Pastry Public Service: Preventing Dessert Desertion

Friends, I know that CakeSpy is generally sweet and upbeat in tone, a sweet retreat from the everyday grind. But today we're going to have to get serious for a few minutes.

I feel as if it is my duty to solemnly address a rising epidemic in the world of sweets: dessert desertion.

I have compiled a collection of images to illustrate and bring attention to this alarming trend and to raise awareness for the plight of the abandoned pastry. I warn you, the following imagery may be disturbing.

This Oreo, for instance: cut down in its prime. It could have been that much more of a snack, if only it had been given a chance.

Or this croissant. Poor little buttery baked good wasn't even given a chance to be a complete breakfast.

And this muffin. I know, I know. The top is the best part. But did you really have to decapitate and then discard this muffin and leave its maimed remains for all of us to see?

And this donut, discarded with just a bite left. Who does that?

...and words can't even describe the pain and anguish that this image evokes.

But no, this plight isn't just limited to baked goods: I have, with my own eyes, witnessed a mass candy disposal. They could have been headed to Candy Mountain, but instead, it was Candy Murder.

But what can you, as an individual, do to help? Here are some tips.

  • Eat quality sweets. This way, the desire to discard will be diminished.
  • Wrap it up! Don't toss it just yet. You might want it later.
  • Don't be a deserter! Offer it to a friend. A lot of people are happy to finish what you started, when it's in dessert form.
  • And if you must discard? Please, do it humanely and out of the sight of sensitive sweet tooths like yours truly.

Please, take action! Don't let another sweet treat go to waste. Only you can prevent dessert desertion!

This has been a public service message from CakeSpy.

LOL who does do that? Only the sick and twisted! You guys crack me up! I love it!

Love it! I especially feel for that maimed muffin. This post reminds me of a holiday message I wrote on behalf of donuts: Adopt a Donut — a message from your local bakery

That last image of a doughnut genocide is worriesome. I refuse to raise kids in a climate this hostile and degenerate. We msut turn the mindset around and quite calling doughnuts and baked goods as "junk" food, because that's how it will be treated. Elevate and educate!

This made me giggle.

10 second rule on those spilled doughnuts? :)

A few years ago, I stumbled upon this abandoned cupcake on a sidewalk in Ballard. I was instantly suspicious. Is this some kind of trick? Is someone watching from just around the corner, waiting for someone to eat the cupcake? We even checked for a string... To this day I don't know what it was doing there.

You are hilarious! I love the bit about wrapping it up for later. My family knows I always have a treat in my purse for later. Who knows when you'll need a treat? Who can predict these things? Better safe than sorry.

I work in a bakery and I offered a sample of a maple bacon bar donut to a customer so she could see if she liked it. She took one bite of it (a small bite at that) and set the rest on the counter. And then proceeded to buy two donuts. I was thinking: seriously there is one bite left and you wont even finish it, that is such a waste. So I was forced to dispose of it. :(

This is one of the most interesting posts I've ever seen. Thanks for the laughs. You've expressed your opinion in a funny way... and I agree with all of it. Quite truthfully, I don't see baked goods discarded in public very often, but when I do, it hurts. Muffin top stealers are the worst! No one ever wants muffin bottoms! I myself don't particularly LOVE muffin bottoms, so I'll break 'em up into chunky pieces and throw 'em into a bowl of cereal. I like the contrast of crunchy cereal with soft & soggy baked goodery. Mmm.

I truly get this post. As someone who reveres dessert I totally share the pain when I see dessert that's been haphazardly pushed to the wayside. The people who leave just one bite - for weight loss reasons - are the *worst* I think.

August 26 | Unregistered CommenterLori

This is painful. Doubly painful, because as a mother, I have had to explain to my children why we can't eat anonymous melted m&ms off the asphalt. Triply painful, because I am diabetic, so I choose my desserts very, very, carefully, and sadly, reverently pass on to a loved one any I can't finish for health reasons. There are never enough precious bites. :(
