Sweet Art: Shaky for Illustration Friday

This week's Illustration Friday theme is Shaky, which got me thinking about the strained relationships between other baked goods and trendy cupcakes. How do other sweets feel about the little cakes' popularity?

Could Cuppie be on shaky ground with these tough cookies?

Update: Reader Response! Meaghan of The Decorated Cookie and Edible Crafts has made a sweet commentary on the issue of cupcakes' popularity! Read about it here.

Sweet Art: Worn for Illustration Friday

Illustration Friday: Worn
This week's Illustration Friday theme is Worn, which got me wondering: when Cuppie gets worn out, what inhabits his sweet little dreams?

Now, you can analyze this dream however you like, but you can't deny the sweetness: Cuppie dreams of cake!

Sweet Art: Drifting for Illustration Friday

Illustration Friday: Drifting
This week's Illustration Friday theme is Drifting, and I don't know what it says about me, but the first thing I thought was: Shark Attack! Maybe I've just seen Jaws(as well as Jaws 2, 3 and yes, even 4) too many times.

So, here's a sweet little reminder to let yourself drift away on occasion...but not too far.

Sweet Art: Craving for Illustration Friday

Cuppie at Ray's on 6th Ave., NYC
This week's Illustration Friday theme is Craving, which seemed very appropriate as I just returned from NYC, where I was able to indulge in my ultimate cravings: cupcakes (from Butter Lane, Sweet Revenge, Chikalicious, Cupcake Cafe...and more) and of course, an enormous and delicious slice from my favorite pizza place, Ray's on 6th Ave. and 11th Street. And so to celebrate this gratification, it seemed apt to submit this illustration of Cuppie enjoying a slice. Cupcakes and pizza, what could be better?

Sweet Art: Adapt for Illustration Friday

Adapt for Illustration Friday
What do cupcakes think about movies adapted from popular novels? Well, while they enjoy the film (the male lead's buttercream is sooo dreamy), they tend to think the book was better. This piece was done for Illustration Friday's Adapt theme; for all of the awesome entries, visit illustrationfriday.com.

Sweet Art: Contagious for Illustration Friday

Cupcakes and Bacon with Cocktails
Food trends are a funny thing. From pesto to wrap sandwiches to tiramisu, sometimes a certain dish will capture people's fancy until it is just about beaten into the ground.

For this week's Illustration Friday theme of Contagious, I have chosen to illustrate two of the trendiest foods around: cupcakes and bacon. Sure, some foodie types will argue that they've jumped the shark, but these sweet (and salty) pleasures, which have captured the nation's (and, it seems, world's) attention, still seem to be spreading like wildfire, which leads one to believe that the fever for these foods is still contagious.

Sugar Mama: An Ode to the Sweetest Mom Ever

People frequently ask me what inspired me to start CakeSpy.com. What in the world could have contributed to such a deep interest (bordering on obsession) in cake that someone would devote their life to eating, researching, writing about, and illustrating it?

Well, as they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree--or in this case, the crumb doesn't fall far from the cake.
That is to say--blame it on my mom.
My mother, Margie Moore, is just about the coolest person there is. Growing up, for every birthday we had an amazing cake. None of this store-bought sheet cake business, no sir--we always had some sort of multi-tiered pink confection that put even wedding cakes to shame--like this one:

Cake from Above
Of course, making cakes like this was a time consuming ordeal, and very trying on the rest of the family as we were unable to indulge right away. So to stave off our sticky fingers, she'd always make a little something extra with the leftover cake batter: a batch of festively frosted cupcakes:

Cupcakes in a Row

...now, don't these look familiar? After all, they're the inspiration for a little cupcake character you've come to know and love.

Cup-bunny meets Cuppie

But wait--there's more. My mom is not merely a sugar enabler--she's also a renowned children's book illustrator. And yes--cake and sweets often play a role in her illustrative work, in books such as Ruby Bakes a Cake, A Horse's Tale: A Colonial Williamsburg Adventure, Bear of My Heart and many more.

Happy Mother's Day to the sweetest mom, like, ever.

Sweet Art: Impossibility for Illustration Friday

Impossibility
You may think that David Lebovitz's Perfect Scoop is a book of recipes, but you would be incorrect. You know what it is? Ice Cream Pornography. And it is this idea that inspired an ice cream red light district illustration for this week's Illustration Friday, where the theme is Impossibility. After all, how is it that a dessert that is so cold can inspire such heated desire? Naturellement, Monsieur Lebovitz's book makes a cameo in the piece.

Sweet Art: Fleeting for Illustration Friday

Cupcakes in love at Kerry Park
This week's theme for Illustration Friday is Fleeting, and this painting of Cuppies strolling alongside a sweet sunset against a city skyline seemed like an apt interpretation--a perfect reminder that while some things can be fleeting--say, a lovely sunset or the taste of cake--the sweet memories will remain.

This painting will also be available for sale at the upcoming CakeSpy art show at Trophy Cupcakes in Seattle--the opening date will be May 6! Mark your calendar!
