Cake Poll: Let Me Eat Cake!
Thursday, April 9, 2009
Do you really love cake?
Do you love cake so much that whenever you're in the same room, you find yourself unable to resist its siren call?
Then certainly Leslie F. Miller's new book, Let Me Eat Cake, is for you. Now, let's get it straight--though the book has a few recipes, that's not what it's about--it's more about the culture of cake, its lure and the lore behind it, baked up full of personal anecdotes and cake stories galore. And--as we were surprised and delighted to discover--there's even a mention of CakeSpy.com!
And you, dear friend, could be the winner of a signed copy of the book. Oh, you want this!
To put your name in the running, simply answer this question in the comments. You can be as literal or as figurative as you like, just be sure to leave your thoughts on this important subject:
What is the best thing about cake?
The poll will be closed on Monday at 12 p.m. PST, and the winner will be announced shortly thereafter. If you're interested in purchasing the book, click here. Oh, and in case you were interested, the cupcake shown is a Chai Cardamom cupcake from Seattle's Trophy Cupcakes!

The best thing about cake? It's the perfect platform for the main event....the frosting! Without the cake, frosting would just be too much, it needs the cake to ground it and keep it humble :)
Cake, it's what's for breakfast, lunch or dinner - the next, great food group.
Thanks!
Connie
The best thing about cake is the thick, yummy frosting, the scent that fills the kitchen as its made, and eating it for breakfast the next morning!
The best thing is being able to lick the batter off of the beater, smelling the cake baking, and finally watching the moist cake cling to your fork as you savor the final bite!
The best thing about cake is how happy the presence of cake makes people. "There's cake!" is one of the best things a person can say at any party, meeting, random work day, random life day, random anything. People light up for cake, and it's worth every curse and addition of flour that covers every inch of the kitchen counter that makes you nuts while baking it.
Plus, they just taste so damn good...
the fluffy goodness... and everyone can find a flavor they like :)
It's a whole lot easier to "edge" a cake than it is to do the same to a cupcake! Seriously though, it's like the perfect food.
THe best thing about cake is...
Infinite variety.
Shape, size, flavor, flavor combos, decoration... Cake is infinite.
the best thing about cake that it always brings a smile when eating it and can also be shared with a loved one :)
the sweet cakey bake smell that wafts through the house. and the fluffy soft delectable mush in my mouth.
The best thing about cake is the sugary, buttery, floury, yumminess that gives your tongue, mouth and belly a culinary orgasm. YOW!
Cake = happiness
Enough said!
Cake just makes me happy. It reminds me of when I was a little girl and I would clap my hands with sheer delight, over the smallest of things. I love cake with frosting. I love cake without frosting. I love cake with or without ice cream. I love cake for breakfast. Yep. I love cake!
The best thing about cake...wow, what a hard question!!
I guess I love the variety of cakes - there are so many different flavours & ingredients available to make a cake with that you can NEVER get tired of cake!! I've heard people say, "Oh no, not [meatloaf, pizza..insert other food here] again,"...but I have never heard anyone say, "Oh no, not cake again!!"
The best thing about cake? How sweet and soft it tastes.
The best thing about cake is the happy feeling you get when you run that spatula of frosting over the top of each layer lavishly, knowing you'll be eating all that deliciousness very soon!
That it makes my mouth (and belly) very, very happy!
Frosting! It's all about the frosting :)
What is the best thing about cake?
That indescribable sugary high you get after eating it. Sometimes I'm not sure if I feel pleasantly full or like I'm going to vomit. But I can't keep myself away from those sugar jitters. Sweets are my life...Bring on the diabetes!
The best thing about cake? Enjoying it with friends over a cuppa. :)
The best THINGS about cake...the feelings that it brings about when you look at it, eat it, taste it, think about it...so many memories, traditions, wonderful moments...it's an icon...cake is an important part all lives...birthdays, showers, weddings, anniversaries, all kinds of celebrations and life events...OK, I could go on and on...maybe more simply put...cake = JOY!
The best thing about cake is how a perfect cake settles into our memories. For years, for my sister's and my birthdays, my grandmother would bake a two-layer strawberry cake. The family still reminisces fondly about the fantastic summer strawberry cake. And when I think about cake, it's the first one to come to mind, always.
Hmm, the best thing about cake... that is a hard one. It could be its moist crumbly body that seems to hug your insides while you are eating or the icing that comes with it that is sweet and creamy.
But I will have to agree with another commenter when they said its the memories that it evokes. Each cake has its own memory, tres leches will always remind me of my sweet sixteen. Marble cake will remind me of the many elementary school parties I had where one friend didn't like chocolate, so we always had to get both chocolate and vanilla.
The best thing about cake is the way it impacts people. It brings people together, it can lift you up if you're feeling down, it'll take that totally awesome day you're having and make it that much better.
What is the best thing about cake?
Moist, gooey sweetness in a square! The density and moisture of a perfectly-created cake is an experience beyond mere words. Paired with a whipped frosting or a hard candy shell--how can anyone get enough! But the cake itself...the cake itself...the texture lures you to cast away the frosting and simply enjoy...
The best thing about cake...is that it exists.
There, I think I've covered everything.
