Love Letter to the Vanilla Kreme Donut at Dunkin' Donuts

Dear Vanilla Kreme Donut of Dunkin' Donuts,

You may have suspected this for some time, but I'd like to put it out there so it no longer tortures my soul from within:

I love you.

I love you, I love you, I love you. I have since the first time we met, on a serendipitous day in my third or fourth year, as a child growing up in suburban New Jersey. At that time, Dunkin' Donuts still allowed smoking, and was a popular hangout for recovering alcoholics, who could belly up to the donut bar at the location next to Foodtown on 18th Avenue, buy cigarettes at the vending machine conveniently located in the store, and drink unlimited coffee and eat donuts and talk about how long you'd all been sober and how deeply, extremely happy you all were.

I love how you're an elusive beast of a sweet treat: not every Dunkin' location has you. And even of the ones that do, not all versions are created equal. Some locations serve a version that looks like a jelly doughnut from the outside, but has a Kreme filling instead; some are served with a dollop of Kreme filling served on top, as a garnish; some have it coming out of the side, where the Kreme is piped in. Some versions have sprinkles. For the record, my ideal version is the one where the excess Kreme is piped out the side in a pretty pouf, with sprinkles.

I love how sometimes (oh, beautiful times!) when I purchase you, you are so full of Kreme filling that you weigh as much as a brick (the sweetest and best brick ever). Sometimes the Kreme filling is paltry, but I still love those times I have with you--just slightly less.

I love how your filling is called Kreme, not "Cream" or even "Creme". There is no illusion being made here that your filling is in any way healthy or good for me. And I appreciate that honesty.

I love how, when put in the freezer, the Kreme filling hardens into a sweet, hard (but not frozen) mass, and the experience of eating you, dear donut, can therefore be stretched out, sucking on the Kreme filling until it gently melts on my tongue.

I love how you make me a believer in yeast doughnuts, which are usually too airy and disappointing to me, but your Kreme filling adds the substantial aspect I seek in a sweet treat.

I love how you leave your mark upon me, leaving me looking like some sort of cocaine fiend after I've devoured you--and though you are a drug, the powder is far more benign, made of confectioners' sugar.

It is true: from time to time I have strayed. I have had a fling or two with Chocolate Kreme, but it cannot compare. There's just something about you, Vanilla Kreme, with that filling that tastes like the most wonderful donut filling adaptation of store bought birthday cake frosting, that I simply cannot quit.

And I never want to quit you, dear donut. Ours is a forever kind of love. And even though I live in Seattle, where we do not have Dunkin' Donuts, I promise to visit you whenever I return to Dunkin' Donuts country.

Love, CakeSpy

This completely convinced me that eating a donut is not only ok, but the very best thing anyone can ever do. I want!

I totally miss Dunkin Donuts! Can't wait to get my hands on one of their chocolate butternut (toasted coconut) donuts when I'm in NH in August. *swoon*

FROZEN! A frozen vanilla kreme donut! Now *there's* an idea.
That love letter resonated with my donut soul. I love that donut too. Beautiful stuff. DD should pay you for that ode.

OMG. Great, now I am craving these -- my FAVORITE donut ever. Wish I were pregnant right now because MAYBE just MAYBE I could convince Kevin to go out and get me one...but that would be a lot to ask because its not at all of the stores all of the time. MAN.

Three words.

Peanut Butter Kreme.
Love the donuts also and my friend is a Dunkin' Donuts coffee lover. She gets the coffee and I the donuts.

I just read this and now I'm wondering if the Dunkin Donuts down the street from my office has these darn things? I just adore reading your musings so! I think on the way to work tomorrow I'm going to have to make a special stop at Dunkin Donuts in your honor to see if they have this confection available here in Dallas!
Hahahahahaha this made my day :) I have written the same letter in my mind, devoted to the Chocolate Kreme. You are 100% right... the "Kreme" notation defines it as utterly devoid of nutrients, made entirely of sugar and fats and everything delicious and wonderful in the world. Oh goodness. So, so delicious.
Wow! I love the Vanilla Kreme Donut but live in California where we have no Dunkin' Donuts. :( I do try to pick one up whenever I travel to DD-land - but I'd never heard of FREEZING one! Oh my, that sounds fantastic with the kreme action. :) Thanks for the great idea!

I <3 these as well! I went the other day and strayed....my DD had made a doughnut whoopie pie-a chocolate cake doughnut sliced and filled with the beloved vanilla kreme...nope...not gonna do it! I need the original :)

Amazing. My sister Bethany (above) and I are such Vanilla Kreme donut addicts. So much so that I don't even mind the misspelling! Which usually bothers me! :)

I am so looking forward to my next VK donut adventure, so that I can try freezing it!!!

...could not have said it better myself.
We recently moved to San Angelo, TX where - alas - there is no Dunkin Donuts here, either! It was our morning coffee stop, our late night/date night stop, our Sat morning running errands stop. Whenever we travel the first thing I do is get on the internet and search for a Dunkin Donuts! My favorite is the Chocolate Cream Filled.

Dunkin Donuts has always been great to me, always stick with my old fashioned donuts, but I keep coming across stories of people who have had really bad experiences with them, there are some really funny vents about them here>.

An awesome friend of mine who used to work at a Dunks pilfered for me the Vanilla Kreme magnet they use for the label. It is now displayed above my desk at work. It's hard to describe the awesomeness that is this donut to people who are not from around here because these wonderful confections aren't in any of the shops near my office.

Quite simply, this may be my favorite ode ever!!! No other can compare to this delicious treat. Whenever I have strayed for the occasional Boston Kreme or glazed, I am always disappointed in my decision. I truly believe heaven is made of Vanilla Kreme.

These were my favorite donuts in college. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!!

I stumbled across your blog while looking for DD vanilla kreme nutritional info in a vain attempt to dissuade myself from making a donut run. These are my absolute favorite! Your love letter reminded me of weekly treks to the neighborhood DD that made these fresh around 3am. I'd show up with my sister and we'd beg the donut maker to put more vanilla kreme in our 1/2 dozen order. So delicious.

Your ode to the vanilla kreme donut made my heart smile. Once as a teenager my ever thrifty aunt gave my cousin and me a coupon for "buy one dozen Dunkin Donuts, get one dozen Dunkin Donuts free". We borrowed the car, went to the closest DD and I promptly ordered my dozen vanilla kreme donuts while my cousin wasted this fortuitous moment on some assorted dozen of "other" donut flavors. We went home, poured ourselves some milk, put in a movie, cozied up on a couch and then plunked our respective boxes down by our sides. In the course of the hour or so long movie (I have no memory of what movie it was, unimportant clearly) I managed to eat each and every one of those vanilla kreme filled donuts from heaven. A feat I still look back on with pride and envy as now, even thinking about them makes my wasteline bulge. It remains high on my list of happy memories. Now there isn't a Dunkin Donuts within 100 miles of me but whenever I am near one, come hell or high water, I stop for one and that happy memory of several years past comes rushing back with every bite.

I am a chocolate kreme lover, but the donut part itself is one of the main reasons I love it. It pairs so well with a creamy filling!

Not sure why DD does not just make the Chocolate Kreme and Vanilla Kreme donuts only. These are the only two worth the status of deliciousness.

And fats people are not bad for you. Animal fats (butter, lard, etc.) and all natural fats are perfectly healthy. Saturated fats are recognized by the body and needed for cell, tissue, and nerve repair. So don't believe the backwards agenda. Read up on how the so called healthy vegetable oils, and imitation fats are toxic and dangerous to everyone's health.

The information is available. It is up to you to educate yourself.

I have similar memories of this donut.

We had a Dunkin Donuts less than a block away and I remember when my mom decided I was old enough to take my money and go eat a donut on my own. I remember sidling up to the bar all excited and anxious someone would notice I didn't have an adult with me and send me home. I remember that might have been the best Vanilla Kreme donut I've ever eaten. Period.

I haven't lived near a Dunkin Donuts in over 15 years and now, alas, have celiac disease :(

But the memories of these donuts are some of my sweetest (pun intended) from my childhood. Thanks for the trip down memory lane :)

This.is.amazing. I just enjoyed one of these myself (care of a coworker) and you described my feelings perfectly. The only thing missing were sprinkles! :)
