Cake Byte: Frosting Shots Article in the Seattle P-I!

We're feeling pretty famous today: Cakespy was featured in the Seattle P-I! Awesome food writer Rebekah Denn made sure to touch base with Head Spy Jessie for a quote and expert thoughts on the newest craze in the cupcake world, Frosting Shots. What's a frosting shot, you ask? According to the article,


Asking for a "frosting shot" is the latest bakery trend. Forget the "cake" part of cupcake – enough people are asking for a solo squiggle of frosting in a cup to make the shots an official menu item at some cupcake stores. The editor of Epicurious.com told The Associated Press it's "kind of the cut-to-the-chase evolution of cupcakes" and a great thing to have at an office party. Sure, I guess. If you're looking for more ways to cut costs at the office.

I'm not really sure what to make of a "frosting shot." I can see how it would appeal to those who love just the frosting, gluten-free customers, and kids. Personally, I wouldn't buy one. I like my frosting on cake and if I'm going to a bakery, I'm usually planning on indulging in something more than just a bit of frosting.

I'm not sold on frosting shots. Don't get me wrong...I LOVE frosting (or, icing as we call it north of the border!), but it's just...incomplete without cake...

you are so awesome! congrats!!

i personally think we need to go do frosting shots. and then maybe follow it up with some tequila... ;D

Interesting concept - I don't have a problem with frosting shots but I cannot imagine when I would want frosting sans cake.

as someone who wouldn't mind a package of oreo cream, or lucky charm marshmallows, the frosting shot idea is very tempting, although i'm not sure the certain to follow stomachache would be worth the moment of glory.

Frosting shot? In essence is that any different from licking the bowl? It's just that lazy people who don't bake have to pay for that privelege.

what a great idea! it's perfect for me, as i'm more a fan of the frosting than the cake.

Hmmm, I do love frosting but feel like I would miss the cake part. When I'm making cupcakes/cake at home I always do eat a little of the frosting alone, though.
Congrats on being so smart that you get into the paper!!

BTW, Jane, I know a place in Missourri where you can buy just the marshmallows from the cereal...

I've been doing frosting shots for at least 15 years. Back in the day before cupcake stores were around, I would head to Baskin 'n' Robbins and ask for a shot of frosting (no ice cream - just the frosting). It was delicious.

Glad to see you getting the local recognition you deserve ... =)

Mmm... nope. I don't like the idea of having a shot of butter and sugar... I mean, when I make cupcakes I always eat like half a cup of the frosting, but it's different, you know? I ain't going to do that in public... LOL

I've never heard of frosting shots, and my first reaction is one of repulsion. YOU CAN'T DENY CAKE. This is an important matter that needs to be addressed at length. I might need to blog about it.
