A Very Special Cake Poll and Giveaway: It's Cakespy's Birthday!

It's giveaway time!
Do you remember the day you were born, Cakespy? After all, it was one year ago--on August 1----that we made our inaugural post. How the time has gone! In some ways we can't believe it's been a year, and yet at the same time, it seems inconceivable that it's only been a year. One sugar-filled, dentist's nightmare of a year.

While we could regale you with the story of Cakespy's birth, we thought it would be much funner to have a poll and give away some sweet stuff! In keeping with the birthday theme, our subject is birthday cake. And since it's a special day, there will be not one but four winners!
  • Winner 1 will get the original painting shown at the top;
  • Winner 2 will get a Cakespy T-Shirt (Unisex sizes XS-L, winner will be notified and asked for a size; no need to put it in your response);
  • Winners 3 and 4 will receive a box of 10 assorted Cakespy Notecards!
The fine print: The poll will be closed at 12 noon PST on Wednesday, August 6th; responses may be posted in the comments section or emailed to jessieoleson@gmail.com. As usual, winners will be chosen at random, and will be assigned prizes in the order mentioned above (sorry, no swapping). Entries from the US and beyond are welcome. Your info will never be shared and these questions are solely motivated by our nosy spy tendencies.
Cake Poll: Birthday Cake!
  1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
  2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
  3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
  4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
  5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
  6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
  7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
  8. What's the best thing about birthday cake?

Please note--the poll is CLOSED!

Congratulations on your 1st year of life! You're becoming a big blog now!
I love your giveaways and polls, they're allways so fun to answer.

1- Since I can remember my mom would make an almond cake with chantilly for the family and buy a decorated one for the party with my little friends.
2- I was very happy with the one I had for my "last" b'day, witch was chocolate and tonka bean, might repeat that.
3- Yes oh yes. What's to explain? It's goooooood.
4- You have to! It's tradition to bit the bottom of the candles and make a wish, so you really need to lick them first.
5- What a tricky question! I would have to think more about this answer. Can I tell you tomorrow?
6- Are you kidding? How can ice-cream cakes be described as awful?
7- No, as long as you have a b'day something it's fine!
8- Best thing? Eat it the next day for breakfast!

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterClumbsy Cookie

1. I had the traditional kind, jammed sponge covered in icing with flowers that tasted like paper!

2. Oh! I think I'd like a chocolate cake, with chocolate cream filling and chocolate flakes standing up all round the edges and gorgeous cream all on the top with raspberries! Yum!

3. Oh Yes! Defo for whipped cream frosting - makes a cake transform from an everday cake to a special cake!

4. Ew! No thanks!

5. Mmmm nice surprise!

6. Not had an ice-cream cake... might be nice in summer time.

7. Oh no if you like pie then birthday pie is fine... after all it is your choice on your birthday!

8. You know that it has been made / chosen with you in mind... if its been made for you then people have been thinking about you when making it... awww a cake of love!

Happy Caking,
Annee x

Happy birthday cakespy!

What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
Sometimes a defrosted Sara Lee type gateau, other times a shop bought birthday cake. Never home made. I was deprived.....

What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
I shall be making it so am guaranteed to get what I want - haven't decided yet but it will be either vanilla or coconut, sponge, buttercream and possibly Betty Boop themed

Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
Not entirely sure what it is - do you mean whipped cream used as frosting? I have no objections to whipped cream- it perks up most things!

Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
No. That would suggest the cake didn't have enough frosting and I would never commit such a heinous crime

Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
I love fresh fruit in a cake. If by "filling" you mean some sloppy canned stuff then a major disappointment

Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
Never had one but the concept sounds pleasing.

Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
Yes.

What's the best thing about birthday cake?
Er - hello? Just look at the second word in the phrase "birthday CAKE" - do I really need to answer?

Cake Poll: Birthday Cake!

What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?

Carvel Ice Cream Cake - chocolate crunchies in the middle, ALWAYS.

What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?

Chocolate Fudge with a layer of vanilla fudge ice cream in the middle!

Whipped cream frosting: yes or no?

BIG YES :-)

Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?

It is Anti-American to leave the birthday candles UNlicked...

Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?

Fruit Filling - G-R-O-S-S!
I already explained my affinity for ice cream cake - no need to be redundant

Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?

It's so wrong, words cannot explain it.

What's the best thing about birthday cake?

Running your LEFT pinkie through your name BACKWARDS after you blow out the candles for good luck!!

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterJeanmarie

Happy Birthday, Cakespy! You are always the tastiest treat of my day!
1.Golden butter layer cake, with chocolate frosting.
2.Anything that is decorated with butter cream roses.
3.No – I like the more substantial flavor of butter cream frosting.
4.Absolutely – I lick the candle holders clean!
5.The only fruit filling that really works for me is strawberry or raspberry jam.
6.Ice cream cakes are often, especially after they sit out for a few minutes.
7.It is SO wrong. Only cake will do, and only cupcakes are a fitting substitute for a big one.
8.Crumbs and frosting.

Happy Birthday!!

1. Marble sheet cake with vanilla frosting

2. Yellow cake with caramel buttercream

3. Yes for cakes with strawberries layered into them - No for every other kind!

4. Heck yah, how can yo NOT lick the frosting off? It would be a waste

5. Sweet surprise as long as they don't skimp and the filling is juicy and squishy

6. Ice Cream cake = awful. I don't understand the appeal

7. Sometimes pie is fine. I make my mom a pie every year 'cause she hates cake 9sacrilige, I know...)

8. The icing is the best thing about a birthday cake. Oh and making a birthday wish

August 1 | Unregistered Commenternaida

Happy Birthday! How lucky for us that you were "born"!

The poll:

1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?--homemade, custom-decorated by my aunt, who was a caterer (usually chocolate with some fabulous design in multi-colors).

2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, with chocolate cream filling, chocolate ganache, chocolate truffle icing, chocolate curls as decoration.

3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)--no. Too airy for this chick.

4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? But of course! Why would you waste perfectly good frosting?

5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?--disappointment. More chocolate, please!

6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? Fine, but only if they're in ADDITION to the "real" cake.

7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? Do you even need to ask? OF COURSE IT'S WRONG.

8.What's the best thing about birthday cake? The frosting-rich corners (if it's a square cake); the frosting-rich forkfuls off the sides (if it's a round layer cake). Oh, and the fact that it means you're actually celebrating with someone else!

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterRicki

Happy happy birthday, Cakespy!

1) My mum made me this GREAT cake one year that was shaped like a carousel. It was two layers with horses and everything. It was awesome!

2) The carousel cake would be a nice comeback, I've got to say. But I'll be happy with just a chocolate cake with vanilla frosting.

3) No! I like my frosting to be a heavy buttercream.

4) Of course! Why waste food??

5) I honestly don't care much for fruit baked in things, so it is a bit of a disappointment. Cake doesn't need to attempt a healthy status. :)

6) A fabulous invention! (but nowhere as good as regular cake)

7) Not a problem at all! I usually get an apple pie for my birthday from my coworkers who can't cook vegan.

8) The fact that it's a once-a-year treat!

Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? yes

What's the best thing about birthday cake? your name scrawled across the top :)

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterBrittany

What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
The hideous sheet cake that came with the rest of the goodies at my McDonald's birthday parties

What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? A really deep, dark chocolate cake with vanilla frosting

Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
Absolutely not. Buttercream is the only way to go.

Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
No. Just give me the cake!

Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
Hmmm. That depends. I've had a really awesome Bungalow cake (chocolate and vanilla layers with strawberries and bananas in the middle), and I love lemon. But generally, no, fruit has no place in a cake.

Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
Homemade ice cream cakes can be delish.

Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
It's always wrong to choose pie over cake.

What's the best thing about birthday cake?
The cake! No, wait. The frosting! No, wait. The fact that you can eat the whole thing yourself and not feel guilty because it's YOUR birthday cake!

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterPatti

1.What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? Yellow Cupcakes with chocolate frosting

2.What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? A ginormous cupcake shaped cake.

3.Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)Yes, only if strawberries are involved.

4.Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? No!!! Dude you have a whole cake sitting there.

5.Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
Sweet surprise

6.Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? Just ok. No a big fan

7.Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? Yes

8.What's the best thing about birthday cake? It was made or purchased with you in mind.

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterDestini

1. It was yellow cake with white frosting and a ribbon of jelly in the middle. I hadn't discovered the perfection of a good chocolate cake yet.

2. A really, really good chocolate cake, unless some charitable Mexican woman is willing to make me a Tres Leches cake.

3. Whipped cream frosting is okay only when you will be eating the cake soon. Otherwise, it can taste a little off.

4. Licking frosting off candles is a must. So is impersonating Clint Eastwood in High Plains Drifter with your candle. It's your birthday, after all.

5. Fruit filling is always a lovely surprise unless it's too sweet or the filling is something a little too unexpected, like Cape Gooseberries, Soursop or Pitahaya. Ick.

6. Ice cream cakes can be good as long as they aren't too hard when you're about to eat them. And as long as they are NOT made of mint-chip ice cream.

7. It is not only wrong, but I believe it's punishable by caning in Singapore. No, just kidding: if you are a (resist urge to write "lowly") pie person, you should have whatever you want for your birthday because it is YOUR special day.

8. The best thing about birthday cake is that if I really wanted to, I could bury my face in it and take a huge bite and people would think it was some sort of charming if unhygienic birthday tradition.

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterMadame Meow

1. My aunt made me a cake (don't remember what kind) that looked like Strawberry Shortcake. Although, my favourites were always the DQ ice cream cakes.
2. Any. I didn't have one this year, although I made yummy vanilla cupcakes with Orange cream cheese frosting that were very good.
3. Yes, if the cake will be eaten right away. I made a pound cake that had chocolate whipped cream frosting. Yummy.
4. Yes
5. Unless it is Black Forest cake....no.
6. Awesome....when I was a kid. I got my dad one for fathers day....a bit of a disappointment now.

Natasha Armstrong
7. Nope, whatever floats your boat.
8. Someone else making it? Although it is a good excuse for cake.

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterTasha

1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? Chocolate or Ice cream.
2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? Gateau of any kind.
3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? Yes on some cakes, but no on others. For instance straight up chocolate cake really needs buttercream.
4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? Yes - mmmm
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? SWEET surprise
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? AWESOME!
7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? Nope. My Dad always had birthday pie because pie is his favourite. Afterall if it's your b-day you can have whatever you want!
8. What's the best thing about birthday cake? Leftover birthday cake for breakfast the next day!

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterJJW

1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? I loved the box mix with the "sprinkles" (I'm not sure they were really sprinkles) in the batter and the icing.

2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? I love a cookie cake or German chocolate

3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
sure - I'm not going to turn down frosting

4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? Of course- what a waste!

5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? A Sweet surpise as long as there is plenty of frosting elsewhere

6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? Awful - not because they taste bad but because you have to wait so long for them to thaw enough to taste right.

Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?

What's the best thing about birthday cake?

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterAK

1. Homemade cake with chocolate frosting and those little decorations my momwould put on top to make each cake unique.
2. carrot cake with cream cheese frosting--mmmmm!
3. Yes, on some cakes it is perfect
4. No licking candles here. Probably was chided as a kid :-)
5. Sweet surprise
6. In the summer--it's a big hit with the kids, and very refreshing.
7. Hey, if the birthday person wants pie, they get pie!
8. The best thing is that it's commemorating you and your special day--life is meant be be enjoyed, and you can't help doing that when presented with a birthday cake!

August 1 | Unregistered CommenterCarrie

1. funfetti!
2. oh, I don't know -- anything with a candle.
3. I like whipped cream frosting, as long as we're not talking cool whip.
4. Nah, someone else always takes the candles out. I don't judge, though.
5. In the middle of a cake: delicious. In the middle of a doughnut or a piece of chocolate: foul.
6. Awesome.
7. Not wrong at all. In fact, when it is your birthday, you get to do ANYTHING you want!
