Taiwanese Dream: Say Hello to the Pineapple Cake

First off, my apologies to all of you poor souls who don't have a person who regularly brings you sweets from Taiwan. Cos you're really missing out.

Luckily, I have the lovely and amazing Kairu, who drops by my store from time to time, often with sweet and exotic treats. She's the one who introduced me to nougat from Sugar and Spice, and now, my latest obsession, an unassuming little treat simply called Pineapple Cake.

As Kairu presented me with a couple of them, she said "the first ingredient is butter, so you know it's good".

How right you are, dear Kairu. These flaky, buttery little parcels contain a sweet surprise within: a sticky, sweet, and perfectly complementary pineapple filling. There's nothing complicated about these sweets--but that is part of their charm. Or, as Mr. Spy put it, "they're like a much better version of Fig Newtons".

Perhaps these sweet little morsels don't solely warrant a trip to Taiwan--but if you or a friend are headed that way, they're worth seeking out.

The ones we sampled were branded as being from Sunny Hills, but the website didn't seem to work. However, you can find a great roundup of information, as well as a recipe to make them at home, on Zester Daily.

You can buy pineapple cakes (台灣鳳梨酥) from Uwajimaya - they are in the boxed cake/cookie/snack aisle. Granted it's no real substitute for a visit to Taiwan ;), it'll satisfy the craving. Hmm, seems that I ought to make a trip to Uwaji myself..

Oh my goodness! I come from Taiwan, and there is so much more pastry there, you don't even know. Next time get your friend to bring the Sun Cake (太陽餅) from Taichung. It's a big, flat pastry that has a flaky, buttery outer crust and a filling made of sugar and chewy "maiya", which is something sweet that has its own flavour and texture. I guess its quality would be similar to molasses, but it has a special chewy texture. I guess it would be classified as a "gum" sort of substance? Anyway. It's DIVINE. Mmmmm. I miss Taiwan and its Pineapple Cakes :(

I work in an ESL program in Seattle, and sometimes these appear in our office, brought as gifts by students. I love these sweet little cakes! Nice texture and no sugar overload. I'm so glad to hear that Uwajimaya has them.

I LOOOOOOOVE pineapple cake!!!!!!!! I buy and eat the packaged ones from the Chinese supermarket in the US, but fresh pineapple cake from a roadside vendor in Taipei was a revelation.

Oh my gosh! We do not have many markets here in good old Oklahoma where I could get something similar to these but they look amazing! Pineapple is my favorite fruit! I might have to try the do it yourself recipe! YUM

cute, i totally grew up on these and variations of them, they are super accessible at any asian grocery market, and probably via amazon too :)

Lucky me! I have a co-worker originally from Taiwan & she has brought these back on a few occasions. Just love them!

I was originally from the same city where this special pineapple cake is from. And happened to visit the factory in my recent trip. This pineapple cake is different from what you can get from the Asian grocery store or even from the bakeries in Taiwan. The fresh ingredients make the difference. The butter is imported from New Zealand, flower is from Japan, egg is from the free range chicken and the pineapple used is locally grown. No preservative, so the cake is only good for2 weeks. It was on the TV and called as "Pineapple gold brick" I still have some and having it with tea every afternoon. Yum!
