A Very Special Cake Poll and Giveaway: It's Cakespy's Birthday!
Thursday, July 31, 2008
Do you remember the day you were born, Cakespy? After all, it was one year ago--on August 1----that we made our inaugural post. How the time has gone! In some ways we can't believe it's been a year, and yet at the same time, it seems inconceivable that it's only been a year. One sugar-filled, dentist's nightmare of a year.
While we could regale you with the story of Cakespy's birth, we thought it would be much funner to have a poll and give away some sweet stuff! In keeping with the birthday theme, our subject is birthday cake. And since it's a special day, there will be not one but four winners!
- Winner 1 will get the original painting shown at the top;
- Winner 2 will get a Cakespy T-Shirt (Unisex sizes XS-L, winner will be notified and asked for a size; no need to put it in your response);
- Winners 3 and 4 will receive a box of 10 assorted Cakespy Notecards!
The fine print: The poll will be closed at 12 noon PST on Wednesday, August 6th; responses may be posted in the comments section or emailed to jessieoleson@gmail.com. As usual, winners will be chosen at random, and will be assigned prizes in the order mentioned above (sorry, no swapping). Entries from the US and beyond are welcome. Your info will never be shared and these questions are solely motivated by our nosy spy tendencies.

1.Bakery cake, usually white/yellow cake with buttercream frosting and cherry & pineapple filling between the layers.
2. Well, yesterday was my birthday, so I guess I have a whole year to think about it! At dinner out last night, four of us shared three desserts: white chocolate cake with passionfruit mousse on top, a nut pie (like pecan, but with a variety of nuts), and a chocolate volcano cake.
3. Whipped cream is fine, but buttercream is where it's at.
4. Of course; who wouldn't?!
5. Actually, I like fruit filling if it's that good fake fruit filling (like the canned pie fillings)!
6. Not as good as real cake, but I wouldn't turn it down
7. Highly unorthodox, but on your birthday you should get what you want!
8. Everything is "the best;" can you name one BAD thing about birthday cake?!
1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little?
Pepperidge Farm frozen vanilla 3-layer cake.
2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday?
Vanilla cupcakes with vanilla frosting, maybe from Teacakes Bakeshop.
3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no?
Yum.
4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it?
Of course.
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle?
You never know, but one of my favorite kinds of cupcakes are chocolate raspberry.
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful?
Eh.
7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
Go for it. I predict that pie is the new black.
8. What's the best thing about birthday cake?
Cold the next day for breakfast.
I remember having a teddy bear cake and a doll cake.
Vanilla cake with either vanilla frosting or chocolate ganache.
Buttercream is really the only frosting. Whipped cream is gross. I remember going to a bday party as a kid and being psyched about the thick frosting. Then one bite and patooey! Whipped cream. What a rip off.
Licking the candles? no Licking the beaters? yes Spoon? yes
Fruit filling is nice in wedding cakes, but not at home for bday cakes.
My boys love ice cream cakes. I only like the blizzard cakes from DQ or a choc chip cake from Baskin Robbins. Usually I'll pick cake, no ice cream.
Why would anyone choose pie over cake? really!
The best thing about MY cake - (1) the frosting and (2) I don't have to cut and serve the dang thing!

7. Anything celebrating your birth is a good thing!
8. It's cake!
Happy birthday, Cakespy!
1. Usually an animal themed cake.
2. My birthday is this Saturday, and I actually don't want a cake-I want a Key Lime Pie, piled high with meringue.
3. Hmmm....on a white cake, yes. On a chocolate one, no.
4. Yep. The wax makes it taste even better.
5.Depending on how sweet. I despise those sickeningly sweet fruit fillings...

7. Not in my book....see #2 above *grin*

1. A random box cake at my mother's discretion.
2. A chocolate, chocolate,
chocolate, chocolate, chocolate,
chocolate cake (and if I could add more chocolate, I would)!
3. Yes to the whipped cream.
4. Is there any other way to clean those darn candles?
5. A disappointment unfortunately.
6. Ice cream!!! Enough said. (awesome just in case)
7. Not wrong, just sad.

4. Usually in the kitchen where no one will see :)

4. Of course, Yummy!
5. Depends on my mood and the kind of fruit it is.
6. Awesome, see #1 answer : )

7. Is it wrong to have a birthday pie instead of a cake?
Naw, anything goes.
8. What's the best thing about birthday cake?
Making wishes, having cake fights and eating the mess.
#1-store bought, with the yucky frosting. all of them. Guess my mom was a bit burned out by the time she had me?
#2-green tea cupcakes!
#3-It can be a yes, but this time of year where I live? NONONONO! It's toooo hot.
#4-What kind of frosting wasting sicko doesn't lick it off of the candles? I don't get to, the kids get to them too quickly.
#5-Fruit filling: a sweet surprise. Fruit colored high-fructose corn syrup filling: ick no.
#6-Ice cream cakes: awesome if it's from DQ and has that amazing crunchy layer of chocolate bits and fudge. No thanks on the cakes from...other ice cream places...that are ice cream layered on frozen/soggy cakes.
#7-You're going to tell the birthday girl what she can and can't have? Good luck with that! My aunt has a birthday watermelon!
#8-Um, decorating them. No wait, the eating it. No! making everyone wait til I take the 1st bite....Scratch that! The birthday WISH! I <3 anything that's a venue for a wish!
1. Vanilla on vanilla. I was not a chocolate girl. For my 12th birthday I had a cake that looked like a hamburger, which makes for quite the iconic photo in my family now that I am vegan.
2. My birthday is next week and I have already picked out a recipe for cherry vanilla cupcakes.
3. No - whipped cream is not much of an option on a vegan cake.
4. Absolutely. Why waste good frosting?

1. The first cake I had was, like Katie, a kitty cake! My mum made it, and (for some reason) the grey fur icing turned green! So I had a green cat!! :P
Since then, she hasn't made a cake for me...we've had the store-bought ones...usually a cheesecake of some sort. Or a Black Forest Cake...yum!
2. Well, seeing as my birthday is on Sunday, I would like a strawberry cheesecake. Haven't had cheesecake in a while, so I really want one!! :)
3. Hmm..that's a hard one. I think I'll have to put my answer as...as long as it's sweet frosting that compliments the cake, I will eat it! :)
4. Nah...don't like wax-flavoured frosting! :)
5. I guess it depends on the cake in question - for example, if you're told that it's just a plain chocolate cake (no fancy fillings or anything), and find that it has fruit in it, then I'd be a bit disappointed. But if I was told that I was getting a vanilla sponge cake with whipped cream and fresh strawberries in the middle, then I'd love it! :)
6. They can be good, as long as they aren't a melted mess by the time you get a slice...that's happened to me in the past. I felt like I needed a straw in order to enjoy it!! :)
7. It's not really 'wrong'...it's just not normal! :P
8. Getting to eat it!
1. My mom didn't bake, I only remember various years with pizzas with candles. I'm sure store-bought was in there somewhere. It was a complicated childhood, trust me.
2. Frankly, if I don't have to make it myself, that would be thoughtful; hasn't happened yet. A truly kick*** red velvet would be lovely, or the moistest chocolate cake. Made myself some mad festive cupcakes this year.
3. I'm not much for the wc frosting...oh, I'll eat it, don't get me wrong, but I like the basic stuff.
4. Doesn't everyone lick the candles?
