Cutting Edge: The Cricut Cake Debuts

Like, OMG! The Cricut Cake is now available!

...ok, I'll admit it, when I first heard about it, I wasn't exactly sure why I should be excited--but then again, I wasn't sure exactly what a Cricut was. However, thanks to the power of the internet, I found out that the Cricut actually started out as a scrapbooking tool--it is a kind of printer on which you can create customized die cuts and designs on command. Actually it's kind of cool--check out a video of how it works here.

So now you have an idea of why it's such a big deal that they've made a food-safe version of the machine: what an excellent tool for cake decorating!

Here's the 411 from the HSN press release:

The Cricut Cake is an easy-to-use personal electronic cutter designed to cut gum paste, fondant and other edible materials, while providing precise, professional-looking results every time.  Accompanied by the Cricut Cake Basics cartridge, featuring hundreds of images for cake decorating, the Cricut Cake is designed to work with pre-existing Cricut cartridges as well as Provo Craft's Gypsy and Cricut Design Studio software. The wide array of shapes, fonts and designs found on compatible cartridges makes the Cricut Cake perfect for all culinary decorating occasions, including birthdays, graduations, weddings and holidays.

The machine is similar in design to the existing Cricut cutting machine; however, specific modifications have been made; stainless steel dials, trim, cutting blade and roller, to make it safe for use with food. Additionally, the keypad features a full silicone cover to protect the screen and allow for easy clean-up.

Of course, this awesome doesn't come cheap--the Cricut cake (which comes with bundle including a 12x12 food safe mat, cartridge skirt, cleaning brush, blade cleaning basket, Cake Basics cartridge, the Elegant Cake cartridge as well as icing sheets) retails for a hefty $429.95. But can a price really be put on a beautiful cake? Well, apparently yes--but you know what I mean. If you're interested, you can be updated on the initial offering at HSN.

I had heard about this and I'm surprised, I thought it would be much more expensive. Not that I'll be getting it.

Not knowing the cricut I was surprised by the price - but I guess it is a pretty fancy machine! I don't think I will buy it but then again wouldn't turn it away if someone gave it to me! ha!

I have to admit I am a HUGE Cricut fan!

We actually used our Cricut to design The Best Seattle Themed cupcakes we displayed for the CupCakeCampSeattle event!

"The PNW Sustainable Granola" and we won!

Although I'd love to see the designs for the Cricut Cake accomplished in person before I'd swear by it.........Some designs are a little tricky.

I want I want I want... So Cool!! Would be fun to play with!!

After months of waiting, I'll be ordering my Cricut Cake from HSN ASAP. Provo Craft offers amazing Cricut cartridges and the ability to scale any image from 1/4" to 24". This machine will enable me to cut images that would require thousands of conventional fondant/gum paste cutters. Sure, there is an initial investment, but the Cricut Cake is going to be a game changer in the world of cake decorating.

You just blew my mind. Love this.

i heard about this the other day at my wilton techniques course. Its a great idea.. but I agree I was shocked by how much they are asking for it! hopefully it will come down in price!! :)

I've seen the Cricut cake in action at a retailers convention and although it is a very cool idea, it's not really for the every day consumer. The fondant has to be really thin to be used on the machine, a little too thin for someone at home to roll out before it dries out. You may even need a fondant sheeter machine (5K commercial retail price). ProvoCraft will be selling fondant and gumpaste sheets for consumers to use, but to me that could get costly and I don't know about the shelf life.

I see disaster written all over this machine---between the crisco you smear on it to hold the sheets down-and all the gum paste!!!! Can anyone spell JAMMED UP MACHINE???? No thanks! I dont want to be put on hold to get told I used something wrong ---and sugar is a great sticky substance.

i saw this on ultimate cake off and was really into it until i saw that it's cartridge-based. that seems extremely limiting. would love it if you could design your own patterns on the computer and then print them out. is that possible with this machine?

Thanks for the comments everyone! Based on the responses it seems to me like this machine is most appealing to either the professional-leaning amateur or a relatively small professional business--i.e., more production than the average kitchen but not like a commercial baking facility. It sounds to me like it is worth it for some businesses though--obviously Bella Bella for instance is making great use of it commercially! I'm intrigued by it but feel like I have some of the same hangups as others as an individual consumer--I'm not sure if I would be using it enough (or well enough!) to make it worthwhile. But oh how I'd love to play with someone else's cricut cake! :-)

What will they think of next!

April 15 | Unregistered CommenterSylvie

The cricut cake is unbelievable....I dont have one, wish I did but I have been a cake decorator and would love to have one but who can afford 4 or 5 hundred dollars especially when so many new cartridges just came out....I can hardly keep up with that, but the cake takes the cake hehe

i own this! it's one of the best investments i ever made.

April 16 | Unregistered CommenterHB

I just purchased one and I'm not impressed with it at all. Their frosting sheets taste horrible and they jamm up for me. When you try to take the sheet off the mat it sticks and won't come off. Either it's a really crappy machine or I am a crappy cricut tech. I'm thinking of taking it back, any suggestions?

I had a Cricut Cake...I sent it back. I make custom cakes professionally and my review was not very good.

I own a custom bakery and can't wait to use this. I just bought it at Michaels they matched with Walmart on line price of $290.

I use the cricut machine to make greeting cards so I am familiar with the machine. I would like to try the food version. I do not bake much but with the cricut machine It sound like it will be fun to use.
