A Very Special Cake Poll and Giveaway: It's Cakespy's Birthday!

It's giveaway time!
Do you remember the day you were born, Cakespy? After all, it was one year ago--on August 1----that we made our inaugural post. How the time has gone! In some ways we can't believe it's been a year, and yet at the same time, it seems inconceivable that it's only been a year. One sugar-filled, dentist's nightmare of a year.

While we could regale you with the story of Cakespy's birth, we thought it would be much funner to have a poll and give away some sweet stuff! In keeping with the birthday theme, our subject is birthday cake. And since it's a special day, there will be not one but four winners!
  • Winner 1 will get the original painting shown at the top;
  • Winner 2 will get a Cakespy T-Shirt (Unisex sizes XS-L, winner will be notified and asked for a size; no need to put it in your response);
  • Winners 3 and 4 will receive a box of 10 assorted Cakespy Notecards!
The fine print: The poll will be closed at 12 noon PST on Wednesday, August 6th; responses may be posted in the comments section or emailed to jessieoleson@gmail.com. As usual, winners will be chosen at random, and will be assigned prizes in the order mentioned above (sorry, no swapping). Entries from the US and beyond are welcome. Your info will never be shared and these questions are solely motivated by our nosy spy tendencies.
Cake Poll: Birthday Cake!
  1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
  2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
  3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
  4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
  5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
  6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
  7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
  8. What's the best thing about birthday cake?

Please note--the poll is CLOSED!

1 - My cupcakes were storebought for the majority of my childhood, but on my second birthday my mom made a Big Bird cake and for my fourth birthday she custom ordered a cake in the shape of Mickey Mouse.

2 - I have never had my favorite kind of cake - Chocolate on Chocolate. They are usually white on white or whatever someone else brings me. So to have chocolate on chocolate would be good!

3- NO - whipped cream frosting is just not the same to me. I feel like I am getting fooled. I ike old schooled, full fat icing!

4 - Of course - someone has to!

5 - I don't like fillings in my cake - I once had a cake with raspberry filling that was just all wrong.

6 - Ice cream cakes are good; it's like a two for one deal. I couldn't imagine making one, though.

7 - There is nothing wrong with that, but I prefer tradition, so I would want a cake.

8 - The best thing about a birthday cake is getting to cut the first piece and eat your name!

1) strawberry cake with strawberries on top.
2) baked alaska
3) what? why bother?
4) nope!
5) sweet surprise!
6) so so awesome!!
7) no, although it somehow seems a little "less" of a special treat. i've had birthday pies several times though.
8) the feeling that it's *yours* and that it's perfectly acceptable to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the following days if you want to.

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterAllison

1. I almost always chose strawberry cake with buttercream or cream cheese frosting.

2. Mmmm...German chocolate!

3. whipped cream frosting is good, but I prefer a good buttercream...or chocolate

4. Who doesn't like the frosting from the candles? Waste not, want not.

5. I've really only had raspberry filling (which I LOVE), so I can't vote on any others.

6. I've had good and bad ice cream cakes. It all depends on where they come from and if they're properly frozen.

7. birthday cake, birthday pie, birthday cookies, birthday pudding - they're all yummy ways to celebrate a milestone

8. It's usually free!

Cake Poll: Birthday Cake!

What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
I remember that my favorite was a round white cake, i think with white icing, with a little toy train on top with animals in the train cars. So I guess it was a zoo train cake. My twin sister and I were sick one year so my mom made Play Doh cakes so that we could blow out the candles without blowing germs on the real cake.

What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
I want a monkey cake from my favorite baker, shara lunn. See it here: http://cakesbysharalunn.blogspot.com/2008/05/monkey-cupcakes-and-face.html

Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain) No. All butter buttercream icing is the best.

Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
Of course.

Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
If it's done right, it's a treat.

Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
There is no such thing as an awful cake.

Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? My husband always requests a blueberry pie for his birthday. He demands canned blueberry pie filling and a pre-made crust from the frozen section at the grocery store. No home made touches necessary (or desired).

What's the best thing about birthday cake?
The moistness of the cake, the creamy, sweet icing, and everybody singing "happy birthday to you."

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterJoan

1) Either yellow or chocolate cake, usually homemade.
2) Anything delicious and cake-like
3) I have never met a frosting that I didn't like, although I certainly have my favorites. Whipped cream frosting is just fine.
4) Heck yeah! No need to let good frosting go to waste. :)
5) Delicious on some cakes, but preferably not on birthday cakes.
6) Awesome and fun for retro-style birthdays, but somehow not as satisfying as a good cakey cake.
7) No, not wrong, just sad.
8) Um, the delicious deliciousness? The perfect balance of moist crumb and sweet frosting? The birthday? The cake? What's not to like?!?

Happy Birthday to yooooooo!

1. My Grandma would make that cake with the Barbie doll sticking out and the cake was her skirt. Sooo 70's!
2. For my Dad's b-day I made a chocolate sour cream cake with crushed oreos in the vanilla buttercream frosting, then chocolate buttercream over that. It was sooo good! I want that!
3. No! I like heavy, buttery buttercream, don't give me any of that whipped cream "frosting". No!
4. No, it tastes like wax. Blecch!
5. Well, I suppose there is a place for fruit in the middle. But, I can't think of it.
6. Ice cream cakes are something to be endured at parties. Not my choice.
7. Yes! Wrong! Don't do it! Oh, the humanity!
8. Frosting. I also like the smell of birthday candles being blown out! Well, after they're blown out.
Thanks for the opportunity to get presents on your birthday!!

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterCheryl

1. Chocolate
2. Chocolate
3. No
4. Oh Yes!
5. Sweet Surprise
6. Awesome
7. Yes
8. Eating it

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterZoë

1. One of those barbie cakes where you stick the naked torso of a doll in a big hoop skirt cake. oh yeah!
2. Lemon, always lemon. Preferably pound cake, with lemon curd on it.
3. Yes, I like whipped cream. A LOT.
4. Not a fan of normal frosting - oh - unless it's cream cheese!
5. Fruit filling always welcome.
6. Good Ice Cream cakes - Awesome! good = mint chocolate chip variety
7. Birthday pie (my dh loves apple) is fine by me. If there's butter and flour involved, sounds like birthday dessert!
8. You can eat it for breakfast, because after all, it is YOUR day!

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterAmylouwho

Happy Birthday, and fun poll!
1. I always got a white cake with lemon filling from Helen Bernhard Bakery in Portland, OR. They had very tasty frosting roses.
2. My next birthday is coming up soon! I think I want a lemon cake or a chocolate one with some hints of coffee in there. Or maybe red velvet cake. I think I will bake my own.
3. Sure, I love whipped cream frosting!
4. Who doesn't?
5. Fruit filling is fine, but it depends on the cake. I am not super crazy about fruit combined with chocolate.
6. I love ice cream cakes.
7. My husband always has cream cheese pie for his birthday. He says he doesn't like cake. Whatever.
8. Cake is always good, no matter what the occasion. We should eat cake on a daily basis!

August 1 | Unregistered Commentermariko

1) I had a tiered layer cake, I think when I was five or so, which was so awesome! It was chocolate cake with vanilla frosting and those candy covered animal crackers all around each layer. It was beautiful!!
2) For my upcoming b-day, I'm thinking cupcakes. Hard to say what kind I will create but Nutella will be a staple.
3) ..whipped cream = topping, not frosting... not for me at least!
4) How could I resist! Why else is it better getting older except more candles to lick?!
5) Fruit filling.. not good for me.. not in donuts, not in cakes.. definitely not a subsitute for frosting in the middle!
6) Ice cream cake totally awesome! I personally prefer to have a higher cake ratio, but that's just me.
7) I think depending on when your birthday is, a pie could be strange. Around thanksgiving? Christmas? 4th of July? I say great. But most other times, I'm not into it.
8) I think making the birthday cake is the most fun. Eating it is great, but regardless of if it's for you or someone you love, it's fun to decorate and make the cake the center of a great celebration!

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterLauren

1.My mom's special chocolate chip cookie cake.

2.I'll be happy with any kind of cake (I'm a big fan.) Maybe some poppyseed. Maybe CUPCAKES! Maybe I can't wait till my birthday...

3.Absolutely. Truth be told, I usually scrape the majority of frosting off unless it's really super good or really super bad (in the Michael Jackson sense, of course.)And whipped is so very bad.

4.Every chance I get.

5.Fruit does not belong in my cake. Unless, of course it's raspberry in my poppyseed.

6. Awesome. They hold a special place in my heart. Like Captain Kangaroo and Bozo the Clown.

7.Yes. Very. The very idea is rubbish.

8.Leftovers. Nothing says "Aging with grace" like half a cake for breakfast.

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterMary

1. My mom used to make cute "cut apart cakes", you know, cut pieces off a round cake and reposition them into the ears of a rabbit, or whatever.
2. Any cake that I don't have to make myself, but chocolate for sure.
3. Depends on the cake, for shortcake, yes, for everything else NO.
4. I don't want no stinkin' candles on my cake! Would have to have an extinguisher handy! But I used to lick 'em.
5. The sweeter the surprise the better!
6. Awesome but only with the chocolate crunchies, no actual cake in my ice cream cake please!
7. Whoopie Pie is like cake???
8. It symbolizes so many great things all wrapped up into one yummy feast both for the eyes and mouth. It's fun to make but more fun when everyone is gathered around together to celebrate!

August 1 | Unregistered Commentercakegrl

Happy Birthday!

1.My mom always made us a homemade cake, usually a chocolate one, with lots and lots of icing and sprinkles.
2. I'm going to go with Dairy Queen ice cream cake, since that was what I had for my birthday last week, and because it's become tradition since DQ opened in my town and their cakes became available...and since my mom is across the country and unable to make a cake for me.
3. Yes, as long as it's REAL whipped cream, not that oily dream whip stuff.
4. Yes.
5. Love a fruit filling!
6. Awesome! Awesome!
7. No. Not everyone likes cake (hard to believe, I know, but it happens!).
8. I get to eat the leftovers for breakfast the next day.

1. Mom always made some home made goodies. There were lots of different ones.

2.The kind made with love...dahhhh.

3. Yeah I like it.

4. Candles were banned on my cakes long ago.

5. I like fruit! Yum.

6. Awesome!

7. Pie don't need no reason.

8. Sharing!

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? I had cabbage patch cake, baked from a cabbage patch pan, and decorated w/ a star tip, with a matching doll! I was SO happy

What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? I absolutely love Bostom cream pie (even though its called a pie, its still cake!)

Whipped cream frosting: yes or no?
I like it once in a while, but buttercream is where its at!

Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? Sure do!!!!

Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
Well, for me, its a sweet suprise, I love fruit filling! For my husband is a mortifying disappointment lol. he really hates fruit and cake together.

Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
I have only tasted very few of them, but I like them for a nice change of pace.

Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? No!! Its your birthday, you should get what you like!

What's the best thing about birthday cake? Hmmm I like it all, decorations, sprinkles, frosting. I guess if I HAD to pick just one thing I would pick slicing into a big yummy cake and seving up a giant slice of yummy moist cake. Yum!!

Happy Birthday Cakespy!

1. My mom is a good baker, but for my birthday it was a treat to get bakery white cake with vanilla buttercream frosting and cake crumbs, lemon filling, and pink roses. And Mom would put ballerina candle-holders on the cake. Yum.
2. I still like the same kind of cake for my birthday. Only bakeries never seem to use cake crumbs anymore. :( I also wouldn't mind a home-made yellow cake with seven-minute icing.
3. Whipped cream is ok, but always a bit of a disappointment. It doesn't stand up to refrigeration or sitting out as well as buttercream does.
4. Yes. It makes me feel terribly naughty. It's as if I'm 6 years old again.
5. If it's lemon, yes. For some reason, chocolate pudding isn't as good a filling, and I don't like strawberries (which may be why I also dislike whipped cream on cakes- usually those cakes have strawberry filling).
6. I must admit to liking Carvel's Fudgy the Whale- i love the crunchies in the middle! So I will say 'yes.'
7. If it's lemon meringue or lemon sponge, no. I adore both.
8. All the yummy things that go along with it- ice cream sundaes, presents, balloons and conical hats. And cake for breakfast for about a week.

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterCarpenoctem

1. My sixth birthday party looked like the little mermaid exploded in our living room, and all over the cake.

2. I LOVE yellow cake with chocolate frosting and vanilla ice cream. Classic.

3. NO! Thick, heavy, makes you feel like you need to brush your teeth after you eat it buttercream is the way to go.

4. Yes, no sense in letting good frosting go to waste.

5. Depends on the type of fruit.

6. AWESOME!

7. No, if the birthday girl/boy prefers pie over cake, then I say let them eat pie.

8. The glorious marriage of spongy cake and sugar laden frosting.

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterTori

1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? My mom always decorated cakes from the Wilton pans and my favorite was the bubblegum machine with gumballs on it :-)
2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? Carrot Cake with cream cheese icing...yum
3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain) I love to eat it because it's not too sugary sweet
4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? Of course!
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? Always a good surprise
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? It's pretty good most of the time
7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? No, everybody should have whatever dessert they want for their birthday
8. What's the best thing about birthday cake? Getting to share it with your friends and family :-)

August 1 | Unregistered Commenterashley884

1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? my mom usually made something for me...whatever it was i decided on at the time. i had a lot of funfetti cakes, ice cream cakes, and white cakes with buttercream.

2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? that depends on where i will be for my birthday...but honestly i'll take a huge white cake with butter cream frosting over pretty much anything any day!

3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? NO! it just...does not taste good.

4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? ummm of course!

5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? i hate fruit filling, i always scrap it off

6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? totally awesome

7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? i would say so...but that's because my motto is cake>pie

8. What's the best thing about birthday cake? the leftovers. put them in the fridge and eat them the next morning...or afternoon...when you wake up, and probably a little hungover from the night before:)

August 1 | Unregistered Commenter*jessiE*

1. strawberry shortcake, or if it fell on Passover - as it sometimes does, deeeeelicious cheesecake!
2. tiramisu
3. oh yes. yes yes yes.
4. um... are there people in existence who do NOT do this???
5. this depends entirely on the nature of the filling; if there are slimy chunks of fruit in there, I'm not buying. But if it's a gorgeous whipped confection such as key lime or lemon meringue or even a silky curd, I'm allllll over it.
6. awesome POSSUM.
7. a pie is never wrong. never.
8. pomp and circumstance.

August 1 | Unregistered Commentermimzywhimzy

Fun!
1) Usually a chocolate ice cream cake from Carvel (you East Coasters know the deal - and the little chocolate "gravel" between the layers...mmmm)

2) Anything with chocolate, raspberries and some sort of liquor....grown-up mmmmm.

3) Yes, licking that sweet tasty goodness off your fork (and body parts...I kid) is the best part.

4) Only when no one else is around.

5) Sweet surprise if it's berry-related and not too overpowering.

6) Ice cream cakes: AWESOME. One of the greatest inventions known to food.

7) Pies, cupcakes, sorbet...whatever as long as you get dessert and force people to sing to you.

8) Sharing it - and for once in our lives, something we enjoy that we don't feel guily about (Hey, it's my birthday, to heck with healthy eating!)

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterRed Slice

1. I got box cake mix, frosting from the jar, and sprinkles. I remember one time at a pizza hut birthday party that I received a Nickelodeon cake with slime on top of it.

2. I'd like whatever my husband decides to make me. On my last birthday he made me pacman and one of the ghosts. :)

3. No, it doesn't last and tastes better on pie!

4. No, there's always that waxy taste...I'm not above stealing frosting from other parts of the cake and other people's plates though!

5. Wouldn't everyone rather have some MORE delicious frosting in the middle?

6. Ice cream cakes are delicious. It'd be hard to make an ice cream pie.....or would it?

7. A thousand times yes, it is my opinion that birthdays were created as an excuse to eat cake.

8. The happiness it brings, not only for the birthday person, but the people around them. Blowing out candles (if there are any) and making your special wish!
