A Very Special Cake Poll and Giveaway: It's Cakespy's Birthday!

Do you remember the day you were born, Cakespy? After all, it was one year ago--on August 1----that we made our inaugural post. How the time has gone! In some ways we can't believe it's been a year, and yet at the same time, it seems inconceivable that it's only been a year. One sugar-filled, dentist's nightmare of a year.
While we could regale you with the story of Cakespy's birth, we thought it would be much funner to have a poll and give away some sweet stuff! In keeping with the birthday theme, our subject is birthday cake. And since it's a special day, there will be not one but four winners!
- Winner 1 will get the original painting shown at the top;
- Winner 2 will get a Cakespy T-Shirt (Unisex sizes XS-L, winner will be notified and asked for a size; no need to put it in your response);
- Winners 3 and 4 will receive a box of 10 assorted Cakespy Notecards!
The fine print: The poll will be closed at 12 noon PST on Wednesday, August 6th; responses may be posted in the comments section or emailed to jessieoleson@gmail.com. As usual, winners will be chosen at random, and will be assigned prizes in the order mentioned above (sorry, no swapping). Entries from the US and beyond are welcome. Your info will never be shared and these questions are solely motivated by our nosy spy tendencies.
Cake Poll: Birthday Cake!
- What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?

- Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?

1. Yellow cake was my fav.
2. Probably a yellow cake!
3. Naw. I like a little more substance to my frosting.
4. Of course!
5. Depends on the fruit but usually yes.
6. Awesomeness!
7. I had a pie this year (last week) and it was just fine.
8. It tastes so much better than regular cake!
1. My mom's friends brought some carrot cake, the frosting of which was composed of cream cheese mixed with maple syrup. Normally I hated cream cheese, but I loved it!
2. Chocolate cheesecake. It's only a few weeks away...
3. Whipped cream frosting: it's a supermarket shortcut. Nobody who really loves you would put whipped cream frosting on your special cake!
4. When I can get away with it!
5. Fruit filling: YES! No matter what type it is, bring it on!
6. Ice cream cakes: only from Ben & Jerry's!
7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? NO! Pies are easier to make when you're pressed for time and less fatty in case your friends are on a diet!!!1!!11
8. The cake is an accessory. The best thing about it, thusly, is what surrounds it; kayaking expeditions, balloons, unwrapping gift certificates to your pet bookstore, hugs from everybody...a good birthday makes the cake taste great no matter what kind it is.
1. Chocolate with chocolate frosting
2. Something with cheesecake in it! And of course, chocolate.
3. Yes please!
4. Yep :)
5. Depends if it is fresh fruit or not. I've had some pretty disappointing, mushy fruit fillings before - no good.
6. Awesome! Especially if it's cookies and cream.
7. It's not wrong...just not for me.
8. The wish!
1. My favourite birthday cake I had as a child was my "Panda Cake", it was made in the shape of a panda sitting on it's rump, and frosted to look like said panda. Just adorable!
2. I'm going back and forth between a Tres Leches cake, and some sort of a fruit tart.
3. Yes, I prefer whipped cream to the commercial "butter cream frosting" that gets put on lots of cakes these days.
4. Yes, I have always licked off the candles.
5. Fruit? Yes, I love fruit filling in my cakes. Not so fond of the jam because that's too sweet, but I love fresh fruit.
6. Depends on the ice cream cake. There's an ice cream shop in the town I grew up in that their "cakes" are all ice cream, and it's homemade, small batch, organic deliciousness. That is the perfect ice cream cake!
7. Nah, it's your birthday, you get the dessert that you want! My husband always wants cheesecake, my dad loves his cherry pies...It's a matter of individual taste.
8. Best thing about birthday cake is that it's usually a gift! It's something that was chosen for you to enjoy!
1. Yellow cake with chocolate frosting, usually. From a box. :x
2. Death-by-chocolate =D
3. Yes...sometimes, it's a refreshing, light touch to a dense cake structure. But I prefer buttercream.
4. Yes! It's one of the joys of being the BirthdayChick!
5. If the fruit is fresh, it's awesome. If it's canned...mmm, probably not so much. Frozen fruit doesn't seem to thaw well, so a definite no-go with that.
6. Without freezer burn, ice cream cakes can be awesome. I prefer to have a regular cake with ice cream on the side, though...that way you get more of each.
7. It's not wrong at all. When I turned 18, I happened to be in Japan on military training and the women I was bunking with handcarried a lemon meringue pie from the nearest town onto the base for me as a surprise. It was one of the best "birthday cakes" I ever had!
8. The best part of a birthday cake is sharing it with your friends...then eating the leftovers later on by yourself!
1. I don't remember my mom baking much. So it was usually a grocery store cake - white on white with pink roses.
2. La Bete Noire from Extraordinary Desserts in San Diego. http://www.extraordinarydesserts.com/images/desserts/wholecakes/laBeteNoir.htm
3. Yes.
4. Definitely! I can't resist.
5. Sweet surprise, yum. Esp fresh fruit that is still a bit tart.
6. Not my fav.
7. No way is it wrong!
7. That everyone indulges in a little birthday cake.
What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? Chocolate
What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? German chocolate with coconut pecan icing
Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)yes
Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? yes - of course - why waste that wonderful frosting!
Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? It depends on the cake, I love white cake with strawberries in the middle
Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?Awesome - what's not to love? It's a cake, it's ice cream. Win-win!
Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake? No, I alwayws make a pie for my oldest son since (oh the horror of it) he doesn't like cake
What's the best thing about birthday cake? Sneaking back later to eat more... and more... and more... and... well, you get the picture!
1. Vanilla with neon frosting
2. I want to make cupcakes.
3. Never say never to frosting
4. Licker
5. Sweet
6. Awesome, unless I make it...then awful
7. Hmm...wrong along, but with cake, sure!
8. The extra frosting on stuck on the plate for later.

What's the best thing about birthday cake? The candles.
And I think I should win. My second birthday is the 31st. I posted a story about it.
Yay -- my first post is a contest post! Woohoo!
1- It varied, sometimes they were store bought, most often my mother made them (from scratch, even). Once or twice they were the cake provided by McD's when they USED to have a decent Birthday party package - the most memorable was my 7th, yellow cake, purple icing, Miss Piggy Cake complete with HUGE frosting BOOBIES! LOL
2 - I'm dying to try the Chocolate Mud cake recipe I found. Hopefully in a funky purse shape, and probably made by moi.
3- Absolutely NOT! Whipped cream is great for strawberries, but cake icing should be buttercream icing!
4- Of course I do... and the kids fight over them when it's their cake! LOL
5- Well... I used to think this was a HUGE no-no. Fruit is not dessert. However, I recently had strawberry filling in a french vanilla cake- OH SO Yum
6- Eh, not my thing. I prefer a nice slice of cake and a scoop of ice cream in a flavor to compliment the cake.
7- Wrong? Not wrong exactly, but kind of odd.
8- Oh, this is tough - eating it AND sharing it with those you love!
ncredheadcutie@gmail.com

2. carrot
3. I like whipped cream on ice cream, berries, pie, by itself, why not on cake too
4. every time, even if it's not my cake
5. depends on the fruit
6. Love ice cream cake, especially the chocolate crunchies in the middle
7. My dad has had birthday pie every year for 51 years...i'm a fan of tradition...birthday pie is fine by me
8. sharing with friends and family
Lacy
1. A Burt and Ernie cake- I think more of it got ON me than IN me.
2. It's been years since I had an actual "birthday cake"---but anything chocolate and gooey will do!
3. Definitely not- whipped cream frosting results when your mom didn't have time and energy for real frosting, so she sent your dad to the store for some whipping cream.
4. I'm human, aren't I?
5. Entirely contingent on what surrounds it: fruit filling in an angel food? Bah! but fruit filling
6. Not just awesome, but superior to all others.
7. Hmmm...yummy deliciousness can never be wrong, cake, pie or otherwise.
8. Best thing about birthday cake? The one day of the year when you can eat the whole thing if you feel like it!
1. Ice cream cake...white cake with green mint chip ice cream. Heaven!
2. Ice cream cake...see the answer above!
3. Yes! Any sort of frosting will do...a cake is naked without it!
4. Yep. Unabashedly, yes. Right in front of the birthday person if I'm in charge of cutting the cake ;)
5. I've had some yummy fruit-filled cakes...white cake with raspberry filling...or lemon curd...yummmy!
6. Well, considering my answer for 1 & 2...I'd have to say super-spectacularly-awesome :)
7. It's wrong to have a birthday with no celebration...if pie is your kind of celebration, then heck ya! Go for it! Just save me a slice...
8. It makes all of your non-singing friends sing to you...can you feel the LOVE? :)
ps...Happy Birthday! I L-O-V-E your work! (I see it at Venue all the time :)
1. I remember a chocolate cake with Santa Claus and a fireplace because my birthday's Christmas Eve.
2. White cake with layers of strawberries in between and some whipped cream frosting.
3. Yes when there is fruit involved
4. Definitely, yes!
5. Only a sweet surprise if it's 6. Okay - it's a bit too cold to bite into though
7. No! I've had many a peanut butter pie for my birthday "cake"
8. Getting to eat it with your friends!
Happy Birthday "Cake Spy"!
# What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
chocolate mayonnaise cake with andies chocolate mint frosting
# What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
vanilla with white "buttercream" (vegan) with pastel sprinkles
# Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain)
whipped COCONUTCREAM frosting yes. use the solids of the coconut milk... delish
# Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
of course. it was like a TREAT on your birthday in my house that you were allowed to do that. there were fights over the candles. im telling ya.
# Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
disappointment, unless its done well. i guess i always had yucky store bought cakes with fruit that tasted like saccharine and fake. i made a black cherry jam cake and it was delicious. maybe my pallet has changed, maybe my ingredients are just better.
# Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
vegan ice cream cakes-- amazing
# Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
in my opinion, yes yes yes. my husband begs to differ. no seriously he begged for pie this year so i ended up making pie AND cake.
# What's the best thing about birthday cake?
the frosting! i love the classic white frosting with sprinkles!
1. Chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream!
2. A shaped cake I think. My Mum once made a fabulous Panda shaped cake for my Aunt's birthday when she visited us for her birthday when I was little. Perhaps I'll make a cat shaped cake! (I've had cupcakes for my birthday the past couple of years, I feel it's time for a change!)
3. No. I don't eat cream, and my mother doesn't either - I'd like to be able to eat my cake and share it!
4. Oh I so would - providing I had ever been allowed!
5. I'm not one for fruit in cakes - except for if it's a fruit cake! The only filling should be a complimentary flavoured buttercream or ganache in my opinion!
6. Awful! Cake is cake, not ice cream!
7. ...only if you really don't like cake - it's your birthday, you should be able to enjoy your birthday goodies!
8. The best thing about birthday cake is that you can have the most outrageously high-calorie cake, eat as much as you'd like and not feel any guilt at all because it's your birthday cake!
1) Always, always devils food cake (devils food cake for me, angel food cake for my sister--and yes, they matched our personalities perfectly).
2)As I've gotten older, I've grown to appreciate the simplicity of a white cake--with that heavy, artery clogging, can't have a birthday without it frosting, of course.
3) NO! Give me crisco frosting or I'll give you a big pouty face!
4)I don't do it, but now that I think about it, I should.
5)I've never had a fruit filled cake, but I'm up for a sweet surprise.
6)I used to think they were awesome but now, I'd only consider it in a heat wave.
7)YES! Next question.
8) Well, if its my birthday cake, the best thing about it is that I get first and last dibs on it--and some middle dibs too!
1. Usually a sheetcake from a local bakery.
2. Cheesecake. I know, no fun decorations, but I love cheesecake!
3. Yes - Whipped cream frosting: yes or no?
4. I used to. My son does it now.
5. Sweet surprise!
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome!
7. No, pie is never wrong. If pie is wrong, I don't wanna be right.
8. The best thing is letting my kiddos help me blow out the candles.
Happy Birthday, Cakespy!

Hi Cakespy:
1. My mom would either do a homemade or one from a real bakery- I was spoiled!
2. For my next birthday I want a cake from a real bakery- I'm not so spoiled anymore. Something from a pretty little cuppy boutique in the city (I live in suburbia)
3. No. Whip is for ice cream, not cake.
4. Do it. We don't waste frosting around here.
5. Depends. I like the lemon but really, fruit is for healthy people. I like my sugary snacks to not be laced with vitamin packing nutrients.
6. Not my favorite, I'm a traditional kind of girl, but if it was presented I surely wouldn't say no.
7. Very very wrong.
8. The best thing about birthday cake is everything, but especially how timeless it is in being the symbol of a happy birthday no matter the age of the one being celebrated.
1. Betty Crocker
2. pineapple upside down
3. yes, of course
4. no
5. it depends
6. can be awesome

8. life is sweet
I hope I win, I hope I win (finger's crossed) bc I love this stuff--SOOOOO CUTE!!!
1. Oh I have always (still am) been super picky when it came to my birthday cake. If it is home made it must be chocolate cake with frosting & if it store bought it must be white cake with white buttercream icing.
2. YUM, I made my husband a chocolate torte this year for his and it was amazing, that is what I want.
3. NO, I do not like it. I got a cake made of this a few years and would not touch it. It taste horrid as far as I am concerned with cake.
4. Yes, and its GREAT!
5. It is just not for me. I like fruit in a tart or pie but cake, ugh no.
6. AWESOME as it gets. Can I give the person who came up with this a giant hug?
7. Yes, WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!
8. Its the center of the party, its a tradition that we have and that is just what brings family and friends together.
1. My mom always ordered big cakes from bakeries, and I remember that I almost never liked them, haha. My dad's wife, on the other hand, made me pancake-cakes sometimes :) It's a cake made with layers of thin pancakes (crepes?) with jam or whipped cream in between :) yum!
2. Something chocolate-y, I think :) or maybe several small cakes so I can have all the flavors I want? :D I'm greedy.
3. I've never had it :( sounds delicious, though :D
4. No.
5.A disappointment if it's too sweet, but mostly yum yum :D
6. Awzome, I heart ice cream :D
7. No, but both is better!
8. Well, eating it of course :)
Happy b-day!
1. My favorite one was a My Little Pony cake
2. Cupcakes of course
3. YES!
4. Its a law, right?
5. Sweet surprise
6. Awesome
7. Yes
8. The frosting
