Snack Attack: Salty and Sweet Super Bowl Brownies for Serious Eats
Super Bowl Sunday is one action-packed afternoon. There's so much going on: commercials, performances, deliciously salty snack foods, and I hear a rumor that sports are involved too.
But with all of this sensory overload, what sweet treat could possibly compete for your attention?
How about brownies so packed full of sweet and salty flavor they practically tackle your taste buds? Starting with a basic brownie recipe, I made these ones extreme by packing them chock-full of gooey caramel and dark chocolate, roasted peanuts, and salty pretzels. The sweet plays offense, pummeling your taste buds with a rich, chocolate-filled flavor, with salty bringing up the defense, with a crunch and savoriness from the peanuts and pretzels. Yes indeed, when sweet and salty team up, everyone wins.

Jessie, that illustration is great!! (The brownies look pretty wonderful too.)
Wow!!! These look out of this world! I LOVE LOVE LOVE of everything I see on the website. Keep up the great work. I wish you were close to me as I live way up north in New York. I will continue to enjoy all news from the site. CUPCAKES ARE FOREVER!
oh my god foodgasm
Did anyone actually try and make these?! They are horrible! I was so excited to try them, because salty and sweet are my fav combonations, but was very dissapointed in how they came out. For all the flavor that is packed in them, they don't taste like anytihng! All I taste is a dry cake and the flavor of roasted peanuts. Where was the rich chocolate brownie?! I love this website, but I'm sorry.....this one fell very flat. :( Boo.
Hi Roybin,
Sorry this one didn't work out for you. I wonder if a richer, fudgier brownie to start might be more your taste, more like the ones in the BAKED book? I'd love to hear more about your baking experience so that I could maybe improve this recipe.
I had the same problem as Robyn! The candy parts and pretzels were fine, but it was incredibly dry. Although, I don't see anything wrong with the recipe itself (no offense).
Maybe the baking time is too long?
Regardless, I want to help find a solution to this! They look sooooo yummy.
