A Very Special Cake Poll and Giveaway: It's Cakespy's Birthday!
Thursday, July 31, 2008
Do you remember the day you were born, Cakespy? After all, it was one year ago--on August 1----that we made our inaugural post. How the time has gone! In some ways we can't believe it's been a year, and yet at the same time, it seems inconceivable that it's only been a year. One sugar-filled, dentist's nightmare of a year.
While we could regale you with the story of Cakespy's birth, we thought it would be much funner to have a poll and give away some sweet stuff! In keeping with the birthday theme, our subject is birthday cake. And since it's a special day, there will be not one but four winners!
- Winner 1 will get the original painting shown at the top;
- Winner 2 will get a Cakespy T-Shirt (Unisex sizes XS-L, winner will be notified and asked for a size; no need to put it in your response);
- Winners 3 and 4 will receive a box of 10 assorted Cakespy Notecards!
The fine print: The poll will be closed at 12 noon PST on Wednesday, August 6th; responses may be posted in the comments section or emailed to jessieoleson@gmail.com. As usual, winners will be chosen at random, and will be assigned prizes in the order mentioned above (sorry, no swapping). Entries from the US and beyond are welcome. Your info will never be shared and these questions are solely motivated by our nosy spy tendencies.

Some good old German Kuchen. Mom always made the most yummy ones!
What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
Dark chocolate with either chillies or raspberries
Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
No, I'm not a big fan of whipped cream, except for molten in my hot chocolate.
Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
I never ever put the candles in the frosting (remembering a birthdaygirl who blew the wax all over the cake...), so no need to lick the frosting off.
Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
Sweet surprise, as long as it's really fruity and not too sweet.
Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
Never had one, but it sounds awesome to me
Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
Nope, some pies are about as good as cake :)
What's the best thing about birthday cake?
That it's your birthday and you get to share the cake with loads of lovely people
Happy Birthday, Cakespy!
1) What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
Actually, when I was little, I very rarely had cake for my birthday. That is because my birthday fell during lent (almost ALWAYS) and my family always gave up ice cream. I don't know why we didn't have regular cake instead of the ice cream cake, but every year, I would get a pudding pie. A delicious pudding pie, with a graham cracker crust, chocolate pudding, home made whipped cream, and almonds.
2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
Truth be told, we kind of stick with the pudding pie thing for my birthday now - its a tradition! But since I've gotten into cake decorating, I might whip something spiffy up for myself.
3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no?
Well, up until recently, my family either did ice cream cake from carvel, a box mix cake with homemade whipped cream, or a box mix cake with canned frosting. So I am a fan of whipped cream frosting, we make it great here. BUT, I do also like making my own buttercream. Yummy.
4 Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
Guilty as charged.
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
Depends. Strawberries are fantastic, but bananas? Not so much in cake.
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
Pretty awesome, no lie.
7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
Clearly not!
8. What's the best thing about birthday cake?
Since I usually don't have cake on my birthday, when I have birthday cake, that means its (for me) a random day with cake! And I love cake, so its fabulous.
1. Carvel ice cream cake
2. Red velvet
3. Whipped cream frosting is yummy!
4. I used to do it, but I'm not sure why I haven't in a while
5. Raspberry filling is the best (especially with chocolate cake!)
6. Love ice cream cakes!
7. It's your birthday. Have pie if you want to!
8. Sharing it with family and friends! =)
1. Angelfood cake
2. Icecream cake
3. Sure!
4. No, share that with the littles in our house
5. No thank you, I prefer virgin cake
6. So, awesome
7. There are no rules, though I am not a huge pie fan.
8. Eating leftovers?
Happy Birthday, Cakespy! xoxo
1. A doll cake but not the kind with the Barbie in it. A whole 30 inch long cake in the shape of a doll. There was also a 12 inch version which was always my personal birthday cake. No sharing of cake for this princess!
2. Moist, dark chocolate cake with fresh yummy almond buttercream. Alas, my husband has both chocolate and nut allergies so it will probaly be yellow cake with vanilla buttercream. Which is also delicious.
3. ew NO! Whipped cream frosting tastes metallic to me. I would rather not have any cake at all than have cake with whipped cream frosting.
4. Absolutley.
5. A sweet surprise, but not necessary.
6. Awful. Ice cream cakes usually have whipped icing on top. See my answer for #3.
7. No, as long as it's a delicious pie. And you must put candles in it.
8. The best thing about birthday cake is that you don't have to make it yourself, everyone thinks of you when they eat it, and no one will mind if you east the leftovers for breakfast.
Happy Birthday Cakespy!!!

Always, why waste the good stuff?

Real fruit, not from a can, sweet surprise. Otherwise, not so much.

Not a big fan.

Sweets on your birthday are never wrong.

Chocolate cake (from a box!) slathered and filled with lots and lots of buttercream.

3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
Yes! Or kind of yes! Birthdays never go by without a slice of cake topped with mounds of whipped cream, it's something my mom got me hooked on.
4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? Always and forever! I have to fight with my brothers when this stage comes around.
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? Depending on the fruit filling! I'm allergic to bananas but I'm not opposed to a strawberry filling!
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? Nah, awful. Never been a fan. Not even when all the kids in elementary school would yell with happiness when a parent brought in a cake for their kids birthday. Just never liked them.
7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
Yes!!! Well I guess if you don't really like cake......but still. I would be very disappointed if my birthday went by with a pie and no cake.
8. What's the best thing about birthday cake?

2. My husband make the BEST coconut cake.
3. Eh...Not my Favorite

6. Awful. Like them as a kid, not so much now.
7. It's your birthday, you pick the dessert...
8. Not feeling guilty about eating the majority of it all by yourself
Happy Birthday, Cakespy!
1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? A doll cake. The doll had a pink tulle skirt, I can't remember the cake! The other was a gingerbread man cake with candy decorations. That cake was usually a wacky spice cake.
2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? I've been eying the chocolate brownie layer cake in the Baking with Julia cookbook!
3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain) Hm. I've used this frosting on my dad's birthday cake a few years ago, but I thought it was too pedestrian, plus it was just sweetened whipped cream, rather "meh" for a cake frosting.
4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? No! But I use my fingers to extinguish the flames!
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? It largely depends on the flavor scheme of the cake. Mocha with pineapple? Eh.
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? An Oreo ice cream cake, I love it!
7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? I don't think so. If people don't like cake, let them eat pie!
8. What's the best thing about birthday cake? The thought and time that went into making it, and the joy it gives.
1. Grocery store-bought...usually vanilla on vanilla.
2. Lemon cake with an iced tea buttercream filling with pink lemonade on top (from RETRO BAKERY, of course!)

7. Not if you totally dig pie. It's your birthday and you can pie if you want to... pie if you want to...
8. the sugar rush
1, What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
Chocolate cake with chocolate icing. Size and shape were irrelevant. I was going for the ultimate choco experience. A chocolate fork to eat it with would have been perfect.
2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
The kind with lots of chocolate and no calories.
3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
Yes and no. Yes, if no buttercream is available. No, if the reverse is true.
4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
Yes; sometimes in the middle of the night.
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
Fruit filling is a downer. Reminds me I should be eating fruit.
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
Ice cream cakes that are more cake than ice cream are awesome. Ice cream cakes that are Carvel are doubly so. Awful would describe an all vanilla ice cream cake with fruit in the middle. In high school, I had the honor of crafting Mickey Mouse and Goofy cakes for our local Carvel. Oh my; tricky stuff. Fudgie the Whale was no cake walk, either.
7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
Yes.
8. What's the best thing about birthday cake?
It's made with love.
