Sweet Giveaway: Macaron Art!

Guess what? It's that special time of year when CakeSpy's Head Spy Jessie celebrates her birthday. Booyea!

What does that mean for you, though? Well, if you're in Seattle, it means that there will be free birthday cake every day this week (Tue-Sun) at the CakeSpy Shop! First come first served.

But even if you're not in Seattle you can enter to win some totally sweet stuff! There will be giveaways all week, starting with this super sweet prize pack, perfect for macaron lovers: a miniature original watercolor CakeSpy painting (the original! Not a print!) of macarons and burger hanging out, and the cutest crochet macaron you've ever seen, made by the lovely and amazing Alicia Kachmar!

Want to put yourself in the running? Simply put your answer to the important baked-good question below in the comments section below. This giveaway will close on Sunday, August 29 at 12 p.m. PST, and the winner will be contacted shortly after. US and Canada entries only this time, please!

Are macarons "the new cupcake"?

I don't think so. Cupcakes are worldwide, a little more universal, if you will. ;) Simply the fact that macarons are so...french!...I think makes them automatically less accessible? Eh. I dunno. They sure are friggin' good though!

A cupcake is a cupcake is a cupcake. Nothing will ever replace the beloved miniature cake, but its front page of the tabloid status may dwindle from time to time, and be replaced with other specialties such as the macaron. There may be Lindsey Lohan attempts to dethrone the cupcake and make the macaron the new hit sensation, but after a few weeks people will become tired of the drama and find their delectable childhood goodie again. The macaron wants its five minutes of fame whereas the cupcake wants an academy award and to be remembered forever.

No - while they are certainly gaining in popularity, I don't think that they will ever gain the mass appeal of the cupcake (in the United States), but that is okay. The glory of the macaron can be confined to us serious dessert connoisseurs!

I looove cupcakes, but I couldn't in good conscience say they would win out because *gasp* I have never had a macaroon.

Nothing will ever replace "The Cupcake"... but everything that tries, like the macaroon, certainly provide tasty adventures for the rest of us!

No, I don't think macarons are the new cupcake. I love macarons, but I think they are a bit more special than cupcakes, not nearly as easy to make. Cupcakes are a bit more everyday, even though they can be dressed up quite a bit!

Not the new cupcake. I attempted to make macarons once and they were more difficult than cupcakes and made more dirty dishes.

macarons are a cupcake's best friend! they have no intention of replacing them

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterBeverly

I'd say no but they sure are cute and delicious! :D

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Mmmm, I don't think so. They might me my new oreo, though!

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterDawn

Hmm, Cupcakes do seem to be going out, but I'm not sure if mac's will replace them. I don't see someone ordering macaroons instead of cupcakes for a birthday! Maybe if it is just a get together. Delicious!

Never! Cupcakes and macarons will forever live in harmony. They're just too different to be compared. One cannot edge the other out.

Here in DC, the macaron was but a blip on the food scene while cupcakes are still going strong. While knit macarons are cute, real macarons aren't nearly as cute as cupcakes :)

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterMeg

No - they are both great! best ever would be a macaron on top of a cupcake ;)

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterNina

For me personally, never. I just love cakey softness. So I hope the macarons don't *replace* cupcakes. But they're more than welcome to join the party :)

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterKim

Macaroons are a cute foodie fad (pastel colors and all) but cupcakes rule.

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterJudith

I think people will always like cupcakes and there'll always be a niche for macarons, but in terms of fads I don't think macarons will get as popular as cupcakes -- at least not outside the food blogs and those of us that read them :)

What an adorable crochet macaron. I want one!

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

The only new cupcake, is a freshly baked cupcake! Viva la gâteau de tasse!!!!

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterAimee Stewart

I think it all depends on where do you want your surprise? I sometimes crave for the frosting on top of a cuppie, but other moments I want the fun to be in the middle! It all depends.

♥ I guess it all comes down to which dessert is wearing the googlie eyes! ;)

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

No, I don't think they will replace the cupcake. At least I hope not since I love cupcakes so much!!

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

No, I don't think so although I wish they would be available in more shops. Charleston, SC finally has a true French bakery that has them but not in massive quantities but I'll take that any day!!!

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterMarisah

neverrrrrr! cupcakes for life!

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterKari M

Oh I thnk not! Macaroons are nice, but cupcakes rule! It's just not the same sticking a candle in a macaroon. And what about having fun with great frosting! Ummmmm I especially love the little mini cupcakes so that you can indulge in more taste testing of flavors. One for each finger.

August 25 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

Macaroons are popular and trendy, hott even. But cupcakes are 'queen'. A mom and daughter can make up a batch of cupcakes together, you can stick a candle in a cupcake, hand someone a adorabley frosted and blinged out cupcake and you will see their eyes widen in delight, a macaroon just doesn't have that "ooo la la" appeal!
