A Very Special Cake Poll and Giveaway: It's Cakespy's Birthday!

It's giveaway time!
Do you remember the day you were born, Cakespy? After all, it was one year ago--on August 1----that we made our inaugural post. How the time has gone! In some ways we can't believe it's been a year, and yet at the same time, it seems inconceivable that it's only been a year. One sugar-filled, dentist's nightmare of a year.

While we could regale you with the story of Cakespy's birth, we thought it would be much funner to have a poll and give away some sweet stuff! In keeping with the birthday theme, our subject is birthday cake. And since it's a special day, there will be not one but four winners!
  • Winner 1 will get the original painting shown at the top;
  • Winner 2 will get a Cakespy T-Shirt (Unisex sizes XS-L, winner will be notified and asked for a size; no need to put it in your response);
  • Winners 3 and 4 will receive a box of 10 assorted Cakespy Notecards!
The fine print: The poll will be closed at 12 noon PST on Wednesday, August 6th; responses may be posted in the comments section or emailed to jessieoleson@gmail.com. As usual, winners will be chosen at random, and will be assigned prizes in the order mentioned above (sorry, no swapping). Entries from the US and beyond are welcome. Your info will never be shared and these questions are solely motivated by our nosy spy tendencies.
Cake Poll: Birthday Cake!
  1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
  2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
  3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
  4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
  5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
  6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
  7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
  8. What's the best thing about birthday cake?

Please note--the poll is CLOSED!

Really? I'm first? That hardly seems possible.
1. A doll cake. The cake was the dress and a Barbie doll (clothed in frosting) made up the torso and head. Yum.
2. Chocolate with ganache
3. No. Whipped cream is good for strawberries, not cake.
4. Of course!
5. Disappointment. Fruit is NOT dessert.
6. Awful. You have to keep them frozen to keep the ice cream from melting and then the cake texture is ... well, FROZEN! Or if you thaw it a bit you get soggy cake.
7. Wrong, wrong, wrongity, wrong, wrong....
8. Eating it. (Is it a trick question?)

1) Usually a white cake with buttercream icing and then lettering, maybe some sprinkes...old school style
2) really good red velvet...umm so yummy
3)good for angel food cakes
4) yes
5) it depends on the filling. I have had some that are pretty tasty, like strawberry or lemon. Our wedding cake had kiwi filling (of course it was in Hawaii, so it worked out well)
6) Wicked Freakin Awesome!
7) I have to say no, b/c my husband is not a cake person, so I have on occasion made a birthday pie for him
8) Everything.

Well I never win these things, but in honor of your first birthday, I would be happy to throw my hat in the ring again. :)

1. A rainbow cake. I think it might have been an ice cream cake, but I can't quite remember now. All that mattered was that it had this huge mass of frosting on top fashioned after a colorful rainbow.
2. Hard to say... Maybe matcha?
3. As long as it's whipped soy cream! I actually like it better than buttercream much of the time, since it isn't so heavy.
4. Of course! Why would you waste perfectly good frosting?
5. Depends on the cake. I can't really say one way or the other for sure.
6. Awesome! Just don't let them sit out for too long. ;)
7. As long as it makes you happy, I say go for it.
8. You get to share it with the people who care about you most (hopefully)

What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
cake mix kind.. usually chocolate

What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? strawberry cheesecake!

Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain) yes. no frosting is bad frosting
Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? yes. no use letting good cake go to waste

Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?mm.. filling
Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?yummy! awesome

Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? no! i love all desserts! and if it's your birthday, it's your choice!

What's the best thing about birthday cake? making a wish on the candles

1. Mostly Pavlova with just cream. Yup. Cream. And between 1 and 5, a snail with five holes in its shell for birthday candles.
1a. Screw you, "Pavlova isn't a cake". YOUR FACE isn't a cake!
2. ...Pavlova with cream. What? It's still the best.
3. Yes. YES YES YES. What with the Pavlova and all...
4. There may have been in incident, said incident may have resulted in looks of disgust and having to fish a tiny chunk of wax out of my mouth with my fingers >.>
5. Fruit != Cream. TOTAL disappointment.
6. Awesome... Especially Ice Cream Christmas Cakes.
7. Well, what with Aussies and all, we mainly eat Meat pies. I've seen a Meat "Cake" (Mince meat, mashed potato "icing", tomato sauce). So it's not wrong, per se...
8. It's cake. It's your birthday. There are no lies in evidence.
(Except perhaps about your age)
((And if you're lying about it being your birthday so you get cake))
(((Not that I would)))
((((Parentheses!))))

1. We always had chocolate or vanilla. It was unthinkable to kids to have anything else at the time ;)
2. Oh my. Chai latte, perhaps, or strawberry cream. Maybe red velvet, but I eat it so often already.
3. Yes! Sometimes certain cakes are just too heavy for regular frosting.
4. No one has seen me do it....yet... *cough*
5. Depends on the type of cake. In the middle of chocolate or vanilla? Kind of a disappointment.
6. I personally love them, since they remind me of being a kid.
7. No no, not at all! I love pie.
8. it's cake on your birthday. What's not to love? :)

# I remember at some point deciding that I really didn't like chocolate cake (!?!?!). My family's fave was always pineapple upside-down. End piece please!
# It's so far away, and I'm always thinking about what to make for other people, I don't know! As of this moment I'd have to go for a classic German chocolate.
# Mostly no - but I'm sure there's a lovely light cake out there that would deserve an equally light frosting
# Not as far as you know!
# More often than not a fruit filling isn't given the effort it requires, so it's not so tasty - but a good fruit filling can't be beat!
# Totally awesome.
# Hardly!
# It's CAKE!

What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? (Asian Bakery style cakes-spongy with a whipped cream like frosting with strawberries in them)

What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? (Dorie Greenspan's Devil's Food White-Out cake...)

Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Totally!, as from my previous answer, I'm use to it growing up, my guilty pleasure is having just a whip cream shot once in a while)

Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? (Actually...I've never thought to do it! I'm usually so excited just to get the candles out of the way and just cut into the cake!)

Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?(If it's fresh fruit pieces, I'm all for it, but I'm not too fond of the jam/preserves like fruit fillings)

Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? (Awesome! except when it's too frozen and I can't cut through it!)

Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? (YES, it is wrong...so wrong...)

What's the best thing about birthday cake? (It makes the birthday person happy and always comes out with a song!)

Oh man. I failed at numbering :(

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAKESPY!

baskin robbins ice cream cake... mint chocolate chip log roll kind

coconut cake made by my daughter.

yes please

it isn't a birthday without licking the candles. i don't understand why people are groosed out by that. it's not like you stick them back in the cake or anything.

dissapointment. i don't want some yucky sickly sweet fake strawbeery stuff in the middle of my cake!

awesome...

no, it's not wrong to have birthday pie. after all, it's your birthday.

it's for you.

happy birthday! i thought cakespy has been around longer!

Cake Poll: Birthday Cake!

1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? My mom used to make me chocolate cake shaped like Minnie Mouse's head. It was pretty awesome.
2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? Something with chocolate and peanut butter.
3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain) Yes. Not my favorite, but I won't turn my nose up at any frosting.
4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? Yes. Please see previous response re: turning nose up at any frosting.
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? Sometimes it's a sweet surprise, but usually I want something more bad for me. Like ganache or something.
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? I absolutely loved Dairy Queen's ice cream cakes when I was little, mainly because of the chocolate fudgy goo in the middle. Now I'd rather have regular cake.
7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? Yes. My husband asked me to make him a birthday pie for his last birthday, and the birthday gods were disgusted by the lack of cake and smote the pie and made it all runny and gross.
8. What's the best thing about birthday cake? When people don't eat a whole lot of it and you have lots of cake to eat instead of other meals for several days.

July 31 | Unregistered Commenternoisy penguin

1) I once ended up with three Postman Pat cakes for one birthday. I think they were vanilla cakes.
2) Probably something involving a lot of chocolate.
3)Yes. It's not my favourite frosting in the world but it has its place.
4) Oh yeah.
5) Sometimes it's ok but most of the time I'd prefer a something else like a cream or peanut butter filling.
6) I've never actually had an ice cream cake but they must be good if your birthday's in summer.
7) Yes. It's all about the cake.
8) It's all for you because it's your birthday.

1. Whatever whim my little brain could conjure--as long as Wilton had a pan for it. (My mom is cool.)

2. I just want any kind of cake. And actual cake. With candles. (My birthday is Christmas Day, which is NOT cool.)

3. Whipped cream frosting on the side, to be eaten while you're making something substantive.

4. Licking frosting from the bottom of candles? Yes yes and yes. Dipping the candles back in and licking them again? A million yes-es!

5. Fruit filling is friendly and fun. As long as it's strawberry. Otherwise, no way.

6. Ice cream belongs on the side of a cake on a plate, melting into the buttercream frosting. And strawberry filling. Ice cream cake? Awful.

7. Have pie for birthday breakfast, but there damn well better be a birthday cake.

8. Stealth frosting licking.

July 31 | Unregistered CommenterPenny

1. Red Velvet Cake. Though one year my mom made me an awesome yule log, complete with meringue mushrooms.
2. Red Velvet Cake! (always been my favorite, still is)
3. I guess it's ok, but I prefer buttercream, or cream cheese frosting
4. Definitely!
5. Depends; if it's made with real fruit I like it, but sometimes "fruit filling" tastes kind of artificial
6. Not my favorite, but I do enjoy ice cream cake from time to time
7. I wouldn't do it, but it's definitely ok. We always made my dad a rhubarb pie on his birthday when I was growing up
8. You get to eat as much as you want without feeling bad!

July 31 | Unregistered Commentermary

Love this! Here goes:

1. The classic, yellow cake with fudge frosting. Or a "Fudgie the Whale" ice cream cake from Carvel.

2. Oh man, I'll take any birthday cake with a smile! But first choices would be coconut cake, lemon-raspberry cake, or chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting.

3. Yes. Basically, if it has sugar in it, I'm in.

4. DUH - of course! Why let it go to waste?

5. Sweet surprise! As long as it's either real fruit or a good jam. If it's that goopy pie filling stuff, that is very, very bad.

6. AWESOME!!! Love ice cream. Love cake. Ice cream in cake form? Oh yes, please.

7. Absolutely not! It's your birthday - if you prefer pie, then that's what you should have! If someone protests... no pie for them.

8. Being surrounded by loved ones as they sing "Happy birthday" and present you with the cake. And getting to eat a piece of cake guilt-free -- hey, if it's your birthday, no calories!

July 31 | Unregistered CommenterCookiePie

1. I usually had a vanilla cake with my grandma's secret frosting recipe!
2. A deliciously moist vegan carrot cake with cream cheese frosting!
3. Yes!
4. Of course. I can't let it go to waste.
5. Definitely a sweet surprise if it's a delicious fresh fruit filling. I've had a fair share of fake syrupy fruit spreads in the middle, not good.
6. Good, for sure.
7. No way! There is never anything wrong about pie.
8. Even if it's not the best cake ever, birthday cake has never failed at making me smile!

July 31 | Unregistered Commentersweetpotato

3. Yes.

4. No.

5. A sweet surprise!

6. Awesome! Reminds me of being a kid again (see answer to #1).

7. No. It's your birthday--have what you want!

8. An easier question might be: what isn't the best thing about a birthday cake?

July 31 | Unregistered CommenterTanya

1. Barbie cake when my aunt was in charge, dinosaur cake when it was my brother.
2. Hmmm...can I have pecan pie for my Thanksgiving birthday?
3. Whipped cream frosting is GREAT :) Feels much lighter on my fork than Crisco in the bakery cakes.
4. I used to, until I realized that all the candles go back in the cupboard...
5. Om nom nom. If they're good.
6. Hmm...depends if they're fresh. But honestly, I don't think cake and ice cream go that well together.
7. For November birthdays, birthday pie is ALWAYS an option at the family gatherings!
8. Watching my toddler anticipate, receive, and ENJOY her slice immensely.

July 31 | Unregistered Commentermyrnie_twin

Happy Birthday Cake Spy!

1. For my birthday, we always had a buttercream cake with cream filling.

2. I want a cake with cherries, pineapple and cream. I love fruit in cakes.

3. I know most people love whipped cream, but I grew up on the buttercream so no to whipped cream frosting.

4. Nah I don't lick the candles because I don't like the taste that the candles leave on my tongue.

5. I Love fruit filling! Blueberries, cherries or pineapple only. I don't like strawberries or apples in there.

6. Ice cream cakes is good if it is made by a good backer. I like Carvel's ice cream cake, but not Baskin Robbins.

7. No pie is perfectly fine for birthdays and so is a cupcake tower.

8. The best thing about birthday cake is after everyone leaves and I eat the frosting off the remaining cake :)

**I hope I win 3rd or 4 place because I need some cards to a send to a little girl I sponsor in Haiti. She would love those cards. :)
