A Very Special Cake Poll and Giveaway: It's Cakespy's Birthday!
Thursday, July 31, 2008
Do you remember the day you were born, Cakespy? After all, it was one year ago--on August 1----that we made our inaugural post. How the time has gone! In some ways we can't believe it's been a year, and yet at the same time, it seems inconceivable that it's only been a year. One sugar-filled, dentist's nightmare of a year.
While we could regale you with the story of Cakespy's birth, we thought it would be much funner to have a poll and give away some sweet stuff! In keeping with the birthday theme, our subject is birthday cake. And since it's a special day, there will be not one but four winners!
- Winner 1 will get the original painting shown at the top;
- Winner 2 will get a Cakespy T-Shirt (Unisex sizes XS-L, winner will be notified and asked for a size; no need to put it in your response);
- Winners 3 and 4 will receive a box of 10 assorted Cakespy Notecards!
The fine print: The poll will be closed at 12 noon PST on Wednesday, August 6th; responses may be posted in the comments section or emailed to jessieoleson@gmail.com. As usual, winners will be chosen at random, and will be assigned prizes in the order mentioned above (sorry, no swapping). Entries from the US and beyond are welcome. Your info will never be shared and these questions are solely motivated by our nosy spy tendencies.

Happy 1st Birthday!!!!
1. What kind of cake did you have for your birthday when you were little? - I loved ice cream cakes, even with a winter birthday.
2. What kind of cake do you want for your next birthday? - Either a chocolate chip cookie cake or a giant cupcake.
3. Whipped cream frosting: yes or no? (Feel free to explain) - Yes, I like the airy nature of it on some cakes, although sometimes it just does not work.
4. Licking the frosting from the bottom of the candles: do you do it? - No, simply not that into frosting to bother.
5. Fruit filling: a sweet surprise, or disappointment in the middle? - Sweet surprise :)
6. Ice cream cakes: awesome or awful? - See #1 ;)

8. What's the best thing about birthday cake? - Sharing it with family and friends!

2. I am so boring - but I love (really good actual) vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. If there are fresh strawberries involved, all the better.
3. No no no
4. Less licking, more sucking nearly swallowing the candles. I have no shame.
5. Fruit filling depends on the fruit and quality of said filling - fresh and lovely, super surprise!! Canned and ew - uhmm... someone hates me.
6. Ice cream cakes are great for hot summer birthdays on the back porch, otherwise just melty and messy.
7. Birthday pie works, although I love me a good birthday fruit tart too.
8. Best thing about birthday cake - the edge pieces with maximum icing effectiveness. And getting someone else to cut it b/c I'm the birthday girl dammit.

2) My birthday is in May, so I haven't started planning that far in advance, yet! It will probably be a variation on Dorie's Perfect Party Cake, though. So yummy!

5) Sweet surprise!

1. When I was little, I had some mocha flavored cakes and vanilla cakes. I'm not a fan of chocolate so I didn't really have that.
2. For my next birthday, I would love to have a cookies and cream cake (my favorite ice cream flavor!). Or something with lots of bright colored frosting on top would be nice too.
3. I don't think I've had that yet, but it sounds yummy so I would like to try that!
4. Yup, I'm guilty of doing that. It's my cake, right? :]

Yes, but to each his own ....
8 What's the best thing about birthday cake?

~Heather
1. Usually chocolate cake/chocolate icing from Harris Teeter store. But when I was 5 my grandmother made these cool ice cream cone cupcakes.
2. Probably a peanut butter-chocolate combination cake.
3. No - lacking in flavor, texture.
4. Yes, of course.
5. No fruit filling for me, thanks.
6. Can be awesome if they're high quality and the cake's not dry.
7. No - not if that's what the birthday girl/boy likes best.
8. The fact that it's once a year, so you feel like you can really treat yourself. And also the friends/family usually involved.
Cakespy, you don't look a day over 11 months! Have a happy birthday and make sure to send out lots of invitations to relatives out of state so you get presents but not have them visit.
Now for my shot at fame...
1) Some sort of frosting star covered animal. Mom had a magic pan that could make the face of anything from a bear to a panda to a koala to a... hey, wait a minute.
2) Ice cream cake with a side of jelly donuts.
3) Blegh. No. What a waste of frosting real estate. Buttercream or bust!
4) Don't stop at licking! I used to bite the candles in half and make mini-nunchucks.
5) Meh, if it's someone else's cake, fine (at least I'm getting some of it). If it's in MY cake... I'll have to use my mini-nunchucks on your face.
6) Awesome. No need to have to portion cake to ice cream so you're not stuck with just cake at the end.
7) No. Everyone probably goes through a rebellious pie phase. As long as it's not rhubarb...
8) When it's at work, usually people order a cake that's too big and then you can be the pig that takes the extra home. Dibs on the blue roses!
1. I got to pick what flavor I wanted, and my mom would make something spectacular -- my favorite was a butterfly-shaped cake when I turned 6, or the rainbow-shaped cupcakes for my 3rd b-day.
2. Hmm, it's next week, so I should get on this -- probably something chocolate with something cream cheesy on top
3. Is it wrong to say both?!?
4. Totally
5. A disappointment in the middle -- I'm also against it in doughnuts. I like fruit all on its own, not crammed in stuff.
6. Awful for me, awesome for my hubby.
7. Not if that's what you'd prefer -- it's your day, eat the dessert treat you want most!
8. That it is SO special, you only get ONE a year.
1. My favorite cake was a barbie cake that my mom made me when I was maybe 7 years old with the doll sticking out of the top.
2. My favorite cake is chocolate/white swirl cake with burnt almond frosting.
3. I love whipped cream frosting
4.Of course I lick the frosting, duh!
5. I also love fruit filling -- preferably raspberry!
6. I have to say that I hate ice cream cakes -- I would much rather eat cake than ice cream.
7. I alternate probably every other year with a birthday pie instead of a cake -- I like to mix things up a bit.
8. The best thing by far about birthday cake is the frosting and/or the fruit filling!
Thanks!!!!
1. It would range, normally a store bought cake that had the typical icing. Sometimes white, sometimes chocolate.
2. A cake. I didn't have one this year (but I did have fondue!).
3. I don't care. I like cream cheese the most, but whipped cream has all the sweet without the sickly that you get with buttercream.
4. Of COURSE.
5. I've never had, so I can't say.
6. I'm pretty laid back about cakes, I enjoy it all.
7. I don't see why it would. I had a birthday fondue this year.
8. Being the first one to get a slice.
On the chance I win, my e-mail is tara.conneally@loop.colum.edu
