A Very Special Cake Poll and Giveaway: It's Cakespy's Birthday!

It's giveaway time!
Do you remember the day you were born, Cakespy? After all, it was one year ago--on August 1----that we made our inaugural post. How the time has gone! In some ways we can't believe it's been a year, and yet at the same time, it seems inconceivable that it's only been a year. One sugar-filled, dentist's nightmare of a year.

While we could regale you with the story of Cakespy's birth, we thought it would be much funner to have a poll and give away some sweet stuff! In keeping with the birthday theme, our subject is birthday cake. And since it's a special day, there will be not one but four winners!
  • Winner 1 will get the original painting shown at the top;
  • Winner 2 will get a Cakespy T-Shirt (Unisex sizes XS-L, winner will be notified and asked for a size; no need to put it in your response);
  • Winners 3 and 4 will receive a box of 10 assorted Cakespy Notecards!
The fine print: The poll will be closed at 12 noon PST on Wednesday, August 6th; responses may be posted in the comments section or emailed to jessieoleson@gmail.com. As usual, winners will be chosen at random, and will be assigned prizes in the order mentioned above (sorry, no swapping). Entries from the US and beyond are welcome. Your info will never be shared and these questions are solely motivated by our nosy spy tendencies.
Cake Poll: Birthday Cake!
  1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
  2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
  3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
  4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
  5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
  6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
  7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
  8. What's the best thing about birthday cake?

Please note--the poll is CLOSED!

1.What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
No cake for me- always blackberry pie made by my granny

2.What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
A turn-back-time-cake?

3.Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
Yes- not a buttercream fan.

4.Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
No....ick.

5.Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
Depends on if it's really fruit or brightly colored corn syrup from a can

6.Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
AWESOME- can we leave out the cake?

7.Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
ABSOLUTELY NOT!

8.What's the best thing about birthday cake?
Usually, someone made it for me. I find that to be very special : )

1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? My mom ALWAYS made our cakes, we never had store bought. It was always a boxed mix (chocolate) and her home made 'Gravy Frosting' with some Cocoa mixed in. Still the best!
2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? Hmm, as my birthday is 5 days after christmas (and one day after my DSS) I usually opt out of cake for my birthday and go for something like Creme Brule.
3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? Only on Angel food cake with macerated strawberries on the side!
4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? Used to, now my 3 year old girl does it.
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? Ick. Fruit is healthy food. Belongs in pies or raw. Not cake!
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? Disgusting!
7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? See #2. And my husband would rather have a bourbon pecan pie over cake for his birthday any day.
8. What's the best thing about birthday cake? 2 things: Sharing it with loved ones celebrating a special day; eating leftovers!

What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
I ALWAYS asked for Red Velvet cake..it is my favorite! My mom would dip string into liquid dyes and make plaid on the top of the cake..it was awesome!

What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? I share a birthday with my middle son, so I usually let him choose...I love red velvet though..and my triple vanilla brown butter cake...Mmmmm.

Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? Well yeah! The only frosting I don't like is the stuff made with crisco...yeachhhh.
Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: Well duh! You don't want to waste do you???

Fruit filling: It depends on the cake...I try not to discriminate..it can be a very nice surprise.

Ice cream cakes: I don't think it is really awesome or aweful. I have never had a homemade one so I supose the verdict is still out. Tartelette says that her favorite dessert is a Meringue and icecream cake, I might have to get a recipe and try that!
Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
Absolutely not! There are those freaks out there who do not LOVE cake like we do (my hubby???!!!) so they should have their sweets too!

What's the best thing about birthday cake? Uhhhhhhmmmm...eating it? No really, I think it is just the knowledge that someone has taken the time to think about you and give you a sweet gift to let you know they appreciate you and love you. Seriously.

181 comments so far! WOW! Get 'em Cakespy!
- Cherry Chocolate, still my favorite now. MMMMMMMM
- Cherry Chocolate, in cupcake form!
-YES! Less heavy than real frosting, delish!
-Well, yeah! How could you waste those nummy nibbles!
-Sweet, sweet surprise
-The were awesome til I started being intolerant of icecream. :-(
-Its your birthday, you should have whatever you want...even if it is birthday meatloaf!
-Leftovers, and the presents that come with it.

1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?

Chocolate on chocolate, in the shape of a horse.

2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?

I have three go-to cakes; I'll make up my mind when it gets closer. The contenders are a flourless chocolate cake with a meringue topping, my super-fabulous chocolate BBQ cake, or an Amish "chop suey" cake with pineapples and cream cheese frosting.

3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)

No. I've just never understood the appeal of whipped cream. Except in trifles.

4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?

No. And that's surprising. I wonder why not?

5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?

REAL fruit filling? Sweet surprise. Fruit-approximating sugary filling? Ick.

6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?

Um, awesome.

7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?

Yes. Pie just doesn't do it for me.

8. What's the best thing about birthday cake?

You get to have it for breakfast the next day, too.

-What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
hmm..it varied usually..but I did have the CUSTEST barbie doll cake for one of my birthdays...you know, the one that has the doll in it, then her dress is made out of cake...SO COOL
-What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
something colorful for sure...I'm crazy for bright colors and sprinkles...but flavor wise, probably red velvet, or chocolate.
-Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
no brainer!...HECK YESSS...give me as much frosting as possible!
-Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
of course!..who doesn't??
-Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
depends on what i'm in the mood for...if I want something a little more decadent, fruit's not the best way to go...but if i'm not...fruit's fine.
-Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
AWESOME!..I LOVE ice cream..sooo ice cream+cake= amazzzzingness!
-Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
I don't think so...i'd prefer a nice big cake for my birthday, personally...and a pie might be a little harder to stick candles into... ;D
-What's the best thing about birthday cake?
EATING IT!..and having it be presented to you, in song!..haha

**I've never entered one of these before...i'm excited to see who wins!!
<33

What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
Chocolate! I was a kid, is there any other?

What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? Red velvet! I've never made a red velvet cake. The horror!

Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? No, I have a sweet tooth that whip cream frosting doesn't satisfy.

Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? Of course, dont you?

Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
It can be a sweet surprise depending on the cake. Remember the Dorie's perfect party cake? It was a sweet surprise, yes?

Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? If they are home made, it is awesome! But I dont care for the store bought king.

Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? It's your birthday, if thats what you want. But in my house, it's a no go!

What's the best thing about birthday cake? The frosting!!!

1. Whatever wonderful creation my Aunt B decorated for me! (Kermit, Strawberry Shortcake, Merry-Go-Round...)
2. Vanilla with Vanilla Buttercream icing (american buttercream)
3. Yes, but only the homemade kind. Not a fan of the grocery store oily kind.
4. of course
5. It depends. Our wedding cake had a raspberry/amaretto buttercream frosting and it was phenomenal.
6. Fantastic. But only the Carvel ones.
7. yes.
8. Everything.

August 3 | Unregistered CommenterK8teebug

1. We always had grocery store cakes.
2. I want an ice cream cake on my next birthday.
3. Yes to whipped cream frosting
4. It's been years since I had candles on my cake but I licked them when I was little.
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise
6. Ice crean cakes: awesome
7. It's fine to have birthday pie. Hmm, I might have to do that this year.
8. The best thing about birthday cake is someone taking the time to make it for me.

August 3 | Unregistered CommenterPatty

1. Usually chocolate, sometimes I was disappointed with vanilla - but they were always fancy (mom was friends with a cake decorator)!
2. Either chocolate or cherry-chip. And no, mixing the two is NOT an option.
3. Whipped cream frosting only if fresh berries are a cake component.
4. Ew - waxy icing! Ruins the flavour for the rest of the cake, I become convinced I can taste wax from there on. So, umm, no.
5. Meh. Could go either way but generally I only like fruit with cake if it's fresh, not baked in.
6. Ice cream cake = awesome. mmm...
7. Birthday pie is totally legit. The men in my life are big fans of the birthday pie!
8. The happiness and celebration that surrounds the cake totally nullifies any associated guilt with eating massive quantities of the stuff. Birthday cake is just all around awesome!

August 3 | Unregistered Commenterpointpixie

1. My mom always did something new each year that was geared to our interests; I had a panda "cut-up cake" with tinted coconut for its colors; a doll cake (of course!), a beautiful piano cake with scrolls of icing and fancy legs, and the top propped open...my mom is a champion cake maker and decorator! Almost always it was chocolate cake inside.
2. Fudge cake (chocolate batter with a little cream of tartar for texture) with vanilla buttercream.
3. Yes! My grandma made a "lily" cake that was a marble of angel food and angel food with an egg yolk in it, and it has to have either whipped cream or boiled icing.
4. Not anymore. I have 7 nieces and nephews and so allow them the pleasure!
5. Mostly a big no for me, but I did have a cake with a filling of lemon curd and whole raspberries that was amazing!
6. I prefer my cake and ice cream separate, except in the case of an ice cream sandwich (yum).
7. Absolutely not! the birthday person should have their favorite dessert. My grandpa always had a blackberry pie.
8. That moment of lighting and singing brings together the people you love, and while they sing you get a chance to gaze upon all of them and be grateful! Better than a wish.

August 3 | Unregistered CommenterEllen W

1)My mom always made the best cakes for our birthdays. She would spend what I remember being hours in the kitchen decorating them. They were different every year...princess in a castle, strawberry shortcake, donald duck, etc.

2)Something to do with chocolate and pistachios.

3)It totally depends on the cake itself. A super heavy cake can benifit from a light icing, but fluffy cake begs for rich heavy icing.

4)Yes.

5)If it's good fruit, it's good filling. Please no shitty canned pie filling.

6)I thought ice cream cakes from Baskin Robbins were God's Gift when I was a kid, but haven't had one in years. Based on my nostalgia, I'm saying awesome.

7)No. Some people prefer pie...go figure.

8)If you eat the majority of it, no one can complain, because it's your frickin cake!

August 3 | Unregistered CommenterJenny Wren

What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? I usually asked for a different kind of cake every year. One of my favorites was chocolate cake with butterfinger frosting. yummm

What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? I'm thinking I'll probably go with a carrot cake.

Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain) Usually no. I much prefer a thick, rich frosting.

Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? Yesss. I'm a frosting girl. :)

Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? Yum, I love a fruity filling!

Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? Awesome!

Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? Not at all. My mom has snickers pie every year and it's heavenly.

What's the best thing about birthday cake? The frosting!

2. I want a store bought cake with tons of icing!!! (I am currently gluten free so its killing me to not be able to do store bought)
3. Enh, I will eat it cuz its frosting. But I prefer something different.
4. Hell yeh! Other peoples candles too!
5. Depends on the fruit-- usually I am a no-go on it. Give me cake!
6. AWFUL! I hate ice cream cake!
7. If it were a chess pie that came out before the cake, then ok.
8. Leftovers! To eat all day long for the next few days!

1. Fruity cakes - basically a sponge cake with fruits and cream on top!

2. Tiramisu on a pie base, with lots of chocolate on top. Any cakes that combine all my favourite ingredients will do.

3. YES!

4. Eeek... No. Consider the carbon from the wick! =P

5. I love fruits, but chocolate even more!

6. Awful. Birthday cakes and ice cream do not go together - unless it's a chocolate mud cake.

7. Nope - Love pies!

8. It's heavenly! I love anything baked!!

Thanks,

1. Also a doll cake, with the Barbie top.
2. Anything from my favorite local bakery.
3. It's rich yet light; I like it, but not necessarily any more than a good buttercream.
4. Who doesn't?
5. I like a fruit cream filling, but not straight fruit.
6. Depends ... can be a good indulgence, depending on where you get it.
7. I like pie as much as the next person, but it's more for holidays around here ...
8. Whether it's a sheet cake from a bakery or your favorite cake that your mom makes, it's made especially for you on your special day.

Mom always made my cakes, usually marble. She did elaborate decorations with sugars & frostings.

Red velvet or german chocolate for my next birthday!

No whipped cream frosting. Too airy, doesn't enhance the cake.
Of course I lick the bottom of the candles! And I flick around the base of the cake w/ my little finger!

Fruit filling:depends on the fruit!
Ice cream cakes: OK

I guess birthday pie is OK.

The layers are the best part of BD cake!

1. I would have whatever I asked for that year. Most memorable would have to be the Rainbow Brite white cake. :)

2. I want a Peanut Butter and Honey cake made from my fav cupcake bakery.

3. Nope - Just not a fan.

4. You bet I lick it! It is usually a fight in my house as to who gets to do it!

5. BIG disappointment!

6. Awful - it is frozen which = hard plus it is dry.

7. You need a cake.

8. It is yummy in almost any form.

August 3 | Unregistered CommenterLexy

1. white cake with cream cheese forsting and little orange carrots (but not carrot cake).

2. carrot cake!

3. The only time I've ever liked w.c. frosting is when it has been on my mom's lady finger, vanilla wafer, regerigerator cake. yum.

4. How could I not?

5. Always a dissapointment :(

6. Vegan ice cream cakes only- delicious!

7. Not wrong at all, infact I think in the summer it's nearly a must.

8. the candles and generally the special just-for-youness of the cake. Like if you wanted to you could not let anyone else have any.

August 3 | Unregistered Commenterelizabeth

1. Kitty cake! Yes, it's infamous. I begged for it for every birthday I had. Two 9-inch rounds, one makes the body, the other is cut into a head, tail and ears. Decorated with frosting and coconut for the "fur" and candy for the face. LOVE!

2.One I don't have to make myself would be great. :)

3. Yes love it! Especially good with any fresh fruit. Not so good the day after, though. haha.

4. Sure, that and just sticking my finger through the icing on the cake to get some more. My sister and I COMPLETELY ruined one of my mom's birthday cakes that way! She walked away to find some candles...my sister took a finger swig of icing, so I did, she took more, so I did. We ended up in a frosting showdown and ate ALL the icing off that cake for my mom to return, shocked! Hahaha.

5. I LOVE fruit! Love it. Too sweet fruit preserves on teh other hand? Hell to the no!

6. Depends on who makes it. I love a good ice cream cake. A frozen solid, freezer burned, grocery store concoction? No, thanks. I'll pass.

7. No way! But I am baised because I make three to four pies for my little sister for every birthday party she has. She loves dutch apple pie with caramel drizzle. And who am I to dissapoint? :)

8. Um, hellllo!! The presents get opened afterwards!!

1) All differnt kinds but all had some kind of chocolate on/in it.

2)I would like a nice moist chocolate cake.

3)Yes I love anything with whipped cream

4) I suck the frosting from the bottom not lick it...so I guess that is a yes for me.

5) For me it is a disappointment in the middle unless it is done right.

6) Ice cream cakes are awesome!!!

7) It just isn't the same but why not just have both instead of picking just one.

8) It is the one time of your that you can eat a nice big slice of cake and not feel gulity about doing it! it is also fun having a bunch of people sing just to you.

August 4 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

1. I always had a chocolate cake-yum. If i was lucky it would be double chocolate of some sort!

2. I would like a chocolate cake with creamcheese frosting. :) I guess not much has changed.

3. I do prefer whipped cream frosting rather than buttercream, but creamcheese- YUM! and yes i lick the candles clean!

4.Omg. Yes, yes and YES!!! Fruit is an amazing surprise as long as it is not banana. And ice cream cake is to die for! As long as there is actual cake in there too. I don't like just ice cream.

5. I would say yes! Pie is just not the same. I would say cupcakes are an alright substitution, but pie doesn't have that scrumptious birthday flavor!

6. The way the frosting and cake squish in your mouth. YUM!

Great, thanks for making me want cake! :P
