That's right, friends--it's time for a totally sweet giveaway!
This time, it's a super-exciting one: three lucky winners are going to win a copy of the delightful new book by Warren Brown (you may know him as the kind-of-a-big-deal owner of the Mid-Atlantic sweet empire CakeLove), United Cakes of America: Recipes Celebrating Every State, in which you'll be treated to many, many delicious cake recipes inspired by different regions of the USA.
How do you get yourself in the running?
It's easy. Just share your favorite regional cake recipe! It can be from the state or region you're in currently, or perhaps the place you grew up, or maybe just a place that has special meaning for you. Be sure to specify the region and why it has special meaning for you! You can either link to the recipe, or simply copy and paste the entire recipe in the comment section.

I nominate my Aunt Betty's 1963 Lemon Cake, made with lemon cake mix, and a package of lemon jello mixed in...and a tart lemon glaze drizzled on top. 40+ years later, it's still amazing, and I take it to parties whenever I can.

I am in SW Washington and Apples say Washington to me , here is a an apple cake recipe , I make apple cake all the time , my whole family loves it!!
This is a fresh apple cake with walnuts and buttery brown sugar crumb topping.
Cook Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour, 15 minutesIngredients:
•3 cups all-purpose flour
•1 teaspoon baking soda
•1/4 teaspoon salt
•1 teaspoon cinnamon
•3 eggs
•2 cups sugar
•1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
•3 cups chopped apples, such as Rome Beauty
•1 cup chopped walnuts
•2 teaspoons vanilla
•Brown sugar topping, below
Preparation:
Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon; set aside. Beat eggs; add sugar and oil and beat for 3 minutes. Gradually stir in sifted dry ingredients. Fold in apples, walnuts, and vanilla. Pour batter into a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan and bake at 350° for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Pour topping over the cake as soon as it comes out of the oven. Let cool, loosen sides, invert on a plate, then invert on another plate, topping-side up.
Topping
•1 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
•1/4 cup milk
•1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
Combine topping ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a full boil and boil for 3 minutes. Pour over cake right out of the oven.
One of my favorite cake recipes is Pavlova. I've lived in Australia & New Zealand so I can avoid the whole debate of origin.

3 Egg Whites
3 TBS Cold Water
1 cup Castor Sugar
1 tsp Vinegar
1 tsp Vanilla Essence
3 tsp Cornflour
Beat egg whites until stiff, add cold water and beat again. Add castor sugar very gradually while still beating. Slow beater and add vinegar, vanilla and cornflour. Place on greased paper on greased tray and bake at 150C (350F) for 45 minutes, then leave to cool in the oven.

I live and bake in Austin, TX and my new favorite treat has got to be Texas Sheet Cake. It's a rich chocolate cake made in a jelly roll pan, and frosted with an even richer chocolate icing while still warm. Made with butter, sour cream, cocoa powder, and melted chocolate chips. It looks more like an iced brownie than a sheet cake -- one look on the internet shows ongoing debate about the cake's origins/name -- but one thing is certain: the chocolatey taste is as big as Texas!

Shoofly pie ( Attributed to Pennsylvania Dutch)
Pastry for a 1-crust 9-inch pie
1 cup all-purpose flour
Two-thirds cup light brown sugar, packed
1 rounded tablespoon cold butter
One-fourth teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup light molasses
Three-fourths cup cold water
One-fourth cup hot water
1 teaspoon baking soda
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Roll out the pie pastry and line a 9-inch pie pan; set aside.
In a food processor bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, butter, and salt. Remove one-half cup of the mixture and set aside. Transfer the rest to a medium mixing bowl. In a small bowl, beat the egg lightly. Add the molasses and cold water, and blend but do not beat; you don’t want bubbles in the batter. Set aside.
In a small bowl, mix the hot water with the baking soda and blend into the molasses mixture. Add to the flour mixture and mix well. Pour into the pie shell and top with the reserved crumbs. Bake for 35 minutes. The pie will appear quivery but will firm up as it cools. Transfer to a rack to cool completely before cutting.
I'm from Mississippi, so Mississippi Mud Cake is a given. I also love buttermilk pound cake, but I'm not sure if that's really a regional thing or not..

As far as why I love my region/state so much, I just do! I was born and raised in the Southeast, and Mississippi is just a wonderful place to live. People from other parts of the country think that we are all just a bunch of overweight farmers, but that could not be farther from the truth. I love my state, and I'm proud to call myself a Mississippian!

I grew up in Philadelphia, and even though I don't know if Butter Cake is from our area, it was always a super-special treat for everyone I grew up with. Haven't had it in years, it must have at least 800 calories per serving!
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 large egg
1 envelope active dry yeast
1/2 cup warm milk
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon vanilla
Butter Cake Topping, recipe follows
Prepare dough by mixing sugar with shortening and salt. Add egg and beat with mixer one minute until well blended. Dissolve yeast in warm milk. Add flour, then milk-yeast mixture and vanilla to dough batter. Mix three minutes with dough hook or by hand. Turn dough onto floured board; knead one minute. Place in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a towel and set in a warm place to rise for one hour or until doubled. Meanwhile, prepare topping; set aside.
Divide dough in two pieces. Roll or pat to fit two well-greased 8" square pans or one 9x13X2" pan. Crimp edges halfway up sides of pan to hold topping in. When dought is spread, prick dough with fork to prevent bubbling. Divide topping; spread over dough. Let cakes stand 20 minutes. Bake at 375°F for 30 minutes or until done. Do not overbake. Topping should be crusty, but gooey. Let cool before cutting.
Butter Cake Topping
1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter NO SUBSTITUTES
2/3 cup flour
2 cups EXTRA FINE sugar
2 extra large eggs
4 to 5 tablespoons milk
Cream butter. Stir together flour and sugar. Gradually beat sugar mixture in butter. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. By the teaspoonful, add just enough milk to bring mixture to a consistency for easy spreading over the cake, being careful not to make it too runny. Use as directed in recipe for Butter Cake.
I am originally from KY and one of the local bakeries used to make a Butter Kuchen cake that was so gooey and delicious. I have a copy-cat recipe, but I have not attempted it yet. If I win, I will make it in celebration.
