A Very Special Cake Poll and Giveaway: It's Cakespy's Birthday!
Thursday, July 31, 2008
Do you remember the day you were born, Cakespy? After all, it was one year ago--on August 1----that we made our inaugural post. How the time has gone! In some ways we can't believe it's been a year, and yet at the same time, it seems inconceivable that it's only been a year. One sugar-filled, dentist's nightmare of a year.
While we could regale you with the story of Cakespy's birth, we thought it would be much funner to have a poll and give away some sweet stuff! In keeping with the birthday theme, our subject is birthday cake. And since it's a special day, there will be not one but four winners!
- Winner 1 will get the original painting shown at the top;
- Winner 2 will get a Cakespy T-Shirt (Unisex sizes XS-L, winner will be notified and asked for a size; no need to put it in your response);
- Winners 3 and 4 will receive a box of 10 assorted Cakespy Notecards!
The fine print: The poll will be closed at 12 noon PST on Wednesday, August 6th; responses may be posted in the comments section or emailed to jessieoleson@gmail.com. As usual, winners will be chosen at random, and will be assigned prizes in the order mentioned above (sorry, no swapping). Entries from the US and beyond are welcome. Your info will never be shared and these questions are solely motivated by our nosy spy tendencies.

Cake Poll: Birthday Cake!
1. Vanilla cake with thick yummy buttercream frosting. I always wanted the corner with the biggest rose.
2. Cupcakes! That way you can have more than one.
3. No, never, whipped cream isn't frosting!
4. Yes, I always lick frosting from anything.
5. Fruit filling freaks me out. I want my sugar and fruit separate.
6. Ice cream cakes are awesome!
7. Yes, birthday pie is wrong. I can't explain, it just is.
8. The one day a year you can eat as much frosting without people looking at you like you're crazy.
Happy Birthday CakeSpy!!!
What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
The one I remember the most was chocolate and it was a tennis theme (no idea why, I was never into tennis) and it had cute tiny plastic Coke bottles as decorations that were Barbie sized and I loved those.
What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
Oh this is so hard but my favorite is still chocolate with cream cheese icing.
Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
Yes! I know some people think it's an abomination but I like how light and fluffy it is.
Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
In front of people, no. :)
Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
It depends on the fruit but generally yes.
Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
Awfully delicious!
Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
Yes.
What's the best thing about birthday cake?
Getting the first piece and no one can say a thing about it or how big it is!
1. Apparently my mom made me a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting for my first birthday; however, as soon as I was old enough to pick, I chose coffee ice cream cake.
2. Apple Crumb cake (I'll eat Ice cream anyway)
3. That's really the only type of frosting I'll eat. I'll taste other frostings and then scrape them off.
4. Yes! That's when I taste the frosting!
5. Apple crumble cake is an exception b/c of the apple chucks, but otherwise I don't care for jams/fruit purees = disappointment.
6. LOVE ICE CREAM CAKES!
7. No! I love apple crisp or berry crisp... ooo or pumpkin pie!
8. It's for you!
Happy blogiversary! I just celebrated my second.
Cake Poll: Birthday Cake!
1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
Usually chocolate, but I remember one really great strawberry themed birthday with all the neighbor kids, and a great strawberry cake!
2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
Something dark, chocolatey, ganachey, and bad for me.
3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
No, particularly not the grocery stuff. I used to get covered by the stuff when I was a cake decorator. Although, I have a special place in my heart for a freshly frosted chocolate cake with the chocolate whipped cream frosting....

Heck yeah.
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
I'm particularly fond of surprising fruits, like kiwi or kumquat.
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
Awful. Cake is not meant to be eaten the temperature required for the ice cream to be served solid. Unfortunately my husband insists on an icecream cake for his birthday every year, when I could do so much better!
7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
I would like to say no. This year for my birthday I had birthday cheesecake, wanting something different, but by the next day had to go out and buy cake and icecream because the day was just wrong.

That first bite of sugary goodness!

in a cake? uncalled for.

Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
no. i believe the birthday person should have whatever dessert s/he desires!
What's the best thing about birthday cake?
2 things:
if it's your birthday you get the biggest piece!

Cake Poll: Birthday Cake
1. Chocolate cake with "Pink" vanilla flavored frosting
2. White cake with Mocha buttercream frosting
3. NO!! Butter tastes SO much better than AIR!
4. Licking frosting from the candles is a REQUIREMENT at birthdays, right?
5. Disappointment, More yummy frosting PLEASE!
6. Ice cream cakes are awful, the cake part is almost always D-R-Y!
7. No, pies can be good only IF they contain scrumptious ingredients. Here fruit can be GREAT!
8. The VERY best thing about birthday cake is a BIG, hunk of cake right out of the fridge next morning. With a side of coffee!
Cake Poll: Birthday Cake!
1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? ICE CREAM CAKE
2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? OREO CHEESECAKE
3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain) NO - I LOVE THE SUGARY GOODNESS OF BUTTERCREAM!
4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? NOT ANYMORE, BUT I USED TO!
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? ONLY STRAWBERRY!
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? AWESOME!! (SEE #1)
7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? MAYBE A LITTLE BIT, BUT I MADE MY FATHER IN LAW A COCONUT CREAM PIE FOR HIS BIRTHDAY LAST YEAR!
8. What's the best thing about birthday cake? IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!
1. Red Velvet, every time! My grandmother's next-door-neighbor was a true southern bell with some serious baking chops - she made my cake until I was seven.
2. Would I get harassed if I said I wanted soda-pop cake? Coke preferred? It's just... so good!
3. Yuck, no! It has no body to it.
4. Of course, but usually when no one is looking.
5. Depends on the fruit and the cake, but generally YUM!
6. Horrible! A pox upon cakes everywhere!
7. No, but I'll probably make fun of you for it.
8. The leftovers!
1. Hard question... Almst every year I choose a different cake, but I guess the one that I had for the larger amount of years was a Raspberry Marzipan Crêpe Cake (you know... infinite layers of crêpes filled with raspberry jam and marzipan). It was good, but I guess I blought it just because the bakery that sells it it's two blocks away from my house.
2. This is an easy peasy one. A cake named Puerto Varas which consists in a walnut genoise filled with sour cherry jam, dulce de leche and whipped cream (sounds gross but boy it's good!)
3. It really depens on the cake. For example, if I'm having a crêpe cake, whipped cream is not the choice... but if the cake is made of laters of genoise, whipped cream is fine.
4. Of course!
5. A sweet surprise.... as long as the filling is good and matches the rest of the cake.
6. Awful... alright, not awful, but more on that side. Cold stuff make my theeth hurt and I rather have some normal, room temperature cake.
7. Yes it's wrong! That is like giving Christmas gifts a random day of the year!
8. Here in Chile we have a tradition called "el tortazo" in which you are suppoused to take a small bite out of the cake after blowing the candles and when you're doing that people sink you in the cake... some people hate it because their hair and clothes get filled with cake plus, the top of the it gets ptetty ruined, but I just love it!
Happy 1 year Blog Anniversary! And thanks for the chance to win the cool prices!
What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
I always had vanilla / chocolate marble cake. Cake designs were from the womens weekly birthday cake book.
What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
Something chocolate, and layered with mousse.
Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
I have never had it, so would be up to trying it.
Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? Definately.
Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
If it was strawberry, then Yay! Otherwise a disapointment.
Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
Not really a fan.
Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
Sorry, no idea what Birthday pie is.
What's the best thing about birthday cake?
If its mine, I get to have the biggest piece.
1. ICECREAM CAKE! But that's because there was alot of birthdays at McDonalds... mmmmm i miss that cake
2. If I had a birthday, probably petits gateaux so they are easier to serve(yes i'm getting lazier.. signs of aging :(.. maybe) perhaps opera cakes or miniture tarts.
3. Depends on the cake, but if sponge then YES! with jam please :).
4. Yes, I admit I did it as a kid.. not sure if that has affected my brain or not..
5. Sweet surprise, helps balance the sweetness sometimes!
6. AWESOME!!!!
7. Nothing is wrong with having birthday. It could be a fruit pie or a chocolate pie, either way, share the happiness and love :).
8. That it's a cake :) and leftovers... hahaha i'm such a greedy fool :9
Happy birthday cakespy!
Let's see:
1) A chocolate cardboard cake sandwiched with some-kind-of-berry jam topped with I-can-believe-it's-not-cream and chocolate sprinkles. I believe they sold it as Blackforest cake.
2) I can't stop thinking about all those Filbert Gateau with Praline Buttercream that everyone's been baking. Right now, that sounds pretty good.
3) Yes. YES!
4) It's my party, I'll lick if I want to!
5) It would depend on the cake, I suppose. And the fruit.
6) Pretty awesome, especially if the ice cream is home-made and say, Salted Butter Caramel or something.
7) I believe one should always have your cake, and eat your pie. I'd have both, but if you made me choose I'd pick cake. It's only right.
8) That you get the first piece. And the last piece. And everyone's always urging you to have more.
Happy first birthday to Cakespy! It has single-handedly turned my mind to emigrating just to taste all the great goodies you've reported on across the States.
My answers to the Cake Poll are:
1. I usually had icecream cake because my brother and I weren't that fond of regular cake (other than the icing) as kids.
2. I have just seen the most amazing triple layer Peach Melba Cake with Raspberry Cream - that's the one!
3. Yes - decadence itself! Only with real cream, not the yukky mock variety.
4. No - I'd be scared I was going to burn my tongue off. And I'd feel weird about reusing the candles afterwards.
5. Definitely a sweet surprise - I'm a fruity chick!?!
6. Awesome - see answer to question one.
7. Nope - if you wanna pie instead of a traditional cake for your birthday, then you shall have one.
8. Definitely the "oohs" and "ahs" when everyone marvels in its glory when it is first brought out and when the first slice is cut. That's why a birthday cake should be a real celebration number.
Here's to another sweet year from the Cakespy team - cheers.
Happy First Birthday Cakespy!
1. My maternal grandmother usually made my cakes and I especially remember two cakes - one was a doll cake (like the one described by Julie above) and the other was a strawberry layer cake made with fresh strawberries, moist white cake and a whipped cream frosting. Absolutely delicious!
2. Dulce de Leche Cheesecake.
3. I do not care for heavy frostings and like a whipped cream as an alternative depending on the type of cake.
4. I have been known to do it a time or two...
5. If it is a fresh fruit filling, then yes. No canned fillings.
6. I am in the middle on ice cream cakes. They are okay.
7. It is not wrong and besides it's the birthday person's choice. My son just turned 17 and he wanted a Key Lime Pie for his birthday so that is what I made.
8. Creating and designing it and then watching everyone's expression when they eat it!
1. Bumpy cakes were the more memorable ones.
2. Vanilla cake with caramel frosting.
3. No
4. Yes
5. I like fruit if the cake part is not chocolate. I'm not a big fruit and chocolate person and fruit always tends to make chocolate cake soggy.
6. Ice cream cakes are good but if I'm craving cake they don't satisfy.
7. Of course not! Pie is great.
8. Having the perfect combination of cake and frosting and getting that perfect bite of it.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LITTLE CAKESPY!
1. When I was little, my mom would always make me this delicious fudgy chocolate cake, and the frosting was a weird but yummy combo of chocolate frosting and chocolate pudding. SO GOOD.
2. Actually, it was just my birthday on July 29th! I made the best cake ever...it was layers of ice cream sandwiches, cool whip, crushed butterfingers and milano cookies, more ice cream sandwiches, more cool whip, and more crushed butterfingers and milano cookies. :D
3. OBVIOUSLY FROM MY RESPONSE ABOVE...HELL YES! :D
4. Yes I definitely am guilty as charged. I just licked my "2" and "0" candles a few days ago :D
5. I think it depends on the fruit. Strawberries or any other kind of berries, YUM. Bananas, GROSS.
6. AGAIN, MY RESPONSE ABOVE SAYS, HELL YES :D
7. I think it's totally immoral to have birthday pie instead of birthday cake. Although if someone else makes it for you, you shouldn't complain, as long as it's chocolate pudding pie :D
8. The best thing about birthday cakes is that you can eat them and not feel guilty about it. You can have 2, 3, hell even 4 pieces, and no one will judge you, because it's YOUR birthday, and they know that they did the same exact thing on THEIR birthday :D
