ShamRock Shake, Rattle and Roll
Thursday, March 19, 2009
St. Patrick's day may be over, but the ultimate symbol of green excess is still available through the end of the month. No, we're not talking about green beer--we're talking about that green monster of a cold confection, the Shamrock Shake.
There's something delightfully trashy about this shake, which has clearly resonated with the public--there's even a movement to make it available year round. But somehow, as attracted as we are to this never-found-in-nature-green drink, we can't seem to make ourselves cross the threshold of those golden arches--must have seen Super Size Me one too many times.
Luckily, we've come up with a solution to make something just as satisfyingly unhealthy at home--and this recipe actually has shamrocks. So bad it's good, in a rot-your-teeth-out sort of way; plus, with St. Patrick's day baking supplies on sale, it's also an extremely cost-efficient treat.
Shamrock Shake
Ingredients:
- A massive handful of green shamrock sprinkles (no, you may not substitute non-shamrock shaped green sprinkles)
- 4 ounces or so milk (we used soymilk--yes, we see the incongruity in this)
- A healthy scoop of ice cream
- Small handful of ice cubes
Directions: Pour in blender; blend until smooth. Pour in your favorite glass that will allow the green to show through. Bask in the sugary green glory. Serves one.
* Optional note: Feel free to add Bailey's Irish Cream, Creme de Menthe or straight whiskey to taste.

Nice! You just made my husband love me again! Thanks.
creme du menthe makes it REALLY irish ;)
I'm totally with you on using soy milk. It just tastes better than milk straight from the carton.
Mmm I love the Shamrock Shake! And I love the idea of the addition of Bailey's Irish Cream.
I'm a shamrock shake junkie -- I make them as follows, though:
2 cups vanilla ice cream/soy ice cream (your choice)
1 1/4 cups lowfat milk or soymilk
1/4 teaspoon mint extract
2-4 drops green food coloring
blend it all up and enjoy it without the hassle or fat of mcdonalds.
Yum!
I might need all that "straight whiskey, to taste" to blot out the memory of actually eating a handful of sprinkles, hahaha...
Seriously, you rock for posting this recipe. I am trying out this weekend and definitely adding some whiskey! A perfect spring treat for sure.
You really crack me up!
MMMmmmmm! Such green goodness! ~kelly
well, at least shamrock sprinkles are only acceptable once a year--so why not indulge?
I would put in some mint chocolate chip ice cream! Deelish!
haha! i remember once as a kid my mom picked me up for lunch and took me to mcdonalds for a shamrock shake (i wanted to try one so bad!). unfortunately, i hated it and sulked about the whole thing. what a brat i was! i like that you are putting the shamrock sprinkles to good use :)
I have to get out and buy a shamrock shake soon! Thanks for the heads up about the deadline.
We don't get Shamrock Shakes at McD's out here in Australia...Am I missing out on something addictive?!? I guess I am, if it's popular enough for people to want it all year! :)
Thanks for posting, Jessie!
(Cuppie doesn't look too amused in the photo...I guess Cuppie doesn't like the idea of a green drink!) :)

Score one for the "green movement!" I'll take mine with a shot of Bailey's!
I love the look of it and would be lovely with some mint liquor. Which goes with the green theme. Cheers !!
heehee!
DANG! Yet another reason we love you Cakespy!
I'm right behind T.W. Bailey's Please. I love the addition of soy. It sounds so creamy:)
Kelly - I have to try that. The McDs around here did not have Shamrock Shakes and my husband was going crazy!
Good idea. Cutie shake for St. Paddy's Day. Haven't had a MCD shake in YEARS!!
Dang, woman, I wish I would have seen this earlier and I would have added it to my morning after hangover recipe post.
You haven't lived until you've had a Shamrock Shake with a chocolate shake poured down the center. Yes, they'll do that for you if you ask nice.
Whoah, whoah whoah. Hold up. Shamrock shakes are MINT flavored. Without creme de menthe this is merely a green shake. It's not optional- it's necessary! But I do agree with the shamrock-shaped sprinkles; it wouldn't be the same with plain green ones.
Sounds great. If only I had some shamrock sprinkles!
I loved this post but the first two comments had me in tears, ha ha :) Awesome idea!!
