A Very Special Cake Poll and Giveaway: It's Cakespy's Birthday!
Thursday, July 31, 2008
Do you remember the day you were born, Cakespy? After all, it was one year ago--on August 1----that we made our inaugural post. How the time has gone! In some ways we can't believe it's been a year, and yet at the same time, it seems inconceivable that it's only been a year. One sugar-filled, dentist's nightmare of a year.
While we could regale you with the story of Cakespy's birth, we thought it would be much funner to have a poll and give away some sweet stuff! In keeping with the birthday theme, our subject is birthday cake. And since it's a special day, there will be not one but four winners!
- Winner 1 will get the original painting shown at the top;
- Winner 2 will get a Cakespy T-Shirt (Unisex sizes XS-L, winner will be notified and asked for a size; no need to put it in your response);
- Winners 3 and 4 will receive a box of 10 assorted Cakespy Notecards!
The fine print: The poll will be closed at 12 noon PST on Wednesday, August 6th; responses may be posted in the comments section or emailed to jessieoleson@gmail.com. As usual, winners will be chosen at random, and will be assigned prizes in the order mentioned above (sorry, no swapping). Entries from the US and beyond are welcome. Your info will never be shared and these questions are solely motivated by our nosy spy tendencies.

1. I BEGGED for Funfetti boxed cake, because what little kid isn't super-attracted to that little Pillsbury Dough Boy? Usually ended up with yellow cake with chocolate icing.
2. Lemon-blueberry cake.
3. Big NO on the whipped cream. UGH. I will, however, settle for a nice sugar coma-inducing icing.
4. Guilty as charged!
5. Depends on the filling. I'm a sucker for lemon-filled, but raspberry is a big no-no.
6. Until I became allergic to milk, I loved those awful Carvel ice cream cakes.
7. As long as it's sweet, you can't go wrong!
8. It's sweet, indulgent, and on fire (literally, one time)!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAKESPY! :)
1. I think I had the usual boxed white cake as a kid, but I always loved it!
2. For my next birthday I want a dark chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling and ganache.

4. I don't lick the candles.
5. I've only once had a really good fruit filling.
6. Ice cream cakes are pretty awesome, it's ice cream, how could it be awful?

Happy birthday! I didn't know your blog was so young.
This is the best poll ever!
1- My mother always made me wonderfully intricate cakes. I remember one shaped like a train and I think the cars had candy in them.
2-I have been jonesing for the classic yellow cake with chocolate icing.
3-Whipped cream YESYESYES
4-No...too waxy.
5-If it's fresh fruit, then great. Especially berries.
6-Pretty awesome, but I find men are especially keen on them.
7-Wrong for me, but I don't judge.
8-That it's cake! And that you have license to overindulge.
Happy birthday to you!!!!
What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? Whatever I asked for, usually chocolate w/chocolate icing; however, once my mom took Wilton cake decorating classes, I always wanted her to decorate a Barbie doll cake for me every year!
What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? Carrot is what I usually ask for now.
Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain) I love whipped cream icing! Not as much as buttercream or cream cheese icing; but I still love it! Let's face it, I love ALL icing!
Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? I used to but now my kids beat me to it! LOL
Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? Depends on the filling but most of the time, a sweet surprise!
Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?I'm not wild about 'em so I'll go with awful.
Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? My husband prefers apple pie for his birthday instead of cake - so, no, it's not wrong.
What's the best thing about birthday cake? That it is CAKE! I {heart} cake!!!!
What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
A yellow cake with chocolate frosting...always:)
What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? My birthday was just a couple of days ago and I had the DB'r challenge cake as my b-day cake! My sis made it for me:)

Yes on some cakes especially any cake with fruit-strawberries for instance.

Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
mmeh I could take it or leave it.
Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
Hey whatever floats your boat:)
What's the best thing about
birthday cake?
FROSTING!!
1. Hmm well the first cake I ever had was a chocolate teddy cake, which I can barely even remember but I've seen the pictures and boy did it look yummy!
2.Hmm Im not sure, I think just a jam and buttercream cake but heavily frosted and decorated with chocolate and sweets mmm.
3. No, not really my thing I'm more traditional I just like buttercream for my birthday cake.
4.No I've never actually done that haha!
5.Nahh no fruit filling in a cake, it usually makes the sponge soggy, which is a big no no!
6.I cant believe this...but I've never actually had one..but I can imagine it would make the sponge all horrible and hard.
7. Yes very, it has to be a cake!
8. The smell after blowing out your candles and then cutting yourself a big slice. Yum.
What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? All of our cakes were home baked. I remember one was a light blue square layer cake with Care Bears piped onto the top and sides! Oddly enough, I got mostly My Little Ponies toys that year, not care bears.
What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? Chocolate cream cake! With chocolate shavings around the edge!
Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain) Yes yes yes! I love me a cream cake! I love the "bettercreme" frosting which is a disgusting yet so delicious non-dairy whipped frosting with all sorts of gross stuff in it like palm kernel oil, HFCS, thickeners and emulsifiers. But it's so tasty!
Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? No because I hate the wax taste. And it your tooth scrapes a candle, that gross little shaving of wax that's all chalky and gross in your mouth=nasty.
Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
I'm not big on fruit in my cake.
Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
Ice cream cakes that include cake in them are great! The just ice cream cakes are lame. That's not a cake! It's a sundae shaped like a cake!
Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
Not if you're a 65 year old man. It seems like the older men in my family like pies more than cake, especially fruit pies. But it would be dead wrong for an 8 year old. Need cake!!
What's the best thing about birthday cake? The frosting! I am a frosting not! Maybe I'd be fine with just a birthday bowl-of-frosting!
1. White cake with white icing...and no sprinkles...I hate sprinkles!
2. White cake with lemon cird filling and a light buttercream
3. No, the thicker and creamier the better!
4. I'll admit, a wonderful guilty pleasure.
5. Most of the time, a sweet surprise
6. Eh, not my favorite
7. Wrong, unless it's key lime pie!
8. Cake for breakfast the next morning!

7. It's your birthday, eat what you want! As a January baby, it was rarely a great option though.
8. The attention of having it in front of you!

3. YES!
4. nope
5. Usually a sweet surprise, unless it's cherry-yuk

Happy Birthday, Cakespy! You picked a great day to launch--Aug. 1 is my birthday too!
1. Usually something homemade by Grandma, which was the best. I think it always involved chocolate.
2. I don't know if I'll be having cake today (I think there's blackberry cobbler in my future). Last night my boyfriend and I split chocolate peanut butter and PB&J cupcakes from Trophy. Yum!
3. Yes please! My grandma used to mix chocolate frosting mix into heavy cream, refrigerate it overnight, then whip it to frost a chocolate cake. Awesome.
4. Of course! Why waste good frosting?
5. Definitely a good thing, especially if it's fresh fruit.
6. Awesome.
7. Pie is never wrong--except when it's mince rhubarb.
8. I think it's a proven fact that birthday cake has no calories, especially when it's your own!
1) "Exploding Dinosaur Cake" or some other exotic concoction from my mom.
2) Coca-cola cake
3) Yes, of course. Any kind of frosting is good... except for fake frosting that you can't eat.
4) See above answer.
5) Not for everything, but with a deep chocolate cake, an oh-so-tasty raspberry surprise in the middle, bring me another slice!
6) Homemade = yummy. Storebought = crapshoot
7) Not if it's Boston Cream Pie.
8) That someone somewhere every day is enjoying some!
1) The best would probably have to be a kitty cat my mama made for me when I was turning 4 or so. I have a picture somewhere at home, and it's the best cake I ever had.
2) Lemon-tower cake. Except I'll probably have to make it myself, which is a bummer.
3) On certain cakes; angel food, for example, does best with a light frosting like whipped cream, or a glaze.
4) Yessir. Why on earth not? More frosting!!!
5) More often than not, I find, a disappointment in the middle - fruit filling can lead to sogginess - sogginess can lead to sad.
6) Generally speaking, awesome.
7) Why not? Pie is pretty superb.
8) It's made with YOU in mind, YOU get to pick the cake you want (at least in my family) and 98% of the time, you get it exactly the way you wanted it!
Happy Birthday Cakespy!!!
1) Usually white cake with vanilla buttercream, with a picture of my favorite cartoon character. (Ariel!)
2) Doberge cake by default, but I won't know until it's closer!
3) Actual whipped cream? Yes. That whipped frosting you get on grocery store cakes? No, no. And NO.
4) I used to, but a few years ago I got some wax. So, not anymore.
5) A disappointment. In fact, grocery store cake with fruit filling and whipped frosting is my definition of an inedible cake.
6) Awesome, clearly.
7) Perfectly acceptable -- it's your birthday, you can have whatever you want! (I'm now picturing two pies, layered and covered with frosting. Pie-Cake anyone? No?)
8) Eating the leftovers just before midnight, in the last few minutes of your birthday, when calories still don't count.
Happy Birthday, Cakespy! I love you! :) :)
What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? My mom made all my cakes. I got to customize every cake I had. My most memorable cake was for my 6th birthday. It was a 2-tiered cake with different kinds of candy in all colors of the rainbow. She had to drive to 3 cake supplies stores to get all the candy. It was the best cake I ever had!
What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? My next birthday is Friday (Aug 8)! I'm gonna make a banana split cake for myself!
Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain) Real whipped cream as frosting = YES! Cool Whip = I won't lie, I could eat it with a spoon! So yes, as well.
Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? I definitely have. Who doesn't do that?
Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
I like it if it's fresh fruit or homemade filling, but I don't like sweet jams and preserves in between cake layers.
Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? With chocolate cookie crust???? AWESOME!!!
Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? Heck no. Birthday pie, cake, meatloaf. If you stick candles in it, it will suffice!

1. My favorite was a choo-choo train cake.
2. Yellow cake, chocolate frosting.
3. Why not?
