What Annoys You at a Bakery?

Cupcake at the Bakery

I asked this important question on Twitter the other day: what annoys you at a bakery?

Personally, I have a few pet peeves. One is bad coffee. Why do excellent bakeries so often just drop the standard when it comes to coffee, offering stale or weak or otherwise terrible coffee? It seems to happen all too often. Another is apathetic service: employees who don't know what a baked good is, or how it's made, or what it's made with. It bums me out! Because I'm always so curious.

I was so fascinated by everyone's responses, though. Here are just a few of your pet peeves:

When the cupcakes and cakes look AMAZING but then taste just so-so. ( @iambakertweets)

When there aren't many savory items! Also, a lot of places stopped serving drip decaf & you have to pay for an Americano. ()

When they get a new baker and everything tastes different. And not in a good way. ()

Too much of the same item, in different flavors. ()

How about you? What annoys you at a bakery?

Pet peeves!

Bakeries where it's too difficult to find parking. Not often their fault, but it makes finding and buying their goodies vexing.

And also, bakeries who go nationwide and/or sell to a conglomerate, which necessitates changing their recipes substantially enough that they no longer taste anything like the originals. I'm looking at you King's Bakery of Honolulu!

I would agree with the not knowing of the ingredients/process. That's insane.

I really dislike it when the baked treat is cold...like straight from the fridge cold. If I'm paying $3.50 for a cupcake, then please bake it on the day I buy it!

When the baked good is dry because it's obviously been sitting in the case too long. A bakery should have a good system for dating their baked goods and removing any pastry that isn't fresh.

Haha this is late but when you find a delicious looking donut or something in the back and you ask for that one specifically and the employee gives you look. Or its from like three days ago...
