinkles between my teeth and let the icing dissolve in my gob. I basically take as much time as concievable with the process of consuming a cupcake- I'm a recovering anorexic that struggled for ten years to keep my favorite sweet at arm's length. I've taught myself to enjoy every second that I have food in my mouth, especially sweets. I can appreciate cupcakes so much more now that I allow myself to have them again, and I bake them with some frequency... I have a sordid love affair/fascination with them.
I usually just take a big bite and try to get as equal a ratio of frosting to cake as possible. I always make sure to get every last bit off the wrapper and my fingers after.
I do like the inverted sandwich method, however. But often when eating cupcakes, a knife with which to cut the cake is not available. Thus, the big bite method!
I scrape off half the icing so that only a thin layer sits on top and each bite gets mostly cake, and a bit of icing!
I remove the liner then nibble off the overhanging top. Then the rest of the cupcake gets wolfed down in 3 huge bites.
I usually try to get cake and frosting in the same bite. Unless the frosting is cream cheese which is my favorite. Then I pull the bottom off and eat that first, followed by the cupcake top and the nummy frosting.
I do the inverted sammich method. You get the best cake-to-frosting ratio that way. And the frosting doesn't get in your nose that way.
I just dig in! Though when I was a kid, I would lick the frosting off the top then eat the cupcake.
I eat the bottom half first, enjoying the cake. Then I eat the top half, which is where the awesomeness is...Frosting :)
This is a good question! I wonder what our cupcake-eating styles say about our personalities. What I like to do is first try a bite of the cake by itself, then try some frosting by itself, then eat the rest of it together (which is always better than just frosting or just cake). That way, I can tell of the cake is lacking in a certain area. Sometimes I also like to eat a little frosting off the top with my finger, because it's annoying when there's three inches of cloying frosting. I always take really small bites, too, to make it last longer!
mmm... cupcakes... i peel half the wrapper off and take bites, trying to get equal bites, so no bite has more cake/icing than any other. yummy!
Tear off the bottom and eat separately to make for a increased frosting to cake ratio for the top.
Tear off the wrapper, tear off the bottom and smush it on top. Then add more icing on top if i can get a hold of the leftovers =).
I am an inverter! And proud of it.
peel off the wrapper, lick off all the frosting, and chow down on the cake. yum...
Another sandwich girl here. After one too many unfortunate frosting-up-the-nose incidents, I discovered the sandwich method and have been a loyal devotee ever since.
Mmmm... frosting sandwich...
My favorite way to eat a cupcake is on the front porch, with the sun shining on my knees, barefeet dangling over the steps, and the kids quietly (albeit momentarily) munching away on the goodness that is a cupcake!!
Take off the wrapper, and go for it! Making sure, of course, that all bites have equal amounts of frosting and cake :)
Well... it all depends on the quality of the icing. If if is the yucky cheap kind then I will lick the icing off first and then eat the cake. But if its delicious icing then I eat the bottom half of the cake first and then eat the top half with the icing. Trust me it is a great method!
No need to hesitate...I take the wrapper off and consume. If I'm alone I could eat a cupcake in 2 bites. If I'm in the presents of people I take 4 bites to preserve my self-image.
First I locate a napkin, because it gets messy. I peel the paper liner off and spread it out like a plate. I break off the bottom of the cupcake and tear it into pieces. Then I spread some of the frosting on the pieces of cake. Last I eat the top of the cupcake with the remaining frosting.
When I'm in public, I gingerly peel the wrapper and bite it making sure the frosting to cake ratio is good, alone however, I cookie monster the poor thing...
I like to make sure each bite has a good amount of both frosting and cake. The last bite, however, could be mostly frosting.
